I am relieved that the Governor, and others working and visiting the Capitol, were physically unhurt. I am dismayed that we recently doubled down on our system of cash bail which allows this and jails people pre-trial on charges based not on risk to the public but access to cash.

Returning part of the exorbitant fees from our regressive sales tax is good policy. But it’s a poor excuse to pick Milwaukee’s pockets to pay to subsidize a billionaire stadium which puts private wealth over public interests. We deserve a better deal.

Sometimes our work isn’t immediate. Breaking up a monopoly, ending price gouging, and providing free calling has taken years of organizing from stakeholders and advocates. Undoing the larger harm of privatization and the carceral system will take more.

was beating the child. We need transparency, not a release of heavily edited footage. Treating someone picking up a family member as a criminal, asking the same question to the point where anyone would be frustrated and then escalating to violence should not be acceptable.

August’s (covered up) occupation of a library in the jail was peaceful until it was escalated with pepper spray and beatings. We’ll be able to hear more when we hear a revised report from the @MilwCoSheriff which finally addresses the horrific conditions.

half of these overtime dollars are going to the jail. Overtime hours are not just inefficient: they’re dangerous. The data is clear that - in every profession - performance suffers when people work too many consecutive hours. For COs and Deputies, those mistakes can be deadly.
