Thrilled to share our latest study in the #1 journal in surgery, @JAMASurgery! Under the invaluable guidance of @DrDavidLarson at @MayoClinic, we integrated the tumor deposit count - often underestimated - in the TNM staging, revealing a better OS/DFS prognostication Read here!👇
Sassun-Mayo N/tumor, lymph node, and metastasis staging provided superior overall survival stratification vs the current @AJCCancer staging, suggesting that their implementation could improve prognostication in colon cancer.

Neoadjuvant immunotherapy versus adjuvant chemotherapy in anorectal melanoma ➡️ Kaplan–Meier analysis of the local surgery cohort revealed that the 3-year overall survival was comparable with neoadjuvant immunotherapy (65%) and adjuvant chemotherapy (45%) (P = 0.179) Conversely, in the radical surgery group neoadjuvant immunotherapy substantially increased 3-year overall survival (75% versus 8.3%, HR = 0.16, 95% c.i.: 0.04 to 0.58, P = 0.002) This finding uniquely suggests that a strategy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy plus radical surgery could significantly improve the 3-year overall survival Work by Richard Sassun, Annaclara Sileo, Jyi Cheng Ng, Tommaso Violante, Ibrahim A Gomaa, Matthew S Block, William R G Perry, Nicholas P McKenna, Kristen K Rumer, David W Larson #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery @RCPSGTrainees @aecirujanos @SEIQuirurgica @iss_sic #MedicalTechniques @BJSAcademy @young_bjs @BJSOpen @des_winter @evanscolorectal @robhinchliffe1 @bplwijn @MalinASund @nfmkok @TejedorPat @paulo_sutt @PVaughanShaw @JJEarnshaw @juliomayol @ksoreide #colorectalsurgery #StepUp4CRC @FightCRC @ACPGBI #ERAS @dice_europe #Crohn #proctology @Dukes_Club @ACPGBI_EduTrain @AECP_FAECP @PelvExGroup @escp_tweets @YouESCP #TeachMeColoproctology #Some4COLoprocto

@SochorovaDana @AnnaclaraS65 @JyiChengNg @tommyv1992 @DrDavidLarson @BJSurgery Great question! Unfortunately, only few are diagnosed in an early phase (screening or hemorrhoidectomy). The only thing we can do is to recognize the rarity of this disease and refer the patient to specialized centers as soon as possible, avoiding waste of time/wrong management.

A true honor! Couldn't have happened without @MayoClinicSurg and @DrDavidLarson's mentorship.
This year’s first place award for the CoC Paper Competition is awarded to Richard Sassun, MD from Mayo Clinic Rochester. Dr. Sassun received his award at this year’s CoC Plenary Session in San Francisco on 10/19. Congratulations!

Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancers represent a burden for both patients and surgeons. A specific mutation in the codon 13 of KRAS increases the risk of local recurrence. Read more in our PSM study! @DrDavidLarson @KellieLMathisMD
