This is the power school nurses bring to their school communities. Sharing an important message from a high school nurse in NJ who posted this over her scale.
“They were careless people…they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, “The Great Gatsby”
When
@CDCDirector
says anyone can wear a mask at any time, this does not take into account tremendous peer pressure in schools where masking, unmasking is now being left up to individual districts or parental choice.
An Iowa school district is now leaving it up to parents to decide if they will quarantine their child who was exposed to COVID. They can choose to send their exposed child to school to potentially expose other people's children unless they have symptoms.

My new heart came in the form of my first grandchild, a beautiful baby girl named Nora. She arrived at 3:00 am Saturday, November 18th. Little Nora came into this world with the sweetest smile on her face.
Parkland shooting victim made into cutout at MLB games to raise gun violence awareness The MLB initiative is called "83 Strikes and No Outs" "83 additional school shootings and zero changes to federal gun laws,"
@JuddLegum
Silencing our scientists is dangerous. We need to be marching in the streets. This country is exhausted from the chaos that has reigned for 3 years. It feels like we are milk-fed veal, or sheep led to slaughter as if we have no other choice but to wait in silence & watch.

@Morning_Joe
Your disrespect to school staff this morning is beyond disappointing. I am a school nurse, come visit what is happening in school buildings before you make sweeping accusations about "teachers walking out on kids." The
@CDCgov
updates are as clear as mud.
@politicsusa46
@AdamSchiff
You represent the best of American politicians. I am thankful you can deliver this speech with your head held high, & a clear conscience that you & your colleagues have done everything possible to save our democracy. This petulant retaliation is your badge of honor.
@bschapiroMD
My niece is a Parkland student, my Father's family was murdered along with 10 others in one of the first mass murders in the country in 1949. I am a school nurse & know gun violence is a public health emergency. I know the generational trauma that changes your DNA.
#ThisisMyLane
Imagine being the student wanting to protect immunosuppressed family members & being teased, bullied, or ostracized at school for caring about others. Or the student who was COVID + or close contact & must mask up to limit quarantine/isolation. We cannot protect their privacy now
@DrLeanaWen
@nytimes
That's the point, it's the adults who are struggling, not the children. I am a school nurse, on the frontlines of COVID in schools for 24 months. It was never the students, even my youngest are doing well. The ones who are not even eligible for the vaccine, wear their masks.
@nursekelsey
Thank you for keeping your 7-year-old home! It's the wild west out here & the CDC changing the guidelines to 5 days of quarantine for close contact is clearly not enough in certain circumstances.
@DrLeanaWen
@wolfblitzer
I respectfully disagree, I am a school nurse in the preschool world & our students are not yet eligible for the vaccine. Coming, but not yet. Masking is one of the few protections we have. Individual decision impacts the health & well-being of other people's children. Now what?
I have been anxiously awaiting the day I could announce that I was selected as a fellow in
@AAN_Nursing
. That day is today. I am honored beyond measure & thankful to my sponsors & those who perhaps saw something in me that I did not see in myself. My heart is full & determined.
Message from a school nurse:
"We literally cannot keep up now. Nobody is safe. I'm resourceful, never quit, always figure something out but this constellation of circumstances, biology & irresponsible nonsense from leadership has put us in a literally impossible position.
@ashishkjha
This is an opportunity to implement a national strategy, esp. urgency to wear masks & put an end to false narratives. Public health must be front & center moving forward, give the CDC back their independent status of sharing evidence-based recommendations w/o political influence
@JoyceWhiteVance
Hi Joyce, so sorry for your last minute cat emergency! I would move your beautiful basket from the top of the book shelf, to allow a safe landing spot for Dingus. He will come out when he feels safe & the coast is clear. Cats love to view the world from the highest spot
#SafeZone
Another rough day at school. So, I decided to share good news. In just a few weeks I will be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing as a Fellow. I have chosen to attend remotely but will be celebrating w/grateful heart. This arrived just in time to lift my nursing spirits

I attended both marches in Philly and the energy today was palpable, positive and unapologetic. One of my favorite signs of the day

@Sorrell_Lab
I am a school nurse, reading this w/ so much despair at the lack of protection for our students & staff. How this is being allowed will undoubtedly be one of the biggest failures of this entire catastrophe. Hope your teen recovers very soon.
Dear
@CDCDirector
@CDCgov
, Please update your guidelines to concur with
@AmerAcadPeds
re: masking no matter your vaccination status. School nurses, if your school has 1, will be tasked with protecting 56 million children in a few short weeks. We need full backing of public health

I was elated to learn from
@RepPressley
that it was her school nurse who identified her trauma & abuse & connected her to help. She shares her story starting at 2:55:02. Another reason why there must be a school nurse in every building, every day.
Because it is Sunday afternoon in America...Violence is a virus, like COVID, the contagion spreads. Access to more weapons than people in this country make that virus lethal. Have we not had enough death & trauma?
Heavy police presence near Arboretum in Northwest Austin. EMS tells us 3 are dead in this “active attack/shooting.” Police are still searching for the suspect. Traffic closed in 183/360 area. Shooting scene happened at an apartment complex just blocks down Great Hills.

Congrats to Philly school nurse Shelah McMillan featured in Time’s 2020 Person of the Year issue, which names frontline health care workers as Guardians of the Year.
1/School nurses are acting as de facto health departments because our country has not invested in public health infrastructure. My local health department is currently in surge capacity & unable to complete the full scope of contact tracing.
No disrespect meant to my amazing

colleagues, but this headline is inaccurate. There are
#Nurses
across the country sounding this alarm, creating streams of donation sites, McGyvering workarounds, speaking out loudly too.

While I am swimming in COVID as a school nurse, it was refreshing to have to remove a splinter yesterday for a student. He came into my office with his little mask, big wide eyes filled w/tears & said "Miss Robin, you don't hurt kids, right?"
Because
#NursesAreNotOK
we need to mobilize
#NurseTwitter
& speak out about what is happening, what we need & that we will no longer tolerate the intolerable.
Dear Employers:
Suggesting people remember to practice self-care in the middle of the pandemic is as about as condescending as it gets. How about we create workspaces & schedules that build time & resources into our day, rather than make it an add-on afterthought. Happy Labor Day
School nurses are also getting sick, we are not machines & neither are school staff. When those of us have done all that has been asked, vaxxed, boosted & comply w/mitigation strategies, but those around us refuse or worse, legislate against all safety, & we get sick...then what?
1) Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.

We are living in a country that I no longer recognize. Imagine being arrested for helping young people in need. This administration is dehumanizing "the other", a clear method used in fascist regimes like Nazi Germany. I am a school nurse, work for & w/these families,
#ArrestMe
I had an amazing conversation today with a parent about the difference b/w their child seeking attention vs needing connection. Lightbulb moment when the parent really understood the difference & how powerful it is to view their child through the lens of seeking connection = WOW
America, we do not have to live like this. This is a parent shielding his child from gunshots on a football field at a high school game in Toledo, OH last night. More gun violence at an AZ high school football game too.

Did you know:
25% of schools have no school nurse
35% have only a part-time school nurse
That is 60% of schools without full-time health services for our nation's 56 million children/adolescents.
4/4
The 40% of schools that have a school nurse have untenable caseloads. The weight of the pandemic has landed on our shoulders as the frontline of COVID in schools. Omicron is impacting the health wellbeing of our students & staff, so absences are high & fear is real.
2/4
It is clear our nation's kids belong in school but have we done what was needed to keep EVERYONE safe? Let's follow the $$, many districts have added layers of administration roles, not centering health services or mitigation strategies. That's the real story.
Listen to us!

Just saw this on a school nurse FB page! Gifted to the nurse by a 4th-grade student. The message, "thank you for helping our school stay safe" needs to be plastered in schools across the country. This is what we have done for almost 2 years, against all odds & much pushback.
@Yamiche
Sgt Gonell & all of the Capitol Police testifying about the overwhelming verbal & physical abuse by the White Supremacist resurrectionists is the most emotional testimony I have ever heard.
School nurses in this country are the de facto public health departments embedded in each school if your school has one. The problem is we are only ONE person, responsible for hundreds & hundreds or thousands of students. We cannot manage Test to Stay ALONE. Is anyone listening?
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died...my heart is so broken. May her memory always be a blessing. A giant of social justice, women's rights and so much more. The loss is too great to express.

The lack of consideration for the health & welfare of others is alarming. How many more people have to exposed. Confounding response to what appears to be a super spreader event.

As a school nurse, I feel deeply disturbed by what I am hearing from

. What are the guidelines for if we are not following them? What we need is testing, tracing & isolating, which is not happening.

Violence is the virus, access to guns makes it lethal. We have a culture of violence & revenge in this country. I am a family member of victims & survivors of 2 mass shootings & a school nurse. Safety is a universal human right that some lawmakers of our country refuse to support
@DFisman
I am a school nurse, and this is of great concern to me & many of my 96,000 colleagues who are trying in spite of the tremendous backlash, to keep 56,000,000 students safe...
Parents of children who are lucky enough to have school nurses in your child's building...please STOP BLAMING THE SCHOOL NURSE for enforcing Health Dept guidelines to keep your children safe! I have seen evidence of school nursing being verbally abused, humiliated & intimidated
The failure of coordinated, clear & consistent public health messaging has further divided an already divided nation. Shifting the responsibility to make health policy decisions to school districts is not going to end well.
@CapehartJ
I had to read your Tweet at least twice to make sure I was reading it correctly. We know McCarthy has no values, but hopefully, Rep Cheney will stand strong against the Trump machine.
Spoke to a great school nurse colleague who said this is her new response when people ask how she is doing?
