Enjoying how salty Martin Brundle’s grid walk is today:
“Tom Cruise is here although I’ve been told I’m not allowed to talk to him…”
“Lots of famous people here… and lots of people who think they’re famous”
*unleashes Jackie Stewart on Roger Federer*
On 1 Jan, I officially start my new role as Senior Programmer at
@showroomcinema
. In the first seven days we have screenings of Jeanne Dielman…, Vertigo, Citizen Kane, Tokyo Story, 2001: A Space Odyssey, a repeat screening of On the Manor with

V. pleased to see a 21.44% increase in admits & a 25.35% increase in BO gross during my first year as programme manager at Showroom. A testament to the hard work of everyone in the team during a turbulent year. Let's hope it continues so we can get indie cinema back to LIFE.
Happy to finally unveil the season that I've been dropping hints about OUR CINEMA COULD BE YOUR LIFE, inspired by the bands of 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' and writing of

I’ll write a review for Roadhouse (2024) tomorrow, but it must be said:
Not since Tommy Wiseau in The Room has there been an actor worse suited for the job than Conor McGregor, yet he’s one of the very best parts of the movie. Just a big dumb idiot with absurd ADR. It’s awesome.
Been in Sheffield for 20 years this month, pre-phone camera. I did a bit of digging and think this is the earliest photo I have, of course it is outside Showroom. I have an R.E.M. tour jacket on from that year and an Evil Dead record bag to affirm dweeb status.
As much as the demands of my job fold me like origami sometimes, getting to play Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, The Barefoot Contessa and The Prince and the Showgirl in a cinema simply because I adore Jack Cardiff's work is truly worth it (on in December).
Friends, I have launched a crowdfunding campaign with the intention of acquiring, preserving and presenting two orphan films I believe to be 'lost'.
Please give a bob or two if you like that sort of thing:
Putting together my final 'Food on Film' lecture today, a lovely end of season celebration of food as spectacle & comfort.
What's your favourite shot/scene of food in a film?
People keep asking me if Killers of the Flower Moon is worth seeing in the cinema and I have to remind them that I had to have actual physiotherapy from clapping so hard for it in a rare moment as a quiet person of “losing my shit”
TOMORROW: Kicking off the
@showroomcinema
Powell and Pressburger season with a one-off screening of CONTRABAND from 35mm with an extended season intro from
@AndrewMoor1
🎉
Incredible buzz for tonight’s Escapes screening of KNEECAP at
@showroomcinema
- record number of sign ups and a packed screen 3 ready to enjoy tonight’s preview 🎉
I'd love to know if anyone considers the inconvenient truth that releasing a film to VOD before it has enjoyed worldwide theatrical distribution/before the theatrical windows have ended means that it will be instantaneously and globally available on the internet, killing theatres
In September we undertook a survey of theatrical exhibitors to gather evidence on the current financial health of the sector.
We have now published the findings, which show that nearly half of venues forecast operating at a loss this financial year:
Would love to write a piece on the recent anti-cinema propaganda of the media. Our target for admissions has been hit again for September with films being moved, a heatwave, a projector being broken for a week and none of the films of previous months that have "saved cinema"...
Lovely bit of promo from
@ArrowFilmsVideo
for our upcoming Bruce Lee season in July - Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, Game of Death and The Big Boss all back on the big screen with new restorations (Enter the Dragon to follow in August with
@ParkCircusFilms
🎉)
Feeling very lucky to have received funding (and saved up and self-funded other bits) for a period of work events. If you're at them, it would be nice to meet as I'll be flying solo at some:
- Cannes (all)
- BFI Film on Film festival (9-11 June)
- Sheffield DocFest (all)
Johnny Depp and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have a “genuine connection”—so much so that insiders say Depp is now weighing a seven-figure annual contract to promote Saudi Arabia’s cultural renaissance.
Every year around my birthday I treat myself to one film related self-gift and this year I hit jackpot with a find of the 1995 Swatch set with three watches designed by Almodovar, Altman and Kurosawa
Absolutely unbelievable scenes as
@sheffhorrorfest
bring GHOSTWATCH to Sheffield in an immersive screening. Been obsessed with it since I saw it as a kid in ‘92 and almost died of fright, I’ve been absolutely dying for this screening for 30 yrs 👏
This came up on my timeline and it’s very funny to see all the “IT WAS BETTER IN THE OLD DAYS” comments from people not realising it’s a chocolate commercial from 2014 with a CGI Audrey Hepburn, a modern tech hellscape
A private test screening of the 35mm print for AFTER HOURS ahead of its public screening on Friday
@showroomcinema
. Thanks to projection and our young programmers for unintentionally giving me a day early little birthday treat of seeing a film by my idol in blissful solitude ✌️
I, like you, would love I SAW THE TV GLOW to have an international theatrical release but I found out this week it’s not currently planned... Sony controls the film internationally so maybe let them know if you want to see it on the big screen?
Looking forward to finally revealing the Sheffield Film Festival line up on Friday - hopefully something for everyone and so, so many partners involved - producers, filmmakers, festivals, local partners, community groups, musicians, and more…
40 years later it still hits very hard. A sold out screen 4 crowd stunned into silence at the finale, but expertly picked back up by our wonderful and insightful panel
@DavidSForrest
@sheffhorrorfest
@dylanbd54
and Professor Sue Vice
It’s the big morning at
@showroomcinema
- a sold out performance of Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers with live score. The final rehearsal with
@unitebrassband
sounds incredible and all our teams have been gripped by Feathers Fever. It’s gonna be a cracking morning 🧀
Excellent evening of BUG at
@showroomcinema
- cannot tell you how happy I am to have Chris Cunningham videos blasting in our biggest screen with hilarious YouTube responses from Adam Buxton, truly momentous
A very nervy, stressy 30 mins later and I have 12 films booked for the inaugural BFI Film on Film Festival - Nitrate! 70mm! Louisiana Story! Technicolor dye-transfer print of The Swimmer! Lots of stuff I've never seen!
Going for a lie down
I put this Dinosaur Jr. T shirt on Vinted today and it sold in less than a minute and maybe I underestimated the cultural value of that time I wore it on the BBC and got called a stoner on Twitter
Great start to the day with a little preview of the new 4K restoration of Raging Bull. Looks astonishing and will be playing
@showroomcinema
in April 🥊
Seems unfair that in the 6th biggest city we have a cinema not far off the size of BFI Southbank but with a tiny proportion of the resource and still have to send non-stop begging letters
Seems unfair that Michael Jordan can play one game of basketball with flu and his shoes sell for over $1mill but when I'm doing funding applications at 4am with flu I don't even get any cool Nikes in the first place.
Not only are we playing SHOWING UP but we waited so we could play a reverse retrospective of Kelly Reichardt’s collabs with Michelle Williams, one of cinema’s truly great duos
A special edition of my Film on Food film studies course as we looked at the art of cooking on film and Big Night. Treated the class to Italian wine, Cannolis from Caffe Tucci and authentic Neapolitan pizza from Napoli Centro as we watched Stanley Tucci talk food in Naples 🤌🤌🤌
Incredible work from
@sheffhorrorfest
- Razorback, Gremlins 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Suspiria all on 35mm yesterday. Such dedication and commitment to what they do, and always inspiring to work with programmers who will literally go miles to get prints and make this happen
Wonderful to finally visit the beautifully refurbished
@HydeParkPH
yesterday and get a tour, was already my fave UK cinema and love everything they’ve done
Unbelievable shitshow trying to book tickets for the Martin Scorsese screen talk - tickets for Row B in basket, kicked out - spinning wheel of death, finally got something in balcony - better than nothing I guess
Great work from

When I was about 14/15 my granddad walked in the room as I was watching ‘A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies’ for the first time and said, “are you watching this for fun?!” and I said yes and he just nodded and then watched it with me.
Lovely to see the Powell and Pressburger season at
@bfi
going on sale, we’ve got big plans for it
@showroomcinema
and hope we can finally reveal them soon too!
.
@sheffdocfest
bring a special 10th anniversary screening of their 2014 opening night film PULP: A FILM ABOUT LIFE, DEATH & SUPERMARKETS to the festival. A celebration of Sheffield's most beloved band and 30 years of DocFest!
Happy to finally reveal that we’ll be rolling out VR at

with
@StoryFutures

It’s a wee bit raggedy from transit but managed to get the poster from attending the Ghibli honorary Palme D’or ceremony up in the office ready for My Neighour Totoro playing from today 💥
Babak Jalali’s Fremont is a poetic, Jarmuschian about work, love and identity that’s shot in gorgeous black and white.
It’s released in the UK today by our friends at

Happy to finally reveal one of my seasons for August - a collaboration with AGFA
@filmarchive
- five films from the American Genre Film Archive, including a free screening of Joe Dante's legendary The Movie Orgy:
Sheffield Film Festival is live! ICYMI, a director's cut thread from me on the programme:
A
@WarpFilms
retrospective runs throughout August, marking 20 years since the visionary film and television production company released their debut feature DEAD MAN'S SHOES.
Next Friday's opening night screening of THREADS has only around 30 seats left (that's over 500 ppl in two screenings!), and there's also a free afterparty so you can dance like it's your last day on Earth 🎉
TEEN AGE RIOT is on Saturday and DJ Mascis - who is definitely not me, a serious professional - will be one of the hosts playing lots of Kool Things. Free entry, Showroom bar, 8-late.
It’s a despicable and gut-wrenching situation to see wide academic redundancies in Sheffield, and a huge loss for the city and its culture to again see film and humanities treated as irrelevant and not of tangible worth by bureaucrats without an ounce of creativity in their bones
A very special morning with
@unitebrassband
rehearsing for next week’s Sheffield Film Festival screening of The Wrong Trousers at
@showroomcinema
- moved me to tears for many reasons and can’t wait to see it again with a full audience next week!
Took a sneaky little pic as late as possible of sold out Barbie tonight - a totally full screen full of people *loving* the atmosphere and film itself, a joyous evening
We are incredibly pleased to feature ‘Do the Right Thing’ by
@tameks_g
as our beautiful lead artwork for Black History Month at

Our Young Programmers played a the King of Comedy (👏) and of course we’re taking on The Age of Innocence this month and Raging Bull next - but justice for New York, New York when?
I've made no secret of wanting to introduce more rep programming since joining Showroom and here's every film we've played to date in 2023. (Not including the Wes Anderson/Bruce Lee seasons listed separately)
BIG NEWS: Oppenheimer coming to
