As a British journalist who has actually lived in Sweden for 14 years, I'm getting fed up with people like
@Nigel_Farage
spreading lies about this country to advance their racist agendas.
Swedes have a very funny attitude to their flag. They are utterly obsessed with it: flagpoles everywhere, flags on birthday cakes and Christmas trees, blue and yellow all over the place. But sure, feel free to burn it, we don’t care.
In Sweden we vote on Sundays and can also vote more than two weeks in advance at supermarkets, libraries and other public spaces. Turnout in 2022: 84%.
Suddenly card machines in Swedish bars and restaurants are trying to force us to leave tips. This is not OK. We are not the US. There are collective wage agreements here and the price of food and drink reflects this. Stop.
Here the Finnish Europe minister buttons up his cuffs to symbolize the reunification of Sweden and Finland in NATO. When Sweden lost Finland to Russia, Finnish officers vowed to leave their cuffs unbuttoned until the countries were reunited. 🇸🇪🇫🇮
Johnson’s refusal to submit to the BBC’s top political interviewer and to skip the debates is not normal behaviour in a democracy.
Senior Swedish politicians I spoke to were astonished he could get away with it.
Sweden is breaking a long-standing policy of not sending arms to countries engaged in military conflict. First time this kind of support has been offered since Sweden supported Finland against the Soviets in 1939, days PM.
This is the head of the Swedish fencing federation trying to stand up for the rights of women and LGBTQ people at the sport’s world congress in Lausanne. People from anti-democratic countries try to silence him, but he won’t stand down. Respect.
#systembolaget
inte uppfyller sitt uppdrag nu. Otroligt att svenskarna finner sig i detta!
Why are Farage et al so desperate to demolish Sweden's reputation? Easy, because if open, liberal Sweden is successful it utterly discredits his brand of closed, suspicious nationalism.
If you want your country to adopt Sweden’s corona strategy, don’t forget the sick pay of 804 kronor (€78/£71) *per day*. If you want sick people to stay home, make it affordable.
I’m pretty shocked the New York Times published that poorly-researched article about Sweden’s coronavirus strategy.
@emanuelkarlsten
demonstrates just how bad it is.
People who the UK will let in without quarantining:
1) Italians who want to watch football.
2) Brits returning from a fortnight in Shagaluf.
People the UK refuses to admit w/o quarantine:
1) Fully vaccinated Brits living in the EU who haven’t seen their families for a year.
Disinformation about Sweden is an epidemic - spread by Russia, Breitbart, Farage and others. A few of the most common lies are listed at the end of this article:
The fact is that Sweden is an extraordinarily successful, peaceful, safe country and a fantastic place to live. I can say that because I, y'know, live here.
Men,
@danielswedin
@TheLocalSweden

Incredible that it’s possible in Sweden for someone to make over a billion kronor (more than €100 million) purely from running taxpayer-funded schools.
Farage is exploiting the fact that Brits and Americans know nothing about Sweden to paint a false picture, for his own selfish political ends. This is deeply immoral and Sweden doesn't deserve it.
I mean, I guess Finns, like Swedes, are advised by the authorities to always be prepared for emergencies. In Sweden we’re told to always have some tinned food and water containers at home.
Lots of Brits on Twitter seem to think the Swiss referendum was just a reaction to Brexit. But maybe it’s just possible that Switzerland has a political life of its own? Not everything revolves around Britain, y’know.
There is one benefit of a wetter-than-usual summer: it's great for mushrooms! Richard Orange discovers five things you need to know about how to mushroom-hunt like a Swede.
Sweden is about to double the salary needed to get a work permit. What many people don't realise is that this will affect thousands of people *already* in Sweden, working and paying taxes. /1
Boris Johnson to sign defence deal in Sweden on Wednesday. Royal Navy ships to be dispatched to Baltic to protect Sweden and Finland during Nato accession process.
Sweden’s PM forced to make statement after his coalition partner Jimmie Åkesson calls for mosques to be torn down. (Though he fails to actually mention Åkesson or the Sweden Democrats by name).
Those who make antisemitic statements or agitate against Muslims insult people in our own country and damage Sweden and Swedish interests internationally. What we need now is to come together - not further polarisation. 3/3
Yes, it bit off more than it could chew during the migration crisis. Yes, integrating refugees is hard here too. And yes, even Sweden has rough neighbourhoods, but no rougher than similar places anywhere else. Again, I know because I live here.
Swedish political debates are insanely detailed, differences are wafer-thin, and they last two whole hours. Exhausting and a little bit boring, and thank God for that.
Seriously, I might be minded to give a small consideration for decent table service, but who in their right mind gives a tip for a bartender to pour a glass of sauvignon blanc?
Before the 2016 Brexit referendum two Swedish parliamentary parties wanted to quit the EU. That number is now down to zero.
The state of Britain is the best possible advert for EU membership.
Let's just have a look at what some international studies say about Sweden: 1) The world's best country for immigrants (that's people working in startups/academia/finance as well as refugees)
No, no, no. He said there was a special place in hell for those who promoted Brexit *without a plan for implementing it.*
This tweet distorts what he said.
Delete, delete, delete.
So this is it. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is on his way to Washington, where it’s expected that Sweden will finally join NATO.
Sweden has stood outside military alliances for two centuries. All that will be history. A huge moment. All thanks to Putin.
@jessbrammar
I feel desperately for many young people living alone in London, dying to spend Christmas with family. It’s easy for smug marrieds to judge.
I could keep going, but I think the best thing for
@Nigel_Farage
would be to have a good read of some articles that reflect the real Sweden. If he wants to talk to someone who lives here, call me.
@AdamBienkov
@isslater
It’s a good idea. Instead of rehashing old arguments it might give us an insight into how people who voted for it think Brexit is going (not well, if polls are right).
Sweden’s NATO bid is currently at a sensitive stage in the Turkish parliamentary process. And Jimmie Åkesson chooses this moment to propose demolishing mosques?
David Beckham flew out to see Sven -Göran Eriksson, who has terminal cancer. Sent his chef out the day before to make a slap-up meal of herrings and elk. Brought eight bottles of wine connected to important dates in Sven’s career. What a nice guy.
If you live abroad, these are particularly trying times. Borders shutting, no idea when they’ll open again and you’ll be able to see family. Very difficult. Look after each other. And remember: this too will pass.
President
@vonderleyen
visited Bucha today. “It is horrible. There are almost no words that can explain what I saw.”
“There were still the bodies. Atrocious. Unbelievable. Shocking. This is the brutal face of Putin’s war… He has to fail. He has to fail and Ukraine has to win.”
@emanuelkarlsten
Honestly, I’m shocked but not surprised. This is what happens when foreign coverage is provided by journalists with no background in the country in question, no knowledge of the language and no opportunity to visit.
Yes, yes, I’ve figured out how to get round it. But it’s annoying to be presented with this by an establishment already charging handsomely for its services.
Swedish PM Magdalena Andersson tonight: “I don’t rule out Nato membership in any way.” No hint of principled resistance to joining the alliance. Big changes may be afoot here.
The incapacity of Sweden’s authorities to stem the tide of shootings in our cities is incredibly worrying. A fifteen year old boy was the latest victim. Fifteen.
