Excited that "Can I Not Be Suicidal On a Sunday?": Understanding Technology-Mediated Pathways to Mental Health Support will be a part of
#CHI2021
. Our work highlights intersections between justice, identity, and mental health in the lives of those searching for care in India.
From Child Line to the emergency lines, from local hospital lines to senior citizens helplines, it is not uncommon to see helpline-based initiatives around India. Mental health is no exception, with dozens of potential lines to call. But what happens after dialing a helpline? 1/
Some exciting news --- I am beginning my internship at
@ImpossibleFoods
this week! Very thankful to
@TYLERSlMONS

some random person: "uh excuse me sir, are you an actor?"
me: "well, uh, no. i did do musical theater in high school haha. but really, aren't we all actors in a sens--"
random person: "uh so we're shooting a scene, this is a film set"
I have the honor of presenting this work tomorrow morning at
#CHI2022
, during the Justice and Equity I session from 9:00 - 10:15am in Room 297. If you are interested in intersections of mental health, power, and technology (and their history!), do attend!
There's a long history in the US of stigma around politicians speaking publicly about mental illness _while_ in office.
I see Senator Fetterman's open disclosure as demonstrating some of the progress that has been made in destigmatizing mental illness. Wishing him the best 💙
Feeling very lucky to have passed my qualifying exam! Special thanks go to my committee (Dr.
@andreagparker
, Dr. Jennifer Kim, and Dr. Michael Best), my advisors (
@nehakumar
and
@munmun10
), my mentors (including
@amt_shrma
), and my labmates for their support and care throughout.
What a nice way to head into the weekend, with more
@SocwebGT
members "growing up": congratulations to
@SachinPendse
(coadvised with
@nehakumar
) and
@MattSKim
for passing their HCC and CS qualifiers today!! This is one big milestone ticked for you two!!
On online platforms, we see robust discussions + debates around mental health.
How might these discussions influence experiences of illness, particularly for those in resource-scarce areas?

Anytime I read the phrase "bears implications" in an academic paper, I think to myself "Yes! This is exactly what we *should* be asking! What are the implications for bears?!" and now that you've read this tweet, congratulations, you'll do it now too.
Have you used AI chatbots (e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT) for mental health support?
We are conducting a study to understand how individuals have used AI chatbots for mental health support, including benefits and risks.

There is a long history in the United States (and most of the world, unfortunately) of public health strategies for mental illness being centered around "out of sight, out of mind" OR around forms of surveillance. This policy combines both of those things in the worst way. 🧵
Breaking News: New York City will hospitalize more mentally ill people involuntarily, in a push to remove them from streets and subways, Mayor Eric Adams said.
We hear the terms "mental health" + "mental illness" quite often – have you ever wondered where these concepts came from? And more, what biases might have been built into how we think about mental health/illness? If you're interested in history, bias, and digital care, join!

If I was a scientist living on Howland/Baker Island, I think I'd go to bed at 11:59pm every night with a smile on my face, knowing that the academic world (confronted with AoE deadlines) is thankful for my time zone.

"I'll never forget you all!" I hurriedly say as the seconds count down and a BlueJeans notification tells me that I'm about to be teleported out of the "breakout room" I'm currently in.
With more long nights/early sunsets ahead, it’s not uncommon to experience a dip in mental health during this time of year (and with no help from a global pandemic). Concerned and looking for strategies, I decided to call a close friend who I know as an expert quarantiner. [1/]
As a result of my PhD research, I'm pretty sure my parents have learned way more about Reddit (and its subcultures) than they ever expected and/or wanted to
Once, when I was having a *really* rough week emotionally during my first semester of my PhD, some anonymous person (maybe a labmate/CODA employee) wrote this note on one of my brainstorming sheets. I don't know who it was, but to this day, it still brings me a smile :)
Hi
@WakaFlocka

I too work in mental health and suicide prevention, particularly among people with different marginalized identities. Would love to chat more!

Excited to see this out! In this new study in

, we analyze the role of regional disparities in how people search for mental health resources. Our work highlights the importance of considering offline disparities in language-based platforms + embedding relevant resources.
The journey to understand one's

can often begin in Google’s search bar. However, regional disparities in mental healthcare can make it harder for some to find the right words to use.

Currently thinking about how naked I am going to feel when mask wearing is no longer necessary and I can just...walk outside...no mask...my whole face...exposed... 😳
I have exactly one (1) superpower, and that’s being able to tell whether the bar/restaurant I’m at is playing an Arctic Monkeys song, regardless of how softly it’s being played
Many congratulations to my co-advisor (

Love when a TikTok food influencer is like “It’s super simple, this is all you need to make [thing]” and then names ingredients that would necessitate either A. taking out a mortgage or B. cutting a underhanded deal with an renegade Whole Foods employee to obtain.
it's kind of wild how one day some person just decided, on a whim, to try milking an oat, and now we have this delicious drink for our smoothies/cereal/etc

Hello all – it has come to my attention that many are curious why I am not the only one in my Twitter profile picture.
This is me and my costar from a short lived buddy comedy series entitled "Como Te Llama?"
I will not be answering further questions at this time. Thank you.
me: “he’s burnt it all down! it's the death of twitter! can't you see??”
my therapist: “hmm let’s try some reframing, could twitter's death actually be better for our mental health?”
me: “sure but also where else would i cash in this conversation for like-fueled serotonin??”
Strongly agree – these factors were pretty instrumental in why I decided to pursue a PhD. I'll also add that (for me) it's been nice to have a higher level of creative agency over the work that I produce. I like seeing how my lived experiences can be a part of my creative output.
kinda wild how the covid booster does absolutely nothing to some people…meanwhile i’m stuck in bed living out some kind of mini victorian era-esque Consumption
Few things more disorienting than seeing a daylong calendar event you made titled "Presentation" in your calendar and being completely uncertain what it is
The LaTeX commands/tricks/hacks you use in your first paper truly end up getting copied over to every successive paper you write for the rest of your academic career.
just as siddhartha gautama left the palace to understand the nature of suffering, so too did barbie leave barbieland for the real world, similarly in pursuit of enlightenment
Few things more consistent in my life than my ability to listen to the exact same song on repeat, over and over again, for days on end (particularly when paper writing).

Me: So Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, England — all are part of the island of Great Britain.
My mom: No no, just Britain, we don’t say “great” Britain in this house.
Really appreciate Meghan Markle speaking so openly about her mental health (and am so frustrated and sad hearing what she was subjected to).
Research suggests that these kinds of disclosures can be really powerful in directing people towards care.
This is this generation's equivalent of the Princess Diana interview. But it's going to have a LOT more impact - and MANY more repercussions.

This is one large fear I have around "therapy language" becoming so common in everyday life. There is so much privilege associated with knowing (often biased!) clinical terms. I worry those who don't know the "right" terms may feel self-doubt re: whether their distress is "real."
Therapy has the potential to create very self-centered people who believe their perspective and analysis is always correct, is always the center of the universe, and everyone else is just not as informed or knowledgeable, because *you go to therapy* and they don’t.
The phrase "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" has never rung truer than in 2020, a year in which I'm about to send an email out about a joint breakfast/coffee hour/happy hour/dinner to people in 6 different time zones.
Guy in elevator: "So, what'd you get?"
Me, picking up delivery: "Ah yeah, some veg biryani."
Guy (slightly disappointed, or feigning it): "Oh............you know there's no such thing, right?"
Me: "Guess I'm eating pulao tonight."
I also want to note --- between August 2019 to May 2024, the period in which I completed my doctoral research, approximately 2,684,000 people died of suicide globally. My work is dedicated to their memory.
me, waking up: ah yes, happy birthday to me! time to celebrate another year of Adulthood while pondering the inevitable passage of time, and wonder if i'm now old enough to start desperately grasping at the straws of my continually passing youth

What a *fantastic* way to democratize the design of interventions and counter a long history of top-down approaches.
Really inspiring to see a study design that so deeply values the lived experiences of people with depression, and includes them as expert collaborators.
📢 I am so excited to announce that The UPLIFT THE WEB Challenge is open for submissions, NOW until May 1, 2024!
This is a massive team science project to identify the most effective brief (< 10 minute) online interventions for depression

This is a really good move from the senators, particularly given the (well-researched!) security holes and privacy policy loopholes that exist in many digital mental health apps.
girl behind me in line at taco bell: "ugh, that was a cooking disaster. but you know, i still can't believe i cried over literal frozen chicken tonight."
her friend: "don’t worry, i’ve cried over sillier things, once...i cried over a man"
girl behind me: *solemnly nods*
Having now finished both seasons of Tuca and Bertie, I'm in awe of how well (and how artfully) the show depicts really complex parts of mental health, relationships, and friendships. Really glad it was renewed for a third season.
