#InYourCommunity On February 1, @SDSheriff recognized 19 young adults from high schools across #SanDiegoCounty as graduates of our first-ever Responder Ready: Public Safety Communications Academy. The Responder Ready Academy was created to introduce young adults in high school to the profession of public safety communications and dispatching. Public safety dispatchers working for law enforcement and fire agencies answer non-emergency and 9-1-1 emergency calls from the communities they serve and coordinate the response of Sheriff’s Deputies, police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel. Throughout the 12-week academy, the graduates received 48 hours of classroom instruction and participated in practical exercises, covering topics such as: ▪️critical thinking and decision-making ▪️professionalism ▪️ethics ▪️customer service principles ▪️verbal and written communication skills ▪️procedures used in public safety call taking and dispatching In addition to classroom instruction, each graduate gained firsthand experience by participating in sit-alongs with dispatchers at various law enforcement and fire communications centers in the county. These sit-alongs allowed them to see first-hand how public safety dispatchers play a role in helping keep their communities safe. The successful completion of the Responder Ready Academy underscores the San Diego County Sheriff's Office's dedication to empowering young adults and cultivating interest in public safety careers.
