Overnight shifts are an experience. The time is 1:37. I do 2 UWorld questions. It’s now 2:55. I get an intense craving for club crackers. I try to get through 1 OME video but stop when I can’t focus anymore. I sip some coffee to keep myself awake. I glance at the time. 2:57.

Got to touch a resected amygdala and hippocampus. Nailed my knot tying. Got to try my hand at closing with a running stitch. Today was a good day.

Finished my Internal Medicine rotations! Some highlights:
Saw legionella pneumonia! 💧
Assisted with a fecal disimpaction 😬
(Almost) placed an A-line
Sutured the A-line!
Found the apical heart view with an ultrasound
Suctioned a seizing pt
Placed an HD line
Onto surgery! 😷

Thrilled to say I was chosen for

Last weekend, I was at the AANS 2024 conference in Chicago, and it was amazing! Was 1 of 2 DO students to present at the Young Neurosurgeon Research Forum, met some friends and made new ones, and even made a quick sax cover in my down time!

Proud to say that I published my first clinical case series project as a med student (first-author too!). A special thanks to my mentors and co-authors for helping getting this project across the finish line!

Got to scrub in for a weekend night hernia repair that went past midnight, learned that the most expensive hernia mesh is $12,000+, had to put my finger in a belly button to move it out of the way, and came back at 7 for clinic. Surgery is bizarre and I couldn’t love it more.

Recently I presented my research project at the

meeting in Las Vegas. Another great experience, seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. A big thanks to my research mentors for their help with this project!

Also, I wasn’t sure at first if I’d see a lot on my geriatrics rotation, but I can technically say I’ve gotten more hands on experiences with wound care than my entire surgery block 🩹

Finished my peds rotation, and I think I’ve finally gotten somewhat decent at swaddling newborns, even though they keep sneaking their hands out like the little tricksters they are!!

I take it back, a 14-hour neurosurgery day followed by night call is insane. 20 hours slept and several cups of coffee later, my eyes still feel fuzzy 😴. 10/10, would go again.

My OB/GYN highlights:
- used a cystoscope and lapro graspers
- saw 8 deliveries and 8 c-sections
- scrubbed for an overnight urgent oophorectomy
- met a doc who saw TRAP sequence
- delivered placenta twice
- caught 2 babies (with help!) 👶
- found 13 fetal heart tones on u/s ❤️🫀
