The Club organised the first British Grand Prix at Silverstone 75 years ago this year. As part of our celebrations, this month there will be an array of Grand Prix cars in the rotunda. First off the grid is the 1963 Brabham BT7 – the bedrock of Brabham’s 1960s and 1970s success.

The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was described by Sir Stirling Moss as ‘probably the greatest sports car ever built by anybody any time.’ The legendary British driver won the 1955 Mille Miglia – on public roads – at an average speed of 98mph, a record that remains unbeaten today.

Klaus Müller was crowned winner of the 2023 HERO-ERA Cup in his 1965 Lancia Fulvia Coupé, awarded at the HERO-ERA awards tonight at the Club.

125 years ago today in 1897, the formal inauguration of the Automobile Club of Great Britain took place. The inaugural meeting started at 2.15pm at Number Four Whitehall Court, immediately after which there was a procession of ‘Pioneer Motor Cars’.

Dominating the rotunda is the legendary 1929 Bentley Speed Six 'Old Number One', in which Woolf Barnato won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1929 with Tim Birkin, and in 1930 with Glen Kidston - three of the heroic 'Bentley Boys.'

This 1947 Delahaye 136MS was the personal car of Grand Prix great Louis Chiron, its body custom-made by coachbuilder Henri Chapron of Paris. “Everything suits me,” said Chiron, who used it daily around Monaco. It looked fantastic in our Rotunda after a ground-up restoration.

The car currently residing in the rotunda is a Frazer-Nash-BMW 328 Special 1938. At the time of purchase in 1938 the car was a standard two-seater and cost £695 which was slightly more than the price of an average London semi-detached house.

This week in the rotunda is a Jaguar E-Type Series 1 coupe. An early production Series 1 is among the most desirable of Jaguar E-Types as they demonstrate the model in its purest form. And this particular chassis, 860010, could justly be described as ‘primus inter pares’.

The car in the rotunda this week is Shelby Cobra, Dragonsnake 1963. Certified by both the Antique Automobile Club of America and the SCCA, CSX 2093 is the most successful of the Dragonsnakes and a rare and original survivor with a long list of victories chalked up along the way.

This 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, owned by Club member Roy Allan, was awarded 'Best in Show' at the Club’s 2023 Midsummer Drive-In. Its younger brother was hand-built by the artisan Chris Leyshon-James, including the same ‘Shell over Tudor’ paintwork and red leather.
