why does something so obviously false gets attention? Is this some "meet in the middle" fallacy? But, again, why would that be popular?
Liberals are people who would like to see things improved and conservatives are people who would like to see things not worsened, and anyone who does not have a little bit of both in their head does not have their head on right. — Daniel Patrick Moynihan

I mean, sure, the economy is a dynamic that fundamentally does NOT have human interests in mind (partly because it doesn't have a mind). But of all weird and questionable dynamics of human interaction and culture, voluntary interaction and its large-scale consequences are BENIGN. I suspect this is part of the reason of the bad reputation of free markets. Being benign includes not making up grandiose stories about deeper meaning like religions and nations do.
Spitballing here but I suspect the economy is already a form of alien intelligence that serves itself as a primary goal & survival of humans is secondary at best. And as it becomes more and more digitised it will be entirely taken over by agentic AIs who are better than any human at maximising their own capital (& thus power) in that environment, and humans will become diminishingly able to influence or extract value from that economy. So to survive in any meaningful way, we need to reinvent a more human-centric economy that capital maximising digital agents cannot speed-run & overtake.

@MilanMeck @emollick > In non-doom scenarios I could see adult life resembling that of high school ... if that's not a doom scenario, what is?

I want a backwards-incompatible refactoring of Unreal Engine based on C++23. Get rid of the UNREAL macros, cut down on OO over-engineering. Rebuild it with hot-reloading in mind lest you risk to loose your work at the press of a button. It's the most powerful tool for game development mankind has ever seen. It's also a complete mess and a pain in the neck and in the buttocks.

@HephaistosF To be honest, I'd rather have organ-harvested my parents at that age. The fact that we are still alive is evidence that there is a purpose within us - whether or not we are aware of it.

@defnotbeka i wonder what the value of 2.3% is supposed to mean, exactly. I would be more interested in the value of the expected closest approach distance and it's minimum and maximum value compatible with our current knowledge.

@poppermemes I used to wonder: if we live in a multiverse, how come I live in only one universe at any given time? But physics doesn't have any concept of the present, either. Ie, there is no such thing as "now", even though I only live right now.

@poppermemes @DavidDeutschOxf in "Beginning of infinity", Deutsch offers an explanation for the observed behavior of a single electron, based on a multi-verse of course. I don't understand all the nuances, but his explanation has immediate appeal ... much more than "wave-particle-dualism".
