@dylanwiliam @tomloveless99 It seems to me that all of those examples you gave come with a purpose beyond just memorizing at a low level or solving meaningless problems. Learning happens best (deep, connecting, lasting) when tied to a purpose. Preferably a purpose chosen by, or with input from, the learner.

@regieroutman Certainly. I might even go so far as to remove the words "science content". It's too bad their focus is on test scores, instead of students who are engaged, curious, and excited. And it's too bad they think that's the way to get teachers to click.

@openlibrary Hello. I love your site. I use it all the time in my classroom. One thing that slows me down when I look for books is never knowing if a book is actually available. Is there a way to sort, or set parameters, so that my results include only those books?

@plthomasEdD I think we start by defining "reading". We can't study effectiveness without that. Mine would start general: using sensory clues (what the reader notices) and schema to derive meaning. We read the weather, body language, print, etc. The more we know and notice, the better we read

@justinskycak I think there's sometimes resistance because we don't define what skills are "low level". Lots of learning needs to happen before even attempting to dribble. Far worse is that many teachers spend too much time teaching parts, without the guiding whole, to disinterested learners.

@plthomasEdD I could not agree more about the pseudoscience of reading (as I call it). Which makes me wonder if you've read the book by Thomas Sowell: Interview link: I was impressed. But I'm already a fan, so biased. Did he miss something?

@DTWillingham I don't see this as trivial, or semantics. Such statements from people so highly regarded are used to justify really bad, nonsensical, one-size-fits-all instruction. Do you see reading print as an individual attempt to gain meaning? Isn't the brain exquisitely suited for that?
