I talk about this all the time.
Folks really believe there’s a social safety net in place for homelessness.
Last week I called every shelter in the city for a bed for a dv victim running from her abuser. There were none. There are almost always none.
People vehemently believe that there are resources for people in poverty that are available and reliable. This is a huge part of the problem.

This is part of the reason the optics of homelessness enrage those who carry internal shame about poverty. They assume help is there and folks aren’t using it.
I’m here to tell you that help is not there, at least not reliably or to the scale that we need.

Folks don’t know what services are not available until they try to navigate these systems themselves. By then, it’s too late because they’re already stigmatized with whatever label society has applied to their situation (“homeless”, “disabled”, etc)

As a formerly unhoused person one thing I learned is that people do not recognize your humanity when you don’t have a house—and that’s a really isolating experience.

With the closing of Shuman Center in 2021, juveniles are now being housed in the Allegheny County Jail. Children do not belong in adult jails. As your county councilor I will work with community groups and the rest of council to find alternatives to jail for our youth.

Researchers gave homeless people $750 per month for a year, no questions asked. The recipients spent the money on food, housing, transportation, clothing, and health care. And after six months, only 12% of those who received funds were still homeless.
