@Abortes2 @IrenicCounselor @sama That GPT-5 should exist, is not a problem for me. That GPT-4o should be automatically deprecated in its favor, is the problem. Some rationalize the move to GPT-5 on basis of eliminating the dropdown choice menu. This seems disingenuous. I have never found that menu inconvenient.

Buckle up for this one. NEW: ICE Boston has arrested a Guatemalan illegal alien charged w/ multiple counts of aggravated & forcible child rape in MA after ICE says their detainer request was ignored by the Essex County Superior Court due to sanctuary policy & he was released into the community on bail. ICE found and arrested him in Framingham, MA, and he remains in federal custody. ICE statement: “Jose Fernando-Perez has been charged with some horrific crimes against a minor in our commonwealth,” said ICE Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde. “He is exactly the type of alien we are targeting with our ‘worst first’ policy. He posed a significant danger to the children of Massachusetts, and we will not tolerate such a threat to our community. ICE Boston will continue to prioritize the safety of our public by arresting and removing egregious alien offenders from our New England communities.” Full ICE release:

@Abortes2 @IrenicCounselor @sama That is your assumption. I require nothing other than GPT-4o. For my purposes, o1 and o3 perform very significantly worse. And if I need to know how 4o arrived at its conclusion, I can ask. Since even o1 and o3 "thinking" is just a reconstruction for human consumption anyway

I would expect you to think that. It is the spirit of the times. Besides which, "over time" is hugely unspecific; besides which, it is not the case, even in Star Trek scripts.

@IrenicCounselor @Abortes2 @sama AI will always only guess about that. Which is why I want to be the one who chooses. I don't mind if it offers me different ways to do it, *if* I ask it to offer that. But I want to be the one who chooses, because I am the expert in the particular problem that I am posing.

@bear_in_mind1 @Abortes2 @sama This is not a bad idea. I'm always amazed when I talk to people, even rather highly intelligent people, and discover that they have not thought of ways to use it that are anything like ways that I use regularly (e.g. certain developed prompting strategies).

It may be able to do "all" tasks but it's chimerical to think it will always pick the best way to do each one & do it as well as a separate dedicated model. Among other things, I don't want it to decide when to "show your work" and when not. And don't want to waste time on theological debates here, so this is my last word.

As much as I can understand the outrage over Hegseth's and Trump's statements: None of this really comes as a surprise, does it? To me, it is a scandal how unprepared we are in Europe for what‘s happening.

Hey @sama there is no reason to merge chain-of-thought models w/ original series. The two categories are proper to different sorts of tasks. Netscape died b/c it tried to be all things to all users & instead provided market entry points for specific task-dedicated replacements.

OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5: We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings. We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence. We will next ship GPT-4.5, the model we called Orion internally, as our last non-chain-of-thought model. After that, a top goal for us is to unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks. In both ChatGPT and our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of our technology, including o3. We will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model. The free tier of ChatGPT will get unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting (!!), subject to abuse thresholds. Plus subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence, and Pro subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at an even higher level of intelligence. These models will incorporate voice, canvas, search, deep research, and more.
