Best news ever. Cancer downgraded to a 2, no chemotherapy. No further treatment needed. Thanks to my wonderful bowel cancer team. Hurrah! Tears of joy from all the family. 😄😄🥰🥰
I retired early from teaching last year at 60 after 30 years in teaching. This is my second September of not being hyper anxious about going back to school. I feel fabulous 😀
As an English teacher for the last 30 years, I can tell you the GCSE Literature is putting kids off, it’s focused on memorising quotes, rather than thinking. They think the A level is more of the same tedium. So sad.
English was the most popular A-Level twenty years ago. Now it’s not in the top 10. I’m biased, but I do think it’s a shame, and perhaps indicative of a shift towards education becoming less about ideas and more about employability. Getting a good STEM job can’t be everything.
Darling daughter received her unconditional offer from Edinburgh University yesterday! To study English Literature and Classics. She took her A levels last year. We have been waiting so long to find out- six months. She’s delighted. Hurrah! 🎉🍾🥂🎊😀
@1an_Higgins
On a school trip to Barcelona, I slept in the coach outside the Sagrahada Familia. I’d been clubbing all night. I was the teacher. Missed the church, I hear it’s good.
@implausibleblog
Unbelievable rubbish. The people under most stress where the NHS and they behaved impeccably and saved lives despite the enormous stress. 🤬
If you are a teacher and you’ve had enough & near retirement age, phone and talk to the Teachers Pension ppl, don’t just rely on looking at the website. Pensions are complex & confusing. I discovered I could retire earlier than anticipated. Joy.
Back in school tomorrow after 6 months out with cancer. Feeling somewhat apprehensive going back to teach approx 200 teenagers. 😳My last park walk celebrated with this stunning tree.
I’ve been off sick with heart failure and I’m feeling a bit fed up. Son is having a tricky time at Uni, it’s all very lonely for him, now I’m all anxious. Sometimes life is just too much worry. 😕
Back in school for the first time in a year - I had cancer last year. I really don’t know if I can still do this. I’ve only been an English teacher for 29 years.
Dom’s best friend has made a little memorial in our nearby park. I brought yellow flowers for Brazil and the sunshine he brought into my life.

I’m studying Classical Civilisations A level. The whole Hamartia as a ‘ tragic flaw’ is wrong. It means mistake. This is direct from Aristotle.
Tomorrow will be my 30th year in teaching. I’ve no idea how I have survived this long. I feel dread about facing tomorrow, but I know I’ll get through it. I always do. Once more unto the breach…
Well, for the first time in 10 yrs no new term tomorrow. Still recovering from cancer. Dr says I need to take it easy. Good luck to all the teachers out there, please look after yourselves. 😘
Just had an operation to remove a bowel cancer, all went really well. 7 hours of surgery to keep it keyhole. The NHS are amazing! Thank you.

Sitting in the rain, in the garden, listening to the wonderful

play on the Downs nearby. I miss the 90s. Love Bristol. Miss Dom.

My school was once inspected by a head from a private school, mine was a comprehensive. He also stopped a lesson, told the teacher he was doing it incorrectly and told him what he should be doing. A complaint was made & he was replaced.
@lewis_goodall
Son accepted by
@UniOfYork
on predicted grades and given an unconditional offer on 11/8. Algorithm dropped him a grade in 2 A levels. Feel so lucky & very grateful to York.
Broke my wrist on holiday in Turkey. I slipped and fell walking to the beach. My sandles had no grip. Should have worn trainers. All well now, lesson learned. The holiday was fabulous, as was the NHS. A&E was empty, Dr said it’s always empty when the sun shines.
I’m going into hospital tomorrow for an operation, the first thing I have organised is downloading episodes of
@TheRestHistory
to listen as I recover. I love it. 👍

I’ve just retired at 60 after 30 years of being a teacher of English. It was mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting & I had serious health repercussions caused by my job. SLT ignore your experience. Joyfully retired before teaching killed me.

@bowelcanceruk
Me and my BFF have just ordered one of these each to wear on our summer holiday to Italy. We plan to wear them and toast Dame Debs in Prosecco 🥂🥂🍾🍾
I have been seen by the Sleep clinic, due to medical reasons. I have mild sleep apnea, I’m given an air mask to wear at night & I go into deep sleep for the first time in 20 years! Omg! A revelation! How on Earth have I survived this long!

and I were a couple in the 1990s. He was a lovely man, clever, funny, intelligent a joy to be with. I was broken-hearted when we split up. He has lead an extraordinary life & I was lucky to be a part of that . I loved him then & I love him now .
So after my retirement jaunt over Italy last month, I’m now tidying and cleaning the entire house! Cupboard by cupboard. Endless excitement. 30 years of ignoring the housework cos of being a teacher . Living my best life. 😊
Chatting to other teacher friends at different schools- no parity with this yrs exams. Some are doing only 1 question on paper 2, some are being shown the papers beforehand, some are missing out Q3 on Language paper 1. Total chaos. ☹️
@StuartLock
I’ve taught for 30 years, I’m retired now at 60. I thought I was teacher tired, I wasn’t, it was bowel cancer that was exhausting me. That was 2020. After treatment all is well. Beware thinking everything is teacher tired.
@MichaelRosenYes
is a national treasure. I had an A level student that wrote to him & a well known Language academic asking advice. The academic’s reply ‘ read my books’, MR’s reply was A detailed 2 page personal letter. An inspirational, kind man.
Italian holiday update: My Heart nurse has recommended that I do not travel abroad on my own 😞My husband & friends have also advised me to do it next year, when I’m more healthy. I’ve booked 3 days camping in the Gower instead & will save Italy for next year.
@WelshGasDoc
I once delivered an excellent report at parents evening to Hannah & her mum. The girl then said, ‘ I’m not good Hannah, I’m had Hannah, you have mixed us up’. I then had to back pedal & take it all back. 😳
@HodgkinsonJohn
@HelenNurton
Well said John, I’m retiring after 30 years. It’s an intense, exhausting, demanding and highly responsible job. I’ve spent so much of my own money to support my career. Behaviour in classes can be heart stoppingly stressful.
@AnnOlivarius
@hermesSE10
My mum. A single parent ( widowed) who was a full time teacher of the deaf & raised 3 kids alone while full of grief. She was funny, clever and a joy to be with. She never gave up, she fought hard . She was everything to me.
Finally having my cancer exit procedure on Sunday, 18 months later than it should have been. I trust all will be well. I’m self isolating until then with DR Cat
@StigAbell
My son & my daughter took A level English, loved it and did very well. My DD got her results today & is going on to do a degree in English & Classics. I’m so proud of them both
Back from the consultant gynaecologist, great news. Fibroids shrinking. No more need for MRIs every 3 months, meds reduced from 6 a day to 1 a day. Hurrah! Let’s hope tomorrow’s pre op day is as optimistic. 😀
My lovely Louis got his place at York university to do Politics and International Relations. Thank goodness, so happy. Thank you to all his fabulous teachers at
@ChoirBristol

I totally agree, in 58 but even the 30 year olds struggle. I had cancer for 5 years and didn’t realise as I took the extreme tiredness for granted as teacher tiredness. All OK on the cancer front now.
