Well done to our J16s who represented the Northern region today. Special mention for Emily R and Emily S winning the club's first national medals in a while. Here they are being presented with their 🥉 medals by Jess Eddie
#YeeesLeonards
Well done & thank you to our emergency response team! All boats off the bottom racks and hoping it'll just be a muddy mess for us to sweep up next weekend!
As well as some fantastic racing, we also took the opportunity to name our 'new' double in honour of Michael Laing - a stalwart supporter of the school, boat club and Northern rowing in general as well as a coach and a rowing parent of 17 years and counting.
Among Mr Parker's former rowers are three of our current coaches. What he did for rowing both at Leonard's and in the North cannot be summed up in a tweet which is why we will be paying appropriate tribute in time. For now it would be great to see any photos or hear memories.
A great day at one of our favourite venues! Some excellent rowing across ALL age groups. The J14s got their first race under their belt. We also had wins in the J18 girls quads in the morning and afternoon

While the rest of the rowers will be raising funds for the club at the Swimathon, Ella will be taking to the water in Boston helping to raise the profile of the club! The first to attend GB trials from the club for several years, we wish her the best of luck!
#YeeesLeonards
Today comes with the sad news of the death of our club's founder, Bill Parker - still 'Mr Parker' to many. His 35+ years at St Leonard's saw many successes locally and nationally with numerous crews going on to represent England and Great Britain.
Thoroughly deserved award for Mr Stonehouse for over 40 years helping out on that landing stage - and just a few more years after having learned to row from that landing!
The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to Ian Stonehouse from St Leonard's School BC! 🏆
Ian has volunteered at
@STLDBoatClub
's since 1983, and is described as "a tremendous example to every pupil."
Thank you, Ian.
After two agonisingly close races in the eight at Hexham and yesterday's regatta, the J17 girls made it through three rounds to win non-championship (senior) quads
#YeeeesLeonards
It has been a decade of rebuilding after the dark days of the late 2000s, when many existing & prospective rowers headed to other clubs. The position of the club is now much stronger, boasting over 60 members & offering a competitive but inclusive place to row
#YeeeesLeonards
That’s a wrap for the 2018/19 season - the grit and determination shown by the MJ16 four & WJ18 quad and pair in their races today epitomised the season as a whole. Now is the time to reflect on what a great season it has been on and off the water.
Well done to the J15 girls who built on their second place last week with a win today! Special mention to the J15 boys who also came an agonisingly close second
#InDaveWeTrust
Over the last few weeks we have picked up at least one win at Wansbeck, Tees and Tyne but this review means just as much! How you conduct yourself is just as important as the winning and the competing.
: Great things that came out of
@TyneUnitedRC
LDS SBH today.
1) St. Leonard's setting the bar for J / schools crews to be organised, polite and aware.
2) Three crews from an institution not famed for their awareness of others saying thanks to the launch / landing marshalls.
What a great away day - five wins from J15 to J18. 20 rowers coming away with pots:
WJ18 4x
MJ17 4x (fastest junior boat)
WJ16 4x
WJ15 4x+ (morning & afternoon)

Wansbeck has proven to be a happy hunting ground for us this year, the autumn head and now the summer regatta. Congratulations to the girls for wins in the J18 quad, double and single plus a win in WJ16 doubles
#YeeeeesLeonards
#puttheCBPon
The J16 girls got their hands on their prizes at training this morning. Special mention to Emily and Emily who were in the quad and double after also being the fastest women's double at Hylton the previous week.
A fantastic day at the home of rowing for Hexham Regatta! Wins for the WJ14 quad, WJ16 pair and WJ18 quad, as well as a few other close-run finals!
#YesLeonards
Like the Labour Party, SLSBC is now under new management. Introducing our captains, Ella and Andrew, who will be leading the club this season - virtually for a while by the looks of things!

#BleedRed
Great to be after the summer and together again. Fabulous training session in the sunshine on Saturday. We will be in touch with the Year 9s that attended indoor sessions. Anyone else interested in rowing please send a Teams message to Mr Smith or Miss Shaw.
Despite having no actual competition the girls' J18 quad and J16 double still managed to come away with medals as fastest women's quad and double of the day
#YesLeonards
First up in the introductions of our new captains or 'committee.' Ruby in her vice-captain role will be offering our J14s and eventually J12-13 beginners the benefit of her experience. She and Dave will hopefully instil some of their Scouse grit into our younger rowers.
And today is the first in our coaches
#GettingToKnowYou
posts. First up is Graeme the Milkman, our technical expert, giving us a brief overview of his career. Can you spot him in the third photo? 🥛
On
#InternationalWomensDay
here's to our many female athletes who turn up day in & day out and support each other (and the boys) in training, at races & beyond. We have some incredible female role models & are a credit to themselves, the club & the school
#YesLeonards
Finally Mr Smith can breathe a sigh of relief! Beautiful morning for naming our two new boats, ‘Premnagar’ and ‘The Milkman’, in recognition of Mr Proud and Graeme’s contributions to the club over many years

Tomorrow we return to the home of rowing for the first time in two years for Tees LDS and SBH - 35 rowers competing across the day. Arrival times: 7:45am for the LDS and 11:00am for the SBH
#YeeeeesLeonards
A great weekend of racing overall and for our rowers in particular. One win in women's singles and several defeats in finals for our crews. Thanks to our coach and regatta chairman, Michael for his hard work this weekend and in the build-up

Elvet Bridge looking serene at 7:30 this morning. Our first race after the 'winter break' at the home of rowing with 40 pupils racing at Durham Small Boats Head
#YeeesLeonards
#BleedRed
40 rowers at our final session earning their pigs in blankets. Remember, as always, it's bulking season 🍫🍗🥕🧀 We hope everyone linked to the club has a happy & peaceful Christmas.
And that's also a wrap for our after-school sessions. Now for the physical and mental slog of winter and the dark nights!

The tension mounts at the Gala Theatre for the Durham Regatta presentation! Congratulations to the J17 girls for their win in Non Championship quads
#YesLeonards
So we got it wrong ... today, was definitely the last after school session! Exciting times for the J14s venturing above Elvet, some for the first time! Thanks also to Megan, Ruby and Andrew for the coaching

Well done to our J18 girls on their results today - they are heading off all across the UK! They will be a huge, huge miss to the club after setting the standard for the last few years and hopefully laying the foundations for a consistent stream of VI form rowers
#studentathletes
Hopefully they will forgive the joint-intro. Megan's remit was to include our socials but they would class as illegal gatherings for the foreseeable! As a result, she and Ben will be creatively leading our fundraising efforts. Ben remains hopeful for this year's swimathon
#50at50
This afternoon we were at Durham ARC, the home of indoor rowing for the first ergo competition of the season. Well done to all 12 pupils who made the top 4, qualifying for the next round at Maiden Castle. As usual we were joined by our travelling fans bringing the wall of noise.
What a morning - 50 rowers out on the water on the day of our 50th anniversary dinner. That was followed by some old boys and girls' rowing, with the high level steering in our bow-coxed boats baffling the most experienced of GB coxes!
#YesLeonards
#Obelisk
To confirm, there will be no rowing for the duration of lockdown. We hope that rowing has been a pillar (or an obelisk) of strength for rowers over recent months. We urge all squads to support each other to keep up both their spirits & fitness
#YesLeonards

Today it is 'the handyman' Mr Stonehouse, former 'director of rowing'. Now LOVING his role as our boatman, fixing all of our knocks. Hopefully everyone finds this as interesting as I did!
#GettingToKnowYou
Tonight at the AGM, Michael finally handed over the reins after more than 10 years as chairman of the
@NorthernRowing
council. After serving the region so well, we hope this will give him even more time for us ... 😬
#TheSherburnRoadSpecialOne
Always great to see lots of empty racks and a queue at the landing! 40 rowers from J13 to 18 out today (in their own bubbles) to 'officially' start the season
#YesLeonards
Well done to Ella taking the silver at the Virtual British Championships! Hoping that this form translates back on to the water
#YeeeesLeonards
#SuperSunday
We've had a thrilling race in the final of the Year 11 girls' 500m competition, with Meg Knight taking top spot ahead of Ella Shaw in second - and a dead heat for third between Alice Baker and Stefanie Obuba!
#BRVC20
Today we have Michael the (NRC) Chairman. You may know him from such coaching calls as "get that rate up," "get the rate higher" & "the rate is too low!"
#GettingToKnowYou
A great day to round off the regatta season and the careers of the J18s. Wins in the WJ18 quad & single, the womens' pair & open senior coxed quads, plus an agonisingly close second for the J18 boys quad. The Shaws have almost certainly taken the

for this season.
In an unplanned coincidence, today is also the four year anniversary of old boys Ollie and Matty becoming U23 world champions in the lightweight quad in Rotterdam
#Obelisk
#ThROWbackTuesday
After having missed out on their final rowing events and of course Graeme's BBQ, it was great to have the majority of the last two J18 squads back together on Saturday
#Obelisk
Great return to racing this weekend at Durham Regatta. Some good racing from the older squads and (hopefully) fun had by the younger squads and lessons learned about what racing is all about. Not forgetting a handful of rowers getting the ACTUAL best seats in the house!
Very well-deserved for our founder, Mr Parker. St Leonard's then DARC, but not forgetting before both of those - Consett Grammar School BC. As he likes to say, the first club to discover altitude training.
The Beryl Crockford Award recognises outstanding contributions to junior rowing.
We are delighted that our 2020 winners are:
🏆 Bill Parker (
@DurhamARC
/
@STLDBoatClub
)
🏆 Bryan Steel (
@ASRArowing
)

Well done to Emily on her win in women's singles at
@DurhamRegatta
this weekend, following her win in the same event at Hexham. Ending her Leonard's rowing career the way it began
#YesLeonards
Great turnout for our festive get-together! Thank you to Anna & Jude, assisted by Abbie, for running the quiz. Now just a few more training sessions & one big fundraising effort to see out 2019!
Obligatory 'first Friday out- ... you get the idea. Thankfully the workmen (doing a sterling job clearing Prebend's Bridge) packed up for the day & we made it out on to the water for another delightful evening session 👌
As today is the shortest day of the year, we will stick our neck out and give all of our rowers (& coaches) a date to focus on - Tuesday 2nd March when we will finally be able to row after school as well as at weekends
#10weekcountdown
Great news! We are about to bring our boathouse into the 20th century with water and electricity. A Just Giving page has been set up to support this. We would be very grateful for any support - if you unable to donate, a share and a retweet would be great:
In body we are at a very over-grown home of rowing, but in spirit we are at Talkin Tarn, the home of the grand finale of the local regatta circuit!
#YeeeesLeonards
After waving off former vice-captain, Anna today (good luck in Bristol!), we have Alice. In her vice-captain role she will be 'boatwoman' / Mr Stonehouse's under-study - making sure our equipment is looked after at outings and races when they return.
And now we have Dave the Gasman, our patient beginner coach. You may know him from such coaching calls as "Churchill!", "chin him!" and "head still, Will!"
#GettingToKnowYou
Going back to the days of black and white photos. All the way back to 2006, when Leonard's won 18 out of 20 events entered. ONE of the school's (many) great sporting achievements! 😬
@slsbccoaches
are very pleased with a good day at the office. Strong rows across all squads, J14-18. Both M & WJ15 particularly impressed on their sweep debuts. There were pots for:
WJ16 4x
WJ16 2x
MJ15 2x
WJ14 2x
#YeeesLeonards
And so Callum and Joseph go one (or two rather!) better than Ella and Ruby, finishing an agonising 4th! Just outside of the medals! Excellent result!
#YeeeeesLeonards
#BleedRed
The usual start-of-season thought. This year is going to be an unusual one. Hopefully rowing will act as a much-needed 'release'. Please look after yourselves and each other though. There are more important things in life than rowing, not many though obviously!
#MondayMotivation
A great atmosphere for our, hopefully inaugural, parents' curry night. The coaches 'Dad's Army' won the quiz: 'easily' was the official verdict. If any other parents would like to be involved in our parents group, please get in touch
#premnagar
First big announcement: the club turns 50 in September and we plan to celebrate with a dinner at the Ramside on Sat 2nd Oct. Right now we are more hopeful than confident that this can happen, but we do have the option to rearrange. So tentatively save the date!
#FeelGoodFriday
Well done to our very own Miss Shaw & Mr Stonehouse winning the regional 'volunteer of the year' and 'lifetime achievement' awards respectively. Two incredibly worthy winners without who the club would have been unable to train or compete over the last 15 years
@NorthernRowing

Massive well done to Ella whose 1 minute ergo score got her 6th in GB and 9th out of the four nations involved! Hopefully this can be inspiration to everyone to work on your goals, however long or short or big or small!

Great to be finally back out on the river! With a disrupted start to the season on and off the water, we have our fingers crossed for some land training to start soon 🤞
