Extremely honored to be named a 2021 STAT Wunderkind for my PhD work identifying cellular metabolism as a determinant of whether or not a stem cell can initiate a neoplasm

my parents are both doctors & because of that i was doing molecular biology when i was 15 and learned about md-phd programs when i was 16 if you think nepo babies don't get ahead in medicine you are not very bright
My building has a gym that I use pretty regularly. This morning a white resident told me that staff aren’t allowed to use the gym, didn’t believe me when I told her I live here, and then called the manager on me.
Being a POC in America is exhausting.
my favorite story about my PhD advisor is that when she was applying to grad school instead of taking the GRE she submitted a 3 page essay to programs on why the GRE was useless
If you are a person of color in a predominantly white lab, or a queer person in a predominantly straight lab, or a woman in a predominantly male lab ..…. An anonymous lab survey is not anonymous ………
Someone in clinic just asked me if my PhD took a year or two and when I said no it took 4 they said “oh that’s a long time maybe you’re not that smart” I —
Was walking into my building in scrubs, hospital ID and stethoscope on, and a white lady in front of me kept looking over her shoulder at me. We got to the elevator bay and she turned around and demanded to know why I was following her — truly, I hate it here
Shout out to the person who told me I only got a perfect score on my F31 because it was the “minority grant so the bar is lower” who earlier this week posted a black square on Instagram.
pathologists have really got it figured out because y'all look at swirls of purple and pink and then are like "ah yes, fibropapillomatohippopotamosteosarcocarcinoma" and the rest of us just nod along and can't question it
I want to very explicitly say that there is absolutely no contribution you can make to science, no number of people you can train, that makes your sexual harassment OK
Idk what new PhD student needs to hear this but create a system to organize and keep track of your experiments and data from day 1, including your negative data
SO thrilled to share that I matched at my dream program for internal medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital in the Stanbury physician-scientist track!!! Can’t wait to join the
@MGHMedicine
@mghmedres
family for the next phase of my training as a physician-scientist!!
thinking about the young PI who said they only tried to hire international postdocs because they work harder & have fewer personal distractions. i'm sorry but a lot of y'alls concern about this EO is still rooted in xenophobia & viewing immigrants as labor & capital, not people
being a med student is so embarrassing like your attending asks you how to treat pseudomonas and you start talking about suitors outside a room where the mona lisa is taking a bath
grad school is just having 219 tabs open with papers you want to read, closing them without reading them because your computer is being slow and then starting all over
can't help but feel that 3 years of rich white people pearl clutching about homeless ppl in NYC during the pandemic plus a cop mayor would make someone feel empowered to murder a Black man experiencing homelessness w/ mental illness in broad daylight without fear of repercussion
i did my PhD in a pretty big, well funded lab that regularly publishes in CNS. lab was consistently mostly empty before 10 am, after 6 pm, and on weekends. the way some of y'all are so invested in policing trainees' work hours is bizarre and also based in fiction.
Someone vasovagal-ed on my flight and myself and an attending went to help and I tried to leave but YALL the attending started asking me what my differential was and what the physiology was SIR this is a FLIGHT not my medicine rotation
As a senior grad student I’ve really mastered my routine for giving talks:
1) don’t sleep night before
2) have 3 cold brews morning of
3) feel nauseous
4) pee 10 times before talk
5) give talk
6) break out into cold sweat
7) obsess over every word I said
8) drink
9) sleep
no you don't get it, you spend 4 years generating data to put a story together, and then three strangers make you double that amount of data but you only get a few months to do it, and then if it goes well you pay the journal and they publish it
This fantastic new Review discusses the prostate as a sexual organ & how treatment for prostate cancer can affect quality of life in people from sexual and gender minorities, especially those who engage in receptive anal intercourse. Read it here:
teaching a new PhD student about qPCR and something that i think isn't said enough is that not only is experimental failure an inevitable part of science, but it's actually essential. you learn how to do an experiment well by learning all the ways it can go wrong.
told my parents i was considering ID and they said "what? you said you were going to take care of us in our old age? how will you do that if all you know is infectious diseases?" and i cannot stress enough how peak immigrant parent this is
Alright this got attention so let me just say that a lot of y’all are trying to justify this by either (1) dismissing it as “stupidity” or (2) stigmatizing mental illness by equating it with racism. Both are gross.
