PhD position available in our lab to research at the interface of organic synthesis, catalysis and computations. To apply please get in touch with Franziska.
We are very happy and honored that our chemistry with NMe4SCF3 was selected for 2020 EROS Best Reagent Award. Many thanks to Aldrich® Chemistry, John Wiley & Sons, and the Award Committee.
Have a look at our new air-stable Pd(I) dimer
@angew_chem
. It triggers E-selective olefin migrations in air! It is also a great catalyst for site-selective C-C couplings in air. Congrats Gourab and Theresa!
Have a look how unsupervised machine learning with only 5 experimental data points along with in-silico data predicted phosphine ligands (including never made ones) that form air-stable Pd(I) dimers.

Pleased to report a synthetic access to the N-CF3 carbonyl motif in
@Nature
. Interestingly, the N-CF3 amides are more stable than conventional amides, while less conformationally restricted. 95 compounds made. Fantastic work Thomas & Sam!
With gratitude for the confidence placed in her and a heavy heart to leave

, Franziska is honored to serve the community as part of the editorial team

We report trialkylphosphine-derived Ni(I)-dimers & their application, guided by machine-learning. Such ligands are ineffective at displacing COD from Ni(COD)2, offering an alternative access to trialkylphosphine-bound Ni species. Have a look

We are looking for a new colleague. All career levels (starting junior academics or more advanced) are welcome to apply. Feel free to reach out for additional information.
Have a look at the triply selective and sequential diversification of a single Csp3 carbon carrying halogen, Bpin and GeEt3 for the modular construction of sp3-rich molecules.
@angew_chem
Congratulations Eric, Markus, Gurdeep, Quentin & Alba!
Happy to report a route to the uncharted chemical space of N-CF2H carbonyl compounds: efficient access to N‑difluoromethyl amides, (thio)carbamates, ureas, formamides & derivatives. Congrats Filip, Gina & Linhao!
@J_A_C_S
Happy to share an orthogonal C-O coupling of aryl germanes, which tolerates halides, silanes and boronic acid derivatives and proceeds at r.t. under air-tolerant and base-free conditions. Congratulations Amit and Avet.
Happy to share the straightforward and site-selective nitration of aryl germanes at room temperature. Congratulations to Amit, Avet and Aymane (aka the A-team)!
Have a look at our latest report, featuring remote arylation in less than 10 min reaction time at room temperature enabled by an air-stable Pd(I) dimer
@angew_chem
One transition state - two different products?! Check out this transmetalation study. A single TS leads to both, cis- and trans-Pd(II) complexes directly. Divergent mechanisms of trifluoromethylation were also uncovered.

Happy to share our latest developments to make N-CF3 hydrazines, N-CF3 indoles and their derivatives. All compounds are remarkably robust to acids, bases and further transformations. See

Happy to share our method to make N-CF3 formamides, just out
@angew_chem
. The N-CF3 formamides are highly robust, compatible with diverse chemical transformations & are conformationally more flexible than e.g. their N-Me analogues. Congrats Filip & Chris!
Franziska is delighted and looks forward to be the 2021 Streitwieser lecturer
@UCBerkeley
next year in honor of one of the most prominent physical organic chemists, Professor Andrew Streitwieser.
On 1st February 2020 our group had its 10 year anniversary. Past and present group members, representing over 20 different nationalities, (re)united for a few days of celebration in the Alps. Diversity has been key to our creativity, innovation and success over the years.
Marvin, Tanya and Franziska have been on tour in Canada this week to present lectures and posters at the 23rd ISFC in Quebec and OMCOS in Vancouver. Congratulations to Marvin for winning the OMCOS Rhodium poster award!

Happy to report the "Modular & Selective Arylation of Aryl Germanes (C-GeEt3) over C-Bpin, C-SiR3 and C-Halogens enabled by Light-Activated Gold-Catalysis"
@angew_chem
We are pleased to share the selective and sequential functionalization of C-Br vs. C-Cl vs. C-OSO2F (fluorosulfate). The site-selectivity is independent of any steric or electronic effects imposed by the substrate and fully predictable.
Although historically aryl germanes were of lower reactivity than other coupling partners, we could recently show their selective and orthogonal functionalizations, outcompeting many established coupling partners. For an overview, please see:
We very much enjoyed

Check out our latest
@angew_chem
: ArGeR3 are super robust and the least reactive in Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalysis, yet the most reactive groups with Pd nanoparticles, outcompeting established coupling partners. A molecular mechanism is provided too.
Many congratulations to our two new PhD graduates: Dr Theresa Sperger and Dr Thomas Scattolin! They are real stars in synthesis, catalysis & computations, having published 20 publications combined (so far).
It was a pleasure to participate in the 21st CSCB symposium in Dublin. Thank you Pat
@GuiryGroupUCD
for the great hospitality. Also enjoyed the surprise added day of sightseeing (caused by the snowy weather flight chaos).
Check out our latest findings: although ArGeEt3 are lousy coupling partners in Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalysis, they are highly reactive in gold-catalyzed couplings with ArH. Great work Christoph, Amit and Will!
Pleased to report the selective arylation and alkylation ortho to an adamantyl group. The oxidative addition to C-Br ortho to the adamantyl group was found to be as favored as to the corresponding adamantyl-free system due to attractive dispersion forces.
Check out our arylation of axially chiral phosphorothioate salts. While Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalysis was found to be ineffective due to a disfavored exchange at Pd(II) and high reductive elimination barrier, Pd(I) catalysis proceeds with favorable driving force.
