In December 2024, SCI hosted a conversation with @dviyer and Eric Ward reflecting on the US election results. They discussed the rise of authoritarianism, the role of grassroots organising, the impact of disinformation, and the need for cross-border collaboration. Key takeaways and the full recording are now available: 👉

Last week, we hosted journalist, director and film producer, @trevorbirney for a conversation with our Participatory Journalism fellows. He spoke about press freedom, the ethical responsibilities of journalists, and the systemic pressures on investigative reporting. From his own experiences facing surveillance and legal battles, to the critical role of mentorship and accountability in journalism, Trevor highlighted the evolving challenges in the field. His insights served as both a wake-up call and a reminder of the values that define great journalism - integrity, trust, and resilience. An inspiring and thought-provoking discussion. @clodagh_traynor @BrianPelan @Tommy___Greene @lukejbutterly @ShaunaReports @PatrickCorrigan

Powerful panel on lived experience. 'One of the worst things about racism is making young black people feel they can’t achieve anything. Racism isn’t just slurs and violence it’s deeply ingrained in the system' - Angel Arutura @CFNIreland @NICVA

So much in our first session this morning. A sobering insight on the failure of government in NI to address racist intimidation. It was also useful to surface the role the media plays in exacerbating racism. We only just touched on the role of leadership or lack of it. Lots to think about – thanks, everyone, for a really thought-provoking start. @NICVA @CFNIreland

First panel today: UK/NI Policy Context. Dr. Nazia Latif highlights NI’s deeply rooted racism problem - policy change is too slow. 'Human rights without effective rule of law are just slogans.' We need firm government commitment to real action. #BuildingSolidarity
