NEW: The city of Toronto is officially taking legal action against carpenter Khaleel Seivwright, who's been building tiny shelters for encampment residents.
Some exciting ✨ personal news ✨! I’m the Globe and Mail’s new (and first ever?!) online culture reporter. In this brand new beat, I’ll report on our quickly evolving online landscape and its effects on society, politics, work, identities, relationships, and so much more.
The city also says that before any shelters or tents are removed from parks, residents are "engaged" and provided with other housing options. But from conversations I've had with
@ESN_TO
, occupied tents are still being cleared with residents' belongings inside
@jkac
Thank you for introducing me to home inspector TikTok. I just saw one where he’s on a roof touching loose nails and has so much disappointment in his voice
On Feb 12, the city applied for a court injunction to stop him from Seivwright from "building unsafe wooden structures and depositing and illegally depositing them on City property." Here's the application:
The city's news release re: the injunction application mentions the Feb. 17 fire in a wooden shelter that killed one encampment resident. The city filed the app the previous week.
I've got some personal news: I've officially joined the Globe and Mail as an audience growth content editor! I'm super excited to be a part of this incredible team.
In my first feature for
@esquire
, I profiled Michelle Zauner (aka
@Jbrekkie
). We chatted about microdosing + hiking, Karen O, her fantastic new album Jubilee, and the complicated nature of trying to prove yourself to someone who no longer exists
I wrote an explainer for the

breaking down what's going on with the trucker convoy driving across Canada to protest vaccine mandates for truckers.
Toronto Public Health has named the three restaurants ordered to shut down for not "taking the necessary steps to sufficiently protect both the public and employees from the spread of COVID-19". They are:
- MARBL (455 King W)
- King Taps (100 King W)
- Casa Mezcal (291 King W)
I don’t think any provincial leaders in Ontario even visited encampment sites here in Toronto, let alone spoke out against the police when residents were being evicted
NDP leader
@GaryBurrill
is here speaking against the shelters’ removal. “… you’d think they’d have the sense and enough class not to send a heavily armed police presence to evict them”
Ahem! I've got some ~personal news~ to share: After nearly three years as a staff reporter, tomorrow will be my last day at
@nowtoronto
. I'm sad to be leaving and will miss my brilliant coworkers, but I'm also feeling super excited to get started on some new projects.
For
@torontolife
, I spoke with ICU nurse
@birgitomo
about working in the third wave, getting Covid and having to self-isolate without paid sick days, and why she predicts a mass exodus of nurses after the pandemic is over.
lolololol love to pitch a personal essay and be told by editors that the story would be better suited as a reader submission (so, not paid!) and then see that same section run a VERY SIMILAR STORY but by a middle-aged white guy freelancer.
Staff have been found to be working while sick or pressured to work while ill. Infected people with COVID-19 worked at more than one of these businesses.
Ontario has imposed a moratorium on new eviction orders, following similar moratoriums in New York and San Francisco. No word yet on how long it’ll be for. I’ll have a story up tomorrow at
@nowtoronto
The Ontario legislature had a moment of silence for Emily Victoria Viegas, the 13 year old girl who died from COVID, and then a few moments later the Conservatives voted against paid sick leave. This is appalling.
Some news!

I'm working on a story about the overpolicing of sex workers in Toronto/GTA and I'm looking to interview SWs about their experiences with police, bylaw officers, CBSA, & about working conditions more generally. Sources can be anonymous. Pls RT and share with your networks. Ty!
In some much needed good news: during their first ever virtual meeting, tonight city council approved a new modular housing project for Toronto's homeless population
My worst habit as an interviewer is writing a concise, well-thought out question in advance, but then winging it during the actual interview and the question coming out as rambling and convoluted
New from the renaming Toronto institutions file: a city of Toronto staff report recommends renaming Dundas Street, which is named after Henry Dundas, the Scotsman who delayed slavery abolition, causing more than half a million Black people to be enslaved in the British Empire
For
@nowtoronto
's cover story, I interviewed the UN's Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing
@leilanifarha
on the role of big finance in Toronto's affordable housing crisis, how Airbnb is exacerbating it & why it's not entirely a supply & demand issue
This is absolutely horrifying and wrong. Since the pandemic, there have been MORE hate crimes against Asian people in Canada per capita than in the US.
Hey Canadians who’ve remained silent about the
#Atlanta
attack on Asian women because that sort of hate doesn’t happen here— a white man, unprovoked, pulled a knife on my
#Asian
partner on the

in front of our loft today. I have no words, my heart is officially broken.
So, last Friday night, I got the dreaded COVID-19 app alert that I had been in close contact with a positive case. I got a test on Saturday afternoon in Toronto and still haven't got my results yet. I've been in self-isolation for five days.
Why is Toronto waging a legal battle against Khaleel Seivwright, the carpenter building tiny shelters for the homeless? And what is the role of local architects in housing justice? I try to answer these questions and more in my latest for

So the Ryerson School of Fashion posted some Instagram stories about Suzanne Rogers (who has donated $2 mil to the school) posing for photos with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. But they deleted it and posted this instead.
There was one day last summer where Samantha Edwards only took 172 steps. The former figure skater explains how she got out of her pandemic rut by lacing up and hitting the ice — and shares the best outdoor ice rinks in Toronto.

I wrote this week's

Are we building a city for lonely people? For this week's

, pay your writers! it's unethical for you to pretend to be a progressive paper and refuse to pay your workers. You've owed Kieran $2,147 for over a year now. Pay up.

Bought myself some prescription blue light glasses because I was getting headaches every single day and I think they’re working? These bad boys were the cheapest ones I could find but also make me feel like a cool 70s librarian.
I really enjoyed chatting with
@JenSookfongLee
about her new memoir, Superfan.
Highly recommend if you're into: complicated mother daughter relationships, Anne of Green Gables as grief therapy, life lessons from Rihanna, Asian-Canadian identity.
@bananafitz
I've had to mute so many accounts because it got to be too much. It's all fun and games dunking on bad renderings until someone mentions zoning or midrise buildings and then it gets out of control.
In February 2020, a young woman was murdered while working at a massage parlour in Toronto. The attack reverberated through the community. Advocacy groups were furious that despite years of calling for greater protections, their warnings had gone unheard.

Wallflower, my fav neighbourhood restaurant (and I don't even live around there anymore!) just closed and my heart is breaking. Even worse, I don't think we can even emotionally process how many places are shuttering (Cold Tea, Mod Club, Pete's) because we all feel too numb now
Today is

Hi! I'm working on a story about noise and the pandemic and would love to speak with Torontonians who have had to deal w/ seemingly inescapable noise, like nonstop construction, loud neighbours or overlapping Zoom calls. Got a story? DM me or email at samantha.h.edwards

When the city's Medical Officer of Health (Dr. Eileen de Villa) is satisfied each establishment has complied with her order, the order will be lifted.
A fourth establishment is in the process of being served. I will update this thread when it's named.
If airlines are going to keep delaying flights, airports need to be more more entertaining. Give me a movie theatre! A bookstore! Any restaurant other than a Firkin. (I am stuck at Halifax Stanfield, where there is none of the above)
Toronto, we're back to Stage 2 for 28 days. Here's what closing:
- indoor dining and drinking at restaurants and bars
- gyms, fitness centres and casinos
- movie theatres
- performing arts centres and venues
- personal care services where face coverings must be removed

BIG NEWS IN ONTARIO! As of today, we can finally expand our bubbles/social circles, and so begins the in-fighting between friend groups and families as we decide who to merge with.
NEW: As of today, you can now create a household social circle and merge it with another household social circle.
You will be able to welcome that group into your household + hug them.

This has been a long, frustrating week, but it’s been validating to see BIPOC Canadian journalists speak out about racism they’ve experienced and witnessed within so many newsrooms. I am beyond grateful for their bravery.
