I served with the BN that Gov Walz was slotted in as it’s CSM. I was attached to the MN NG 1-125 FA BN as part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division during our 16 month deployment to Babel Province, Iraq.

CSM Behrends did not have to be on this mission. It was irregular for such a senior enlisted soldier to go on missions like this. But CSM Behrends was not going to have his soldiers go on such a mission without him being right there with us.

The BN was a battle-space owner on one of the main pilgrimage routes from Iran to the Shia holy cities of Karbala and Najaf. Our fight was with Iranian sponsored Jaysh al Mahdi special groups.

Walz bailed on a deployment before his contracted time of service was over with 1-125 FA BN. As I’ve posted before, I was attached to 1-125 FA during the 16 month deployment while I was on a Tactical HUMINT Team.

I tell this story because it was a risky mission. If the terrorist group had known just the four of us were out there, we very easily could have been overwhelmed and killed. Or worse, captured.

The mission entailed dropping a small team off in this area. There were only four people on this mission, by design. CSM Behrends, our armed American Citizen Iraqi translator, a squad designated marksman, and me.

This allowed the unit’s surveillance assets to zero in on this grid coordinate and direct our fires to this location, killing one of the insurgents, and blowing the arm off another. Additional actionable intelligence was gained because of this mission.

After many hours we finally found the impression in the ground made from the baseplate of the terrorists mortar system. Close by was a berm with burn marks from katusha rocket launches. We recorded the 10 digit grid, and were extracted out of the area.

A large cordon and search mission was conducted in another area to draw the attention of the terrorists away from where our mission was taking place. Our four man team had no vehicles, no security element-just our weapons and the water we could carry, in enemy territory.

We had to keep a very small footprint, as we didn’t want the terrorists to know we were in the area. We spent the whole day in 120 degree heat searching for the exact point from which the terrorists had been attacking our base with indirect fire.

At this time, a large part of the MN National Guard consisted of combat veterans, including several seasoned combat arms battalions. I know. I served a 16 month deployment to Iraq with the MN National Guard during the period of heaviest fighting. 06/07 This is a sickness.

Mayor Jacob Frey wanted the Governor to send in the National Guard to restore the peace in Minneapolis. Tim Walz mocked his fellow Guardsmen as “19 year-old cooks.” Which is ridiculous. My cousin deployed with the National Guard in Minneapolis and he was an Army Ranger.

Chaplain Bjertness was my Chaplain in Iraq, the BN Chaplain for the unit Walz was supposed to deploy with. He earned a CAB. I have a neat story about him under tragic circumstances I’ll post soon. He was a source of inspiration for all of us.

I’ve heard many stories about Gov Walz’ military career over the years from friends, read some of the letters, and certainly followed the news of Governor Walz’ nomination for Vice President for the Democrat party. No doubt he deserves acknowledgment for his 24 years of service.

Now to the end of the Governor’s military service, interestingly I too had the opportunity to be considered for sergeant major rank, the next level grade, and chose a different path because I couldn’t commit to the additional service and chose to retire.

This unit blew up no Iraqi neighborhoods. It worked hand in hand with the Iraqi police to build water treatment plants, provided medical care to hundreds, and protected the Iraqi people from psychopathic Iranian proxies. Ask me how I know.

One of the best series I have ever watched. I may be biased, as a Tactical HUMINT guy, but the authenticity and nuance in the characters, culture and operations is mind blowing. All the little details are spot on. The main character served IRL in the elite unit depicted. 👊🏼🇺🇸🇮🇱
