Director of THE MATADOR, DOM HEMINGWAY, THE PERFECTION, THE LINGUINI INCIDENT, 12 eps of GIRLS pilots UGLY BETTY, CRIMINAL MINDS, ZOEYS EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST
Yes. My dad kissed me and told me he loved me and inspired me to be the best person I could be and respect people and take/give love because it’s the most important thing in the world. I miss him everyday.
My yearly reminder that Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is a masterpiece & it's a deep shame that Rooney Mara didn't get to play Lisbeth Salander in more films. She's incredible, as is Craig. And that script by Steve Zallion- wow. What an adaptation. A great thriller
33 yrs ago (when I was 25) I made my 1st film THE LINGUINI INCIDENT (w/ David Bowie, Rosanna Arquette, Eszter Balint, Buck Henry & Marlee Matlin no less). It was a hot mess, recut & dumped. I got the rights back, did a 4k director's cut & ystday signed a bluray deal! Out in '24!
If this was 15 years ago, THE BURIAL would have been released in theaters & done solid box office & Jamie Foxx would totally be nominated for best actor. The world has changed, and now it's dumped on Amazon. But Foxx still deserves the nom. It's a truly thrilling piece of acting
I'm finally proud of my 1st film. It only took 30 years. In 1991 the film was taken away from me in editing. Broke my heart. I finally got rights back, created a Director's cut & today THE LINGUINI INCIDENT is finally out. Please spread the word. Doing this by hand.
#davidbowie
Okay RRR-- I put you off for too long. And well, as promised, you are a joyful, insane, violent, musical, emotional winner. More so. A truly FANTASTIC film. Director S. S. Rajamouli has made an epic, smile from ear 2 ear, masterpiece of cinematic exuberance. On Netflix.
This guy deserves our praise not mockery. Maintaining a career in the arts is tough— In times of fiscal trouble, he has certainly shown that he can maintain his dignity. He obviously needs to earn money, and he is doing it. In my book, that’s fucking cool.
In 1992 my oddball 1st film, THE LINGUINI INCIDENT starring David Bowie (!) was released. It wasn’t my cut & it was super tough living w/ that. Well, I finally got the rights back (!) & have re-cut it. Added stuff. Made a 4k transfer. It’s pretty awesome. Blu-Ray distros: DM me.
My favorite actor John Cazale would have been 85 today. 5 films - 5 best pic nominations. Dead at 42. I often wonder if I would have gotten to work with him. I sure would have tried. My Emmy nominated HBO documentary I KNEW IT WAS YOU: REDISCOVERING JOHN CAZALE is avail on iTunes
The first of my two THE HANDMAID'S TALE
@HandmaidsOnHulu
that I directed "drops" tonight. Despite the Canadian cold, the Covid protocols and the difficult material, it was one the very best creative experiences I've ever had. Check it out if that's your thing.
Sort of amazing & horrifying that my union— the Director’s Guild of America— has not issued a statement in support of the (not enough) women they represent. Harvey is a monster, but he’s not alone, and we need to be clear and loud— any actions of harassment are unacceptable.
If you live in LA you’ve probably heard of Matt Holzman. Or heard him on KCRW. He was a friend to many & a best friend to me. He died today. I miss him already & forever. He loved life as no other. He ate it up & lived every minute of it. Sharing it w/ everyone in his orbit. RIP
PRINCE OF THE CITY is one of Lumet’s very best films. A messy, sprawling epic of friendship and corruption. Treat Williams lead an incredible cast of New York City actors. RIP Mr. Williams.
Oh man— I’m so excited for everyone to see episode 407 of
#TheHandmaidsTale
that drops tonight. I was lucky enough to direct.
@YahlinChang
‘s brilliant script—Lizzie, OT, Yvonne, Samira— the whole cast is off the hook — let me just say this—Buckle the emotional fuck up....
10 yrs ago I directed a 40 minute HBO doc-- I KNEW IT WAS YOU: REDISCOVERING JOHN CAZALE. It's on Amazon & youtube. We spoke to Pacino, Streep, Coppola, Lumet, Hackman, DeNiro about this brilliant actor, whose life ended way too soon. Incredibly proud of this film. Check it out
Remembering John Cazale, left, who was born on this day in 1935. The actor only appeared in five films, all nominated for Best Picture: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon (pictured here), and The Deer Hunter.
ED WOOD is a masterpiece. A joyous, funny, humane & uniquely odd ode to a true Hollywood dreamer. I love this movie like no other. See it if you haven't -- especially with co-screenwriter Larry Kararszewski doing a Q & A.
“Really? Worst film you ever saw. Well, my next one will be better.”
On 8/27, co-writer
@Karaszewski
joins for a Q&A after ED WOOD, Tim Burton's ode to cinema’s most misunderstood auteur.
Stay tuned for a 3-film Ed Wood centennial celebration on 10/10!
4 THE LOST DAUGHTER I’m still haunted by this film, weeks after seeing it. That fact alone is worth savoring. But there’s so much at play here— Maggie Gyllenhaal’s mysterious, turbulent Greek set drama is subtle, smart and deeply impactful. Olivia Colman leads a great cast.
One of the best film books ever. Personal, honest and fascinating. I've read it so many times. And her later doc about making APOCALYPSE NOW was also extraordinary RIP Eleanor Coppola.
This one surprised me. So many smart choices in the tense & emotional SPENCER, starting w/ decision to look at Diana's life over only 3 days. Kristen Stewart is fantastic, as is Steven Knight's script, Johnny Greenwood's dizzying score & Wakana Yoshihara's brilliant make up/hair
Fucking warrior. I can't imagine what it would take to testify against your rapist. Not only is she a very fine actress, she's an amazingly tough, brave, honest human.
If you're an independent filmmaker it's always useful to follow Werner Herzog's 24 maxims to making movies, including
#9
"Carry bolt cutters everywhere"
#10
"Thwart institutional cowardice" and
#8
"There is never an excuse not to finish a film"
THE PERFECTION on
@netflix
is trending and I’m overwhelmed. Thank you everyone for watching!! Here is a bloody
@LoganLaurice
and me enjoying the last day of filming in Vancouver. Feel the same way tonight.
@HandmaidsOnHulu
One of the best parts of directing is having a front row seat to brilliant acting. Lizzie &
@Y_Strahovski
were so powerful in this scene.Take after take they just fully went for it. And Lizzie's last close up--DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!--holy hell-Extraordinary...
I think about my 6 yrs directing on GIRLS- The great writing, shooting in NYC in the summer which is the best, working w/ those amazing actors at start of their careers, the crews & being challenged every ep to live up to Lena's high standards. A true joy
I’ve had so many ups & downs in my 30 yr career. I’ve won awards & I’ve had my phone shut off cause I was broke. I fired agents & been dumped by them. I’ve gotten jobs, lost jobs, been down, been up. Still, I keep at it. Anyway THE MATADOR w/Pierce Brosnan is now on Amazon prime
Thank you
@rianjohnson
- the new STAR WARS is ridiculously entertaining, super smart and exquisitely executed- full of action, humor and heart. It’s a tour de FORCE. (I’m sorry)
My 2009 Emmy nominated short doc I KNEW IT WAS YOU: REDISCOVERING JOHN CAZALE is streaming illegally on YouTube (catch it while you can) and is avail on Amazon. We talked to Meryl Streep, De Niro, Pacino, Hackman, Coppola. Seek it out
For the love of fuck. This greedy motherfucker hates movies, hates artists, hates writers. He’s a star fucking hatchet man who botched CNN, bumblefucked MAX or whatever that jerk wants to call it this week, and tried to decimate TCM. And now he gets to vote for Oscars? Ridiculous
Republican. Democrat. If you’re a sexual predator you’ve got to go (To jail) And if you’re enabling a predator that’s almost worse. Shame on LA’s mayor. Amazing reporting by
@yashar
1. Exclusive: Sources tell me that LA Mayor
@ericgarcetti
witnessed his top advisor Rick Jacobs sexually harass and assault people over the past six years. And not only did the Mayor not do anything to stop it, he's kept Jacobs in his position.
BABY REINDEER on Netflix is an impossibly good show. What you think it is, it's not. What you fear it is, it isn't. It's funny, strange, and unnerving. It's also sad and yet, full of hope. I cried at the end, surprisingly moved. I loved it. Amazing acting/writing/directing
Thing is--What execs like Zaslov don't seem to understand--is that creators bleed for our art. It consumes us & the work becomes part of our DNA. We spend time away from loved ones & sacrifice years of our lives on projects. To just shelf something--To not let it be seen--FUCK
A little over a year after the shelving of 'Batgirl' sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, Warner Bros. is putting another of its films in the studio vault. The studio no longer plans to release 'Coyote vs. Acme'
If you're looking for a brutal, high body count action movie you could do far worse than EXTRACTION on Netflix. It's extremely well constructed, with great production values, smart casting and awesome, extremely well choreographed action.
I was a Coppola nut as a kid, & Frederic Forrest kept showing up in all the films I obsessed over. THE CONVERSATION, HAMMET, & of course APOCALYPSE NOW (not to mention VALLEY GIRL). FF was always incredibly malleable as an actor & always indelible. Never get out of the boat. RIP
Posing on the set of THE PERFECTION with
@LoganLaurice
and Allison Williams. It looks like I’m missing my left leg which sort of makes sense with this film
On the 50th anniversary of THE GODFATHER might I suggest my HBO doc on John Cazale —the brilliant, sensitive and much missed actor who played Fredo. He was only in 5 movies— all classics— all were nominated for Oscars. He died tragically at 42. It’s on iTunes.
The great actor & diarist
@RichardEGrant
A POCKETFUL OF HAPPINESS about the life & death of his remarkable soulmate Joan is an almost levitating read. It’s so moving, so honest (so dishy) that it breathes wondrous life into Joan even as her breaths diminish. A miracle of a book.
Come on Oscars!!
@TheAcademy
-- Editors and Cinematographers are true artists who are hands-on involved in nearly every facet of a film. They are PARTNERS with the director. It's crazy and defeating that you're not including them in the broadcast.
Noah Baumbach’s acutely observed MARRIAGE STORY is one tough film. It’s also very funny, humane & sad. Also can’t state enough how good Adam Driver & ScarJo are, as well as supporting cast Alda, Dern, Liotta, Weaver & Julie Hagerdy & kid actor Azhy Robertson. It’s a special film
Obscure YT of the day: Richard Shepard (THE MATADOR) directed the thriller OXYGEN in 1999, shot with verve in NYC (there's a midtown car chase!). Maura Tierney is the cop. Adrien Brody (pre-Pianist) is the psycho who's buried a woman alive!
The 3 yr journey to bring my director's cut of ROSANNA ARQUETTE/DAVID BOWIE film THE LINGUINI INCIDENT is almost over. One month til street date. Pre-order if u can. Thank u
@mvdentgroup
@indeeproducer
for making this awesome disc. Finding this in mail 2day was a f--cking THRILL
6.THE NORTHMAN. Robert Eggers most ambitious film struggled at the box office, but fuck that. It’s big, bold, original, thoughtful, action packed, disturbing and truly goes 4 it. And Nicole Kidman is utterly terrifying. What’s not to love?
No spoilers here (under penalty of death) but fun behind the scenes photo of Jacob Tremblay on the set on new TWILIGHT ZONE watching
@WilliamShatner
in the original TWILIGHT ZONE
How the hell did I get Rosanna Arquette, David Bowie!, Eszter Balint, Buck Henry & Marlee Matlin for my 1st film when I was 25? How did it get taken away from me? How did I get rights back 30 yrs later? How did I recut it? THE LINGUINI INCIDENT: Directors Cut. Come join us!
My 1st feature. I was 25– and not a boy genius. A disaster for me in so many ways. The film was recut by the producer, it opened (& closed) on the tragic weekend of the 92 LA riots & it stalled my career for years. That said-flawed & dated-I still love it. It’s on YouTube.
Congrats to the cast and crew of CRIMINAL MINDS
@CrimMinds_CBS
. After 15 seasons (!!) you finished filming your last episode tonight. It was a thrill to direct that pilot so long ago. That's a heck of a lot of serial killers you've caught. Thank you.
ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST premieres tonight on NBC. Check it out only if you love singing, dancing, humor and heart! An amazing group of people in front of, and behind, the camera. Love this show. Proud to have directed the pilot.
Such a fan of
@jcolburnlevy
- she really can do anything- & tonight's ep of
@austinwinsberg
's ZOEY'S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST (on NBC/Hulu) promises to showcase that. Jane is such a funny, talented actress & she gets to sing & dance all ep. Directed by the awesome
@jonturteltaub
So many people hurting in biz right now. Many because of Zaslav. This pay package is insane. Especially when so many films r shelved 4 tax reasons. Artists bleed for their work. 2 not show them EVER just sucks.If Zaslav had an ounce of love of cinema he would let those films free
6 SPENCER The specificity of the limited story time frame allows u to feel for Di in a original fresh way. It’s such smart idea. And Kristen Stewart continues to make savvy career choices & give deep, complex performances. She’s great here. Music, Design, Hair depts also shine
@austinwinsberg
created an amazing series. Full of heart and humor and Austin’s beautiful view of the world.
@jcolburnlevy
is an incredible actress who took the lead and soared. What a great group of people. Skyler, Mary, Alex, john, Peter, Lauren and all the folks behind camera
If you need to clear your head from the toxicity, go to the movies & see Greta Getwig’s LADY BIRD. It’s transporting. And wonderful. And tiny and large and imperfectly beautiful. If you can’t tell, I loved it.
Been putting it off forever. Excuses. Excuses. Mostly just fear of seeing what many consider the most harrowing war film ever. Elem Klimov’s COME AND SEE. Well, I dug in, & it’s extraordinarily. A very big & yet very intimate story. Tragic, brutal. Unsparing. On
@criterionchannl
One of my storyboards from THE PERFECTION. Allison and
@LoganLaurice
made fun of my drawing talents--As did everyone else (including me!). BUT-- if you've seen the movie it's pretty clear what shot this is...
From tracking down the negative, to acquiring the rights, to the release of my director's cut, it's all been by hand. No big company. No studio. No publicist. Just me & the people who love THE LINGUINI INCIDENT. Excited that the NYTimes did this article.
@Dannystrong
's DOPESICK on
@hulu
continues to get stronger, more infuriating & more brilliant w/ each episode. Rarely have I seen such intense research & great writing married so well. One company, blinded by greed, hurting millions of people. A true American horror story
13 days til THE PERFECTION hits Netflix. This is a totally staged photo of me “directing” Allison & Logan. It’s always important to be pointing in these photos. I would say 90% of all behind the scenes photos of directors at work have them pointing. (Usually to where catering is)
Our crazy/bonkers film THE PERFECTION debuts (drops? Premieres? Opens?) on
@netflix
MAY 24. Tomorrow- our trailer goes out. Very excited 4 the world 2get a sense of what we’ve been up to. And also excited, as a filmmaker, 2see how this whole Netflix experience goes down
This 4th of July I’m thinking ofJohn Huston hanging on for dear life to a giant American flag in William Richert’s wonderfully insane WINTER KILLS which was (and still is) one of my fav conspiracy films. With an awesome Jeff Bridges, Anthony Perkins and a to die for Belinda Bauer
Turbulent, tense and just beautifully made-
@mgyllenhaal
's THE LOST DAUGHTER feels like a fantastic discovery. A short, perfect, disturbing journey where you hold your breath til the end. Stellar perfs from Olivia Coleman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson &
@Dagword
Rewatch of MONA LISA on
@criterionchannl
is a true winner. Gritty & dark, but with a huge beating heart— it’s full of amazing performances starting with a mesmerizing Bob Hoskins, a heartbreakingly tough Cathy Tyson & a truly evil Michael Caine. Screenwriter/director Neil Jordan.
Congrats to my friend, the multi- talented threat, the incredible, indelible Jane Levy
@jcolburnlevy
on your
@goldenglobes
nomination for ZOEYS EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST. Yes!!!!!
the scene in girls where Hannah is looking out the window and she sees Adam looking out a different window at Jessa and just from the way they are both looking at each other she works out they are sleeping together…. literally cinema
At 1st it was going to be a hydraulic 2 level boat set. Then it was going to be a real boat brought into an airplane hanger w/ green screen around it. Finally- it was just a boat.A cold, blustery boat for 5 days/nights of filming. Love when it works out correctly.
#HandmaidsTale
All hail
@KarinaLongworth
& her brilliant
@RememberThisPod
— POLLY PLATT: THE INVISIBLE WOMAN. An absolutely gripping story. From LAST PICTURE SHOW to PAPER MOON to TERMS OF ENDEARMENT to SAY ANYTHING to BOTTLE ROCKET Platt’s enormous contribution to films no longer ignored
Todd Haynes' MAY DECEMBER is such a movie-watching delight it's hard to even fathom. At once funny & deeply sad, it's melodramatic in the best way, superbly written acted & directed, & deeply thoughtful & uncomfortable. It's also fun. And dark. And I can't wait to watch it again
