"Rickwood Field must be Heaven."
Today the eyes of the world return to Rickwood. Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Willie Mays, but we know he'll always be right here where he started...at Rickwood Field.

Baseball legend Willie Mays was a seventeen-year old high school student when manager Piper Davis penciled in his name on a Birmingham Black Barons lineup card for the first time.
William Greason was member of the Birmingham Black Barons from 1948-1951, and became the first black pitcher to take the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954.
Hank Aaron under the unmistakable lights at Rickwood Field. Hank played at the park many times and was also the special honoree of Rickwood's 75th Anniversary in 1985.
Great article by

How the
@MLB

@RickwoodField
and what it means for Birmingham. Read more in Charles Vaughan's interview with Rickwood's Gerald Watkins and Samford's Dr. Darrin White:
Rickwood has been home to baseball royalty on the field, but America's Oldest Baseball Park has also seen its fair share of celebrities in the stands. Here is Alabama's Bear Bryant catching a game in 1981.
T.H. Hayes purchased the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League in December 1939 and owned the team until 1952. He is pictured here in 1940 with the Birmingham Black Barons team bus outside of

Don't forget the first annual Tennessee Vintage Base Ball games at Rickwood Field.
There will be a double header, a baseball card show, book signing by baseball authors, period music in between innings, drinks and snacks will be available. A fun time for the whole family!

That's Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Built in 1910, Rickwood regularly hosted major league teams on their way north from spring training.
Happy 71st Birthday to the one and only Vida Blue! In '71, Vida was 24-8 with a 1.82 ERA, won the AL Cy Young and MVP awards, and was on the cover of Time. He won three World Series titles with the A's and became the first pitcher to start the All-Star Game for both leagues.
Rickwood Field and Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ are two of the remaining parks that ever hosted Negro League baseball. Perhaps, we'll see the revivial of Hamtramck Stadium, just outside Detroit....
The Birmingham Barons just announced Lou Piniella as this year's special guest for the 23rd annual Rickwood Classic. The Classic is scheduled for May 29 at 12:30 p.m., and the Barons remember the 1910 Birmingham Coal Barons.
The Friends of Rickwood were saddened to learn of the death of former Barons owner Art Clarkson. Art was a sports legend who saved pro baseball in Birmingham.

It's a shame they cut off statistics in 1948. Mays also played for the Black Barons in 1949 and part of the 1950 season. There was not much different between those squads and the '48 crew.
There are just 5 days left until the 22nd annual Rickwood Classic (Wed, May 30, 2018 at 12:30 p.m.). We couldn't settle on one number 5, so we chose Bench, Brooks, Brett & DiMaggio.
