“When Oklahoma State needed a QB to beat Oklahoma for the last time, they didn’t go with a high school recruit or even the coach’s son, they went with a former Texas Tech quarterback.” - Kent Hance (probably)
The recruiting dynamic in college football is changing.
More and more of the best players are looking away from Alabama and are looking at what’s building in Lubbock.
Texas Tech's last missed shot came at the 5 minute mark of the second half. Made all six of its shots down the stretch. Also did not commit a turnover for the final nine minutes. That's how you win basketball games.
I do not say this lightly, yet I believe it wholeheartedly: Hawkins would be the best true point guard to come through this program since John Roberson.
Adding him to this roster would drastically increase my expectations for this season. Ceiling-raiser.
Texas Tech players who have scored 27 or more points in a game since 2017:
• Keenan Evans (x6)
• Jarrett Culver (x3)
• Jahmi’us Ramsey (v. LIU)
• Mac McClung (@ WVU)
• Bryson Williams (@ KU)
Jaylon Tyson joined the list with 27 points at WVU today. Impressive company.
Big 12 players since 1992 who have averaged 13+ points per game and 8+ rebounds per game while shooting 45%+ from three (>40 3PA) in conference play:
Darrion Williams
That’s literally it, and D5 shot 52.3% from deep in conference play.
Tahj Brooks in his last two games:
44 rushes
307 yards
153.5 yards per game
6.98 yards per rush
If Texas Tech is going to turn around a 1-3 start, getting him the ball early and often is non-negotiable.
Feels like a good time to show some love to Darby Rich.
A guy who embraced every aspect of his role and worked tirelessly behind the scenes. He gave it his all in Lubbock, and the Red Raiders were better because of him. 👆🏻
NEWS: FAU big man Vlad Goldin is entering the transfer portal, per source.
Goldin just wrapped up his third season at FAU after playing his freshman season at Texas Tech. A native of Nalchick, Russia.
He average 15.7PPG, 6.9RPG and 1.6BPG this season.
BREAKING: Minnesota transfer guard Elijah Hawkins has committed to Texas Tech, he tells

. Was also looking at Kentucky.
The 5-11 junior averaged 9.5 points and 7.5 assists per game this season.
Grant McCasland and his group are proving to be quite the resilient bunch. Doesn’t matter how far out of a game they may look, there always seem to be an adjustment that puts them in a position to win. They really wanted that one after falling to Houston.

Added that the "raucous crowd" made a difference in the game.
In the final 10 minutes of Big 12 games so far this season, Texas Tech is +52 in net points scored over opponents.
Red Raiders are playing some of their best basketball when the stakes are the highest and the lights are the brightest.
How large is Texas Tech? Extremely! According to our research, Texas Tech sits on 1,839 acres, has over 40,000 in student enrollment, and over 2,500 faculty. Texas Tech is the second largest contiguous campus in the nation.

Texas Tech is one of the best jobs in the country.
Elite home court advantage, NBA-level facilities, proven track record of competing at the highest level.
This job will be desired and there is no reason to settle on this next hire.

Tahj Brooks over his last 5 games:
82 rushes
548 rushing yards
6.7 yards per carry
3 TDs
I keep waiting for these to get less insane and they haven’t. Texas Tech has an elite running back in the backfield.
Tech's offensive rating was 147 when Washington was on the floor, highest of any player who played more than 20 minutes in this game. He also did not miss a single shot attempt, even when the offensive was relying on him.
Statement game against a team with as much size as Texas.
Power Conference players who had a 38%+ assist rate with a turnover rate below 24% last season (1000+ minutes played):
- Reece Beekman, Virginia
- Jamal Shead, Houston
- Tyler Kolek, Marquette
- Braden Smith, Purdue
- Elijah Hawkins, Minnesota
Texas Tech just got an elite PG.
Final: Texas Tech 89, Texas A&M 84
Pop Isaacs scores 30 points to lead the Red Raiders to a victory. This Red Raider team is deep, has multiple shooters and plays good defense.
Watch out.
Per KenPom, Texas Tech is now ranked:
27th overall (7th in Big 12)
41st in Offensive Efficiency (7th in Big 12)
35th in Defensive Efficiency (8th in Big 12)
Texas Tech’s chances at making the tournament are at 5% this morning, per T-Rank.
If the Red Raiders win out, they’ll have an 89% probability at getting a bid and project as a 9 seed. Every game on the schedule other than @ Oklahoma is a Quad 1 game.
Grant McCasland’s offseason approach is good practice for watching his offense. Things may move slow, but everything is going to be purposeful, planned and deliberate. Things may not move at the pace you or I enjoy, but until the results prove him wrong, I’m trusting the process.
Before tonight, Robert Lewandowski's 9 shots were the most a Red Raider had taken in a game without missing since 2010.
Darrion Williams went a perfect 12-of-12 tonight, which I'm sure will live in the record books for a LONG time.
Warren Washington played 19 minutes and had 9 of his 11 points, as well as 7 of his 8 rebounds in the second half. He also made 5 of Tech's first 7 shots to start the half. Played his best basketball when it mattered most, even when he ran out of gas. Really impressive stuff.
Let’s try this again.
Barret Peery is a widely respected recruiter with great talent evaluation ability, who successfully implemented parts of the no-middle defense at UNLV this year and has one of the most dynamic offensive schemes available.
If he’s getting calls, that’s why.

OC Eric Bieniemy have mutual interest and it’s trending in the right direction toward him being their new coordinator. Both sides are working through specifics, but Bieniemy is the top choice. If all goes well, this should be official today.
Texas Tech’s defensive front four had the game of their lives yesterday.
Baylor had 17 rushing yards on 30 attempts. Steve Linton had three sacks on the game, Charles Esters had two. If this defense can consistently continue to stop the run and pressure the QB, watch out.
Who's played the most minutes for Texas Tech in conference play? 7-footer Warren Washington.
Played all but 3 minutes against BYU in a 19 point, 9 rebound, 2 STOCK (STL + BLK) performance. Incredibly impressive at his position to be playing at this level while playing so much.
Darrion Williams in Big 12 play so far:
12.6 PPG
7.9 RPG (2nd in Big 12)
2.6 APG
49.6 FG%
20-of-40 3PA
91.1 FT%
7.1 BPM, 5.0 OBPM (1st on team), 2.1 DPBM
Reigning MWC Freshman of the Year is playing even better in the nation's best league. Deserves to be an All-Big 12 guy.
A huge key to Texas Tech’s success running ball small ball has been Jaylon Tyson’s elite rebounding ability as a wing.
Tyson is rebounding 12.8% of all shots in conference play, which leads the Red Raiders and is the third-most by any player (350+ minutes) in the Big 12.
Fascinating 20 minutes of basketball from Tech. A team that’s played it’s best offense from the perimeter just camped out down low and utilized Joe Toussaint when necessary. This team adapts to whatever will generate the highest quality shot and it worked that first half.
In 2019, Texas Tech had the 65th overall recruiting class (247). The 2 highest rated recruits in that class haven’t played a game snap yet.
Texas Tech currently has the 20th overall 2024 recruiting class (247) and is trending in the right direction to land its best recruit ever.

Oklahoma State — at home — against Grant McCasland’s defense in the first half:
8-of-26 (31%) from the field
1-of-11 (9%) from three
6 turnovers
-4 in rebounds
17 points
That’ll play.
Darrion Williams is one of only 14 college basketball freshmen since 2017 who have averaged 7+ points, 7+ rebounds and 2+ assists per game. That list also includes:

Pop Isaacs scored 290 points in Big 12 play this season, matching Bryson Williams for the 4th most points scored by a Red Raider in a conference season since 2010.
Only Jarrett Culver (317 in 2018-19) and Keenan Evans (304 in 2016-17, 293 in 2017-18) scored more in Big 12 play.
I will proudly back Grant McCasland if he’s the guy. But he’s ranked in the top-100 of KenPom’s Offensive Efficiency in only 2 of his 7 years coaching. His offensive pace has ranked 350th or worse the last 4 years. Offense has been a problem for this program and that worries me.
I wouldn’t call this offseason a sure-fire win, but Texas Tech ditching a mentally checked out coach who treated players poorly and hiring a postseason tournament champion HC from last season, while retaining an all-B12 caliber point guard, sure as hell ain’t a loss.
Tahj Brooks is currently No. 10 in total rushing yards this season among all FBS players.
With 84 carries in the first five games of 2023, he’s only 168 yards away from matching his rushing total from all of last season.
Last season, Kevin Overton had a lower turnover rate than any other freshman who has played 1000+ minutes in a season since 2007-08 (553 players).
His 18 turnovers were the 3rd fewest among all players who logged 1000+ minutes in 2023-24. The two ahead of him were seniors.
Texas Tech has thrown for 1,427 more yards than Texas the past two seasons despite countless injuries, less on-paper talent at OL + WR, and one of the seasons being led by Matt Wells.
Hard to be anything but bullish on the future of the Lady Raiders with Krista Gerlich at the helm.
The program is coming off the first 20 win season since 2013 and is landing some A-class recruits this cycle. Tournament appearance next year?
I believe!
When the L A Lakers needed a coach to get them to the NBA Western Conference finals they didn’t get a Kansas, Duke or Kentucky grad. Nope, they got Darvin Ham a Texas Tech grad!!
Kerwin Walton currently has a 75.1% true shooting percentage -- which factors in two-point, three-point and free throw shots.
That's 1st in the Big 12 and 6th nationally among players who have taken 50+ shots.
I have never seen anything quite like this start.
Texas Tech is 8-0 this season in games where Kerwin Walton has played 10 or more minutes.
The team is 3-2 in games where he's played fewer than 10 minutes.
Being upset by the quality of football last night does not make you a worse fan.
Ignoring the quality of football last night and yelling at others who are upset by it does not make you a better fan.
Enjoy your day off tomorrow.
