Growing up a liberal protestant I would look at really beautiful churches and think "why wasn't the money spent on this given to the poor." After being orthodox for 5 years I just realized who I was quoting.
Visited another orthodox church today. Is it just me, or does every decent loving orthodox parish have at least one person who is obviously not mentally capable of much but everyone just loves them anyway? I believe it is a gift from God to a parish.
As it appears to me.
Fr Peter H: unless certain unlikely presuppositions are met baptize a convert. If already received by chrismation that's on the bishop, you're orthodox.
OrthoKarens: how dare he say I'm not orthodox!
@Hleowstede
I'ts a form of prelest to think you are so advanced spiritually you need an Athos Elder upon your conversion. Obedience to your parish priest is enough for the vast majority of us. God will arrange something different if that is what is required for your salvation.
It is probably a sin on my part, but I cannot take Christians who believe in evolution seriously. Even old earth creationists lose 20 points automatically.
When venerating this icon it occurred to me that Christ went to the cross for His Father to redeem us. He went to the grave of His mother to retrieve her. His humanity overwhelmed me. I've been missing my mom who passed 5 years ago. I wish I could go get her. Lord keep her too.
Please pray for my dad. He’s in the hospital tonight for shortness of breath. He has congestive heart failure and already has had 9 stents. Hopefully a few more will help him breathe.
I generally follow everyone who says they are orthodox on their bio. But there have been a lot of Africans that when I follow them I immediately get the exact same message in my inbox. Bots. Is a shame because it would be nice to communicate with real orthodox Africans.
Orthodox only. Please repost.
I was baptized at age 7 in the Disciples of Christ denomination. I was baptized at age 25 in the Southern Baptist Convention denomination. I was baptized at age 55 in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
How baptisms have I had?
The Theotokis controversy is interesting. Prots will believe in the virgin birth, but not perpetual virginity. A lot will believe God created the universe, just not in 6 days, or that the apostles laid on hands to ordain bishops, just not the ones in the church today.
@PeasantQps
Then Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, one of his disciples, who would betray him, said, 5 “Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii,[a] and given to the poor?”
@lastdays2030
The irony for me is that after my conversion, I became far less right-wing. I became less any-wing. But I probably am the Right Wing Anglophone Konvertski she is afraid of.
@strong95604
I was wanting someone else to help the poor with their money, not me with mine. And also the not insignificant motive of feeling superior to people who built something to the glory of God, which I also didn't do.
I wonder if the lack of spontaneous prayer is one of the reasons men like orthodoxy. In the evangelical world it seems women will use prayer time when they get a captive audience to gossip, sermonize or both. Written prayers by saints limits that.
@jacfalcon
Thinking of a pan orthodox men's group that will swarm small parishes that desperately need a new temple and build one. Then move on to the next.
If I was a true jerk, the next time I'm in an orthodox church and the women aren't covering I would put on a ball cap. When the priest asked me to take it off I would explain that it seemed like head covering rules at their church had been suspended.
@consciousphilos
Life is meaningless. Therefore I am meaningless. But I mean something. So nihilism fails. There has to be meaning external to myself. That has to be outside the material world.
After that, for a while I realized if atheism is right there is no loss in living life as a christian
Blasphemous - as intended. Christians & their holidays should be treated with dignity & respect. That they are mocked, esp by something of this nature & in this way, is a sure sign that dark forces motivate everthing about this "movement" & this political leadership.
My understanding is that Fr Peter Heers was supposed to be in ROCOR but bureaucracy dropped the ball. Wouldn't a more effective path been for Archbishop Peter (my bishop) to receive FPH into his diocese and then deal with him directly? I'm not criticizing, just wondering.
@Meagan_Salia
@TexasMonthly
Thank you for writing this. It will scare wokedox away from ROCOR and signal to people who know journalistic corruption that this is the right church. A true service to the church.
@KalebOfAtlanta
@897kii
When I lived in Riyadh I liked the sound of the prayer calls and the beauty of some of the mosques. When I converted to Eastern Orthodox I realized everything I liked about Islam was swiped from the orthodox.
@MrsMagdaBeard
In some traditions children go to children's church then youth church. Their parents wonder why they thence leave the church. Fact is they were never in that church.
@Pilgrim2027
My fifth ortho birthday is coming up in April. We had one young man who was baptized with me and he ghosted a few months later. We prayed for his return and this last Holy Saturday he just popped up during a baptism and been getting back into parish life.
If people disappear,
My ROCOR parish needs to make YouTube video for non orthodox people thinking about visiting.
I am writing the script in a question and answer format to just have Fr just answer the questions.
What questions should be in it?
If you are not orthodox what would you want to know?
@CurmudgeonlyOpa
To be generous, Bojan is Serbian. Although Fr. Peter said they are all orthodox he said the Serbian Church is making a mistake by pouring. To be told your church is wrong has to ruffle some feathers. I love the Bible Illustrated stuff and Fr. Peter. Lord have mercy on us.
@FrGeorgedeIdaho
Could the exaltation and scarcity of bishops play a role? A priest is called on to answer all comers. He should be able to send challenging inquirers to his bishop. I’m in Texas and my bishop is in Chicago and I don’t feel worthy to call him up and chat.
I had originally wanted St Tsar Nicholas II as my Saint. Then I changed to St Jude. But today is my birthday and the feast day of the Royal Martyrs. Oh well.
@AgentAcht
The strange thing about it is that the book says the default is baptism unless some unlikely conditions are met. My bishop Peter (ROCOR) banned the book in a pastoral letter then reiterated the ROCOR position that we baptize all converts. Very confusing.
@ZubyMusic
A guy I was baptized with four years ago and who just disappeared shortly after showed up at church for pascha. I had been praying for his return for a long time.
I've been wondering if the protestant idea of the invisible church, i.e. everyone who believes in some set of propositions about God is a member of the church drives the idea of America being a propositional nation so that borders are wrong because anyone can be an American?
@jacfalcon
I liked him and read his 12 rules book. Then I realized he was a cargo cult. He wanted a Christian culture without Christ. I hope he makes the last step but until then I think he functions best as pipeline to Pageau.
@banterwithb
Your comic is like my protestant friends who point out that the thief on the cross was saved without being baptized or joining the church or $CURRENT_TOPIC.
I reply that should you find yourself crucified next to the incarnate creator of the universe and He says you are saved
@MedWhiteAcolyte
I forgot and wore my hat into the sanctuary to get a blessing from bishop Peter. He pulled the hat off my head and then blessed me. I was a catechumen at the time.
Orthodox only, please retweet.
What percentage of the congregation needs to be native English speakers before you should replace words like Matuska and Trapeza with English equivalents?
Everything that comes to me God brings for my salvation, I receive it with joy.
I repeat this often. It is more often aspirational than descriptive, but I say it anyway.
I think God's test in this current dustup is if can we be wrong in the right way. If you think you are right in the right way you already failed. You are wrong in some or all aspects of this kerfuffle. Assume you could be wrong and be gracious to those you disagree with.
@orthometalhead
In my catechism I was surprised that tee total was blasphemy. Jesus made and drank wine so posing as morally better than Jesus was at best, problematic.
