A truly heroic effort solves a long mystery! A hidden flaw in typical computational models leads to catastrophic predictions for carbonyl olefin metathesis! Find out why explicit solvent models are critical!
Honored to be part of this amazing list of scientists! Thank you to the National Science Foundation for nominating us and supporting our work!
@MichiganChem
@umichLSA
As there is the request for
@CarreiraGroup
members to weigh in, I will do so as a former PhD student starting in 2005. When joining, I was aware of the letter but quickly realized that the impression given did not reflect reality. (1)
A statement from Prof. Erick Carreira:
“I regret writing this letter, as it in no way reflects my leadership approach today. I have made peace with those impacted by the letter. (1/3)
Interested in joining an enthusiastic and ambitious research group

EWOC 2024 is in full swing - never have I ever seen more women chemists in one place! What an honor to share our research with this incredible audience
@Merck
@EWOC8
This unfortunately matches my own experience
@jenheemstra
! In the 7 years of my independent career every manuscript submitted to
@angew_chem
was rejected while related articles in our areas of research by other authors get published!
My article to
@angewchem
in 2014 about the gender imbalance of featured authors called 'Angewandte Chemie's Sexism' was rejected. Their reason, and I quote: "If we were to include more women then we would have to have a different set of selection criteria for men and women."
A general strategy for intramolecular Aza-Paternò–Büchi Reactions to access azetidines! We 💙4-membered heterocycles and don’t always break them! Congrats to Marc and Alistair!

Congratulations to Dominique and Stephen on their new publication in Organic Letters reporting the Intramolecular, Visible-Light-Mediated Aza Paternò-Büchi Reactions of Unactivated Alkenes
Simply removing this disturbing article in
@angew_chem
will unfortunately not solve the problem. These opinions will remain and many of us will be confronted with them on a daily basis. A journal has in principle a unique opportunity to combat these in the peer review process!
The article appears to have been taken down by
@angew_chem
(thankfully). However I had linked it in several emails to leaders
@BrockUniversity
,
@NSERC_CRSNG
and the journal. I only have the screen-shots I posted here now. Did anyone download a full copy & can send it to me?

Such sad news. He will be truly missed. I still remember the day of my PhD defense when he came to congratulate me and handed me an article about the importance of women in academia. It meant a lot having someone like Jack Dunitz think that I could become a successful academic!
With heartfelt sadness, the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry announces that our friend and colleague Prof. Jack Dunitz passed away peacefully on September 12, 2021, at the age of 98 after a short illness. He will be sorely missed.
Small pandemic appropriate celebration of a new grant! Thanks to all my students & Postdocs for their hard work, enthusiasm, and ambition! We will celebrate wildly when this is all over! 🎉
Socially distant fall group hike today with the Stephenson lab
@crjsteph
including cider and donuts! Nothing compared to our 4th of July BBQ and tailgate that we had to give up this year - but definitely good to get outside and socialize!
Fingers crossed 🤞 for a chemistry Nobel prize for mRNA vaccines tomorrow! Together with the physics Nobel prize for climate change models this would be exactly the joint scientific statement that 2021 needs!
It’s a true honor to receive the 2019 Society for Synthetic Organic Chemistry Japan lectureship award this year! Thank you for a fantastic conference and an amazing visit to Gifu!
Congratulations Dr. Becker
@Marc_R_Becker
for a fantastic thesis defense today! Glad you are staying with us for a few more weeks. Good Luck 🍀 at Merck!
The actually really concerning fact is that what is going on behind closed doors - in grant and manuscript review - is likely so much worse. Especially if people at this level have no issues voicing opinions of this type in a prestigious public setting.
Congratulations to Dr. Katie Rykaczewski for a fantastic thesis defense!
@Merck
has certainly made the right decision! Good Luck in your new position! You will be missed!
No idea what I would do without my students & Postdocs. It has been a privilege working with you all for the past 5 years and I enjoyed every minute of it!

The metathesis community will greatly miss him. As a young group working in this area we have benefited immensely from his support and interest in “other types” of metathesis that do not just involve alkenes. I will be forever grateful.
The Division is saddened to report the passing of Robert Grubbs. The outpouring of memories being shared is a testament to his profound impact and influence as a professor, mentor, colleague & friend -- not only in the chemistry community, but beyond.
He will be greatly missed.
Congratulations to team Cochlearol B for a beautiful approach featuring Catellani and (2+2)-cycloaddition reactions! Great way to start the new year, Alistair, Trenton, Emily, and Kason!

I had spoken out about my lab’s experience back then and often get asked. We had our first

Great paper. However TBH I have not forgotten the fiasco at
@angew_chem
over the Hudlicky article and the backlash that I faced for resigning. Good to see these articles but I wonder how many young women publish there. Has the situation improved? what has the journal done? IDK.

First task before getting back to our grant submission this morning: Helped a giant turtle cross the street in front of our house. She did arrive safely but was reasonably unhappy with me!
A big thank you to Eli Lilly for a 2019 Eli Lilly Grantee Award! Thank you to my research group for their hard work and to Lilly for supporting young academic labs! We are beyond excited!
