@ArmandDAngour Would you be even slightly surprised to see people replying to that with 'she's pronouncing it all wrong'? I fear the usual suspects will be rounding themselves up even as I write.

@theo_nash I was confused about 'first common ancestor' rather than 'last common ancestor' - but I guess you mean first as we look back in time, so 'most recent'.

@theo_nash @OlaWikander It's fine only to know your own discipline (life is short, and all that). But maybe not contemptuously dismissing the entirety of more than one other discipline because they suggest different conclusions about some historical investigation would be sensible.

@theo_nash I think that the lesson here for all of us is that archaeologists know better than historical linguists or geneticists do about their own disciplines.

@PhiloCrocodile @Paracelsus1092 I think I see a hint of "everybody who doesn't agree with me about everything is a fascist" in some of the recent 'discussion' about IE and ancient genetics. If there isn't a culture war available, one can always be manufactured.

@Hieraaetus In the physical sciences it's generally accepted that the universe has no obligation to comply with our philosophical preferences. It's a strange attitude that saying 'some people did terrible things a long time ago' is somehow giving aid and comfort to a contemporary enemy.
