Upon his death in 1806, as a mark of respect for the interest he had shown, the formerly known Cockpen Tree (so called because its hollow trunk had been used to rear and keep fighting cocks) was re-named “the Major’s Oak” in Rooke’s honour.

Over the years, the statue became a target for souvenir hunters and there have been times when Robin looked particularly forlorn, with no arrow, no bowstring and sometimes only half a bow. In the 50s and 60s, replacement arrows were costing the City Council £55 a time! 1/2

Marvel Comic’s creator Stan Lee, was personally inspired by the Robin Hood legend & saw the 1938 Errol Flynn movie endless times as a boy. Robin’s principles later became the role model for many of his avenging comic strip characters
