.
Final draft: THC edibles and beverages are legal in Minnesota starting tomorrow. A key Republican in the Republican-controlled Senate said he didn’t realize the scope of the law he signed off on, calls for it to be rolled back. Democratic leader says no.
Under the approved resolution, Minneapolis Public Schools will cease further negotiations with the police department and Superintendent Ed Graff must come up with a new plan for school safety by the board's August 18 board meeting.
Also meant to note: Minneapolis Public Schools was paying the police department $1.1 million per year for services. Students and school board members say that money could be better spent on mental health services.
The district has long faced criticism over the use of SROs, and sought to transform the role into a mentor. In 2018-2019, a Minneapolis schools survey gave mostly positive marks to SROs, but data also showed school cops had more interactions with black students than their peers.
"I value people and education and life," school board chairwoman Kim Ellison said in an interview. "Now I'm convinced, based on the actions of the Minneapolis Police Department, that we don't have the same values."

NEW: Republican Sen. Jim Abeler, who chairs the MN Senate human services reform committee, tells me he did not realize the new MN law allowing THC edibles would do just that. He thought it would just regulate delta-8 THC products, said the Legislature should roll the new law back

New: Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Thursday endorsed Democrat Don Samuels' primary election bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, backing the congresswoman's challenger after she supported his mayoral opponents last year.
Republicans would likely need to win the trifecta -- control of the House, Senate and governor's office -- in November to do that. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz supports full recreational marijuana legalization and is unlikely to sign a bill undoing a lite version of it.
At least several hundred people have filled the streets outside Cup Foods in Minneapolis to protest the in-custody death of George Floyd. March starting now.
Abeler's statement, and the no-comment from Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller, suggests that the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate's approval of a new law legalizing THC edibles was likely an accident.

Just deleted tweet about my car being hit with “live rounds.” Don’t want folks using it to push misinfo. Brain was foggy as I tweeted, meant to say it was a marker round. Regardless, the window completely shattered inward. Left me with cut on left brow and cuts on arm.
Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, a nationally known progressive, told me today she thinks these types of comments aren't productive. "I actually don't think it's helpful for us to be out talking about change in leadership" as Dems fight to maintain control of the U.S. House and Senate.

Who exactly is in charge of the city and state response tonight? So far, it isn't clear where the Fire Department is. It isn't clear where the police are. And it definitely isn't clear where the National Guard is.

Lots of wishful comments from Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. But no clear plan of action detailed for how they will stop riots in the coming days, other than saying they are doing everything they can.
A couple hundred people or so have gathered outside the Minneapolis Public Schools headquarters urging the district to terminate its contract with Minneapolis police. The school board will vote on this action tonight.

NEW from me: Students at the University of Minnesota Morris, which was built on the site of a former American Indian boarding school, are demanding the campus be searched for possible unmarked graves.
My colleague,

, on how police treated him last night, despite being a member of the press, who are exempt from the 8 p.m. curfew. He showed them his badge, too.
Regarding police behavior last night, I was twice ordered at gunpoint by Minneapolis police to hit the ground, warned that if I moved "an inch" I'd be shot. This after being teargassed and hit in groin area by rubber bullet. Waiving a Star Tribune press badge made no difference.
Ten minutes from curfew and the streets of downtown Minneapolis are completely empty. This was at an intersection on Hennepin, right by the Minneapolis police 1st Precinct, which is heavily fortified.
UPDATE: WE FOUND HIM. Thankfully he was able to find his way to the downtown Target and buy a charger. He called us 10 minutes ago and we just picked him up.
Developing: It's unclear if leaders in the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate knew this law would legalize THC edibles before passing it. Sen. Michelle Benson said she knew it would. But she said her and Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller "did not discuss that specifically"
