Another great conversation in our Grade 3 math PD today was how to support students in the progression from the counting phase to become an “additive thinker”. @HWDSBmath @HWDSB

Loving the conversations in our first week of Grade 3 math PD. Teachers are excited to be talking about math! Part of our first session focuses on representing add/sub while looking at the progression from Grades 1-3. @HWDSBmath @HWDSB

I recently saw @dr_costello speak at #OAME. One of my favourite sessions! Good to see some practical ways retrieval strategies can be incorporated into math learning.
.@dr_costello recommending "daily cumulative review", 4 close-ended procedural questions on different topics each day for 3-5 mins. Helps build skills for long-term permanent consolidation. #rEDTO2024

Another thought that gives me pause. As a teacher who supports students with disabilities, how often are we turning students off math when they are given these problems before they have a good foundation? Struggle is not fun when you don’t have tools to start. #equitablemath
"It will not help [students] identify as mathematicians..they will identify the small group of students who usually come up with these solutions as.. ‘good at math’ despite their success being..to do with prior knowledge" Is productive struggle ethical? Great stuff @greg_ashman

My holiday reading @johnmighton. Many takeaways from this book. Mathematical competence is important for making informed decisions. Anyone can learn math given the right supports. Use research based strategies. AND the importance of practice in becoming competent.

@TorontoTeacherX @tdsb I lived in Denmark for two years when my 3 kids were young. Back to school mid August, 1 week fall break in October, 2 week Christmas, 2 week Easter break. Wasn’t sure at first but ended up loving it. The breaks were good for both teachers and students.

@MrIFox @BulldogsOHL @HWDSB I asked a group of ESL students I worked with today how they liked the game. Their only reply was “there were soo many fights”. Sad that this is their primary memory of their first game. Hockey is not like this in Europe.

@1inhand2inbush1 @marthahradowy @MonteMcNaughton @UniforTheUnion @fordnation Ah, your argument emphasizes the importance of education. Well educated populations are generally also healthier societies. The point is, not funding education and healthcare properly is only a detriment to our society in the long term.
