To develop soft materials that emulate behaviors of living organisms, we designed hydrogels that swim autonomously toward a light source. This intelligent phototactic behavior is controlled by supramolecular nanofibers linked to photoresponsive networks.

Cartilage regeneration that enables pain-free movement is critical for healthy aging. This new paper shows that highly dynamic glycopeptide supramolecular polymers that mimic chondroitin sulfate can boost bioactivity of the cells that make cartilage.

Excited to share our paper published online yesterday in @Nature. We developed a supramolecular material in which short peptides program only 6 structural units of poly(vinylidene fluoride) to recreate and outdo ferroelectricity parameters of the polymer.

In another recent work, we used systems that integrate covalent and supramolecular polymers (hybrid bonding polymers) to develop robotic materials for rapid photo-actuation and spontaneous tracking of external light.

Excited to share this @PNASNews paper on the regeneration of articular cartilage in the knee joints of sheep. This translational work could be a future treatment for osteoarthritis and was a collaboration with colleagues at @UWMadison and @SPRIVail.

In a recent @J_A_C_S paper, my lab demonstrated for the second time that supramolecular motion is a key factor in biological signaling. The phenomenon has now been observed in cartilage cells and was initially discovered in the spinal cord.

This translational work has potential to circumvent the serious side effects associated with recombinant BMP-2 and could expand to other applications for bone regeneration, such as correcting scoliosis or repairing challenging bone fractures.
