Last year, I learned I potentially needed a risky operation to remove a cranial tumor.
In this essay for
@REI
, I wrote about how biking helped me come to terms with the surgery and process the other hard parts of living with a rare chronic disease.
Calling all writers who like camping, backpacking and the gear you need to do those things. I'm the camp and backpack editor at
@REI
and am open to pitches or even just a friendly hello from interested writers. Sound like you? Feel free to drop me a line at sgrothj

Regarding my last Tweet (are they even still called that?): Thanks for all your emails. Due to the overwhelming response, I may not be able to get back to everyone. But I appreciate the outreach and look forward to reading through your pitches/notes over the next couple weeks.
Scheduled my appointment to receive my COVID booster (I received J&J earlier this year). I don't know whether this feeling will ever wear off, but I am extremely grateful each time I get one of these shots. Thank you, science. 💉
From the adventure archives: my beautiful backpacking trip this past weekend. Grateful for the eagle nesting that necessitated a rerouting, because I discovered some beautiful stuff.
Late to the share, but
@REI
created a pretty cool catalog this year (complete with an editorial touch). If you have last-minute shopping or enjoy reading fun stories, give it a look: .
A few people I enjoy following lately:

🧠
@dremilyanhalt
for emotional wellness tips.
🗣️ Who else out there is encouraging a productive conversation?
This photo from my mom of my 11-year-old pouty face perfectly summarizes my mood today, two days post throwing out my back whilst wakeboarding. Stubborn back injury be damned.
And as much as I advocate for better working conditions for journalists, I wouldn't trade my early experience for anything. I wrote stories I'm still really proud of, and I'm happy my early 20s were shaped by a desire to serve and to learn.
Beautiful day for snowshoeing at Mount Bachelor. ❄🌲Grateful to live in such a beautiful part of the country. Bonus: This trail offered views of some mountains I plan to climb in the very near future. 👌
My brother does a lot of cool stuff for
@nytimes
and only very occasionally self promotes it. Here's a rare moment when I can brag about it via a retweet. Go check out his stuff!
Why sprint up stairs when you can sprint up a volcano? Just keeping it weird over here in

Sometimes I finish something that I forgot to put on my to do list, and so I write it on my to do list and immediately cross it out. Am I the only one who does this?
Still needs a bit of tweaking (and I need to flesh out my portfolio), but I can happily say I crossed my first goal of 2019 off my list—a revamped website. 🎉
As Portland's resident expert on

I'm not great at being emotional on Twitter, but suffice it to say this is a very special essay to me. It's not a story I ever thought I'd share, but writing about this part of my life helped me process things in much the same way biking did. Thanks for checking it out.

Something few know about me: I live with a rare disease called
#FibrousDysplasia
. I was diagnosed when I was 8 and had a craniotomy that same year to "treat" it. Unfortunately, there's no cure. (... continued)
I thought long and hard about this on my walk home today. Major major props to
@RyanGClark
for speaking his support out loud and with such candor. But also ... THIS SHOULD BE THE NORM!!!
I have literally been thinking about this all evening and how Ryan is one of the few men I personally know who has posted something in this vein. We need those who cannot become pregnant in this fight too!!
Just finished edits on a new restaurant writeup — Wholism in Southeast

For a moment just now, amid the chaos, I lost myself appreciating the golden rays pouring through my window. It's a moment I yearned for two months ago when I was grumbling about winter days, thinking *they* were a problem. If nothing else, this situation invites new perspective.
