As a new cyclist one of my favourite things is how easy it is to interact with people when you’re cycling. I can chat with other cyclists at traffic lights. I can say “you’re welcome, enjoy your day” when pedestrians thank me for stopping at a crossing. It’s so social.

Dropped kerbs have an activist history. Before they were commonplace, a US disability rights activist group called the Rolling Quads used sledgehammers to bust kerbs and build ramps in the dark of night -- forcing their city into action. RT if you agree drop kerbs are badass.

Vauban is a town in Germany where anyone can drive if they want to. But the speed limit on their streets is 5mph. And on street parking is illegal. If you want to own a car, you have to purchase a private storage space in the carpark on the outskirts of town. I love Vauban.

I did my first commute since my bike got stolen yesterday and it absolutely sucked. What should have been a 25 minute journey took 1.5 hours. That never happens on a bike. Predictable journey times are such an underappreciated part of active travel.

Instead of car free cities maybe we need to talk about freeing people from cars. Petrol is a burden. Sitting in traffic is a burden. Finding somewhere to park is a burden. Hating your journey is a burden. Being freed from the need to do that feels bloody nice.

Is your cycle lane good? A tool for planners: Could an 8 year old or an 80 year old use it safely? Can a cargo bike, trike or hand cycle fit in it comfortably? Does it connect useful and interesting places? If you answered no to any of the above, your cycle lane is not good.
