Nice update from NWS on the weekend threat. - - Good morning everyone, now that we've got the last system out of the way our attention now turns toward the weekend. A line of strong to severe storms is expected to move across the area Saturday night through early Sunday morning. This is a little later than previous forecast trends. A squall line (QLCS) appears likely with the ingredients that are in place - so damaging straight-line winds with embedded tornadoes looks like the main threat with this. A low chance of localized flooding is also forecast, due to the already saturated ground conditions from yesterday's rain, but the good news is that this system will move through quickly and limit any significant flooding.

Ready for a look ahead to next week? Ready or not… the Arctic Floodgates are opening again.
Models trended significantly colder overnight. There's little doubt about next week being a "climate emergency" with extreme cold -- perhaps historical -- wrecking the central United States. The Polar Vortex is unleashed at maximum ferocity.

You gotta really zoom into this map to see the numbers, but here's some of the really impressive Storm Total rainfall amounts from that departing storm system. Thanks NWS BMX! #alwx

Good morning! The front that brought the big storms and drenching rain will exit the state early today. It’ll be cloudy until mid-day, but expect improvement as the day goes on. We’ll see some sun later. Breezy and cooler today. We’re headed for the 30’s tonight. Friday will feature a fair amount of sun, but hang on. The next storm system moves in by Saturday evening and Saturday night with yet another rather potent severe weather threat, including a significant tornado risk . Behind this system, it will turn sharply colder Sunday into Monday. We’ll be in the upper 20’s by Monday Dawn. Monday’s high will struggle to reach the low 50’s. Click below for more. #alwx

There is one tornado warning in the state just north of Monroeville. That is the only warning. The warm front is stretched from Montgomery to Eufaula. Montgomery is now at 72°, but auburn is still at 55°. Juicy air south of the front is primed for storms. #alwx

A tornado watch covers much of central and parts of south Alabama until 3AM. A few tornadoes are likely. Hail up to ping pong size. Scattered wind gusts to 70 mph. Please make sure to allow notifications on our Weather App, and make sure your Weather Radio is plugged up and in the alert mode. Do not depend on Weather Sirens. If you live in a manufactured or mobile home, be ready to go to a more substantial structure during this Tornado Watch. #alwx

UPDATED Threat Level map and timeline. As the reluctant warm front creeps northward the greatest overnight threat will be in that Level 3 Enhanced area from Clanton/Alex City southward, through the overnight hours. Definitely not out of the woods yet. Stay weather aware. #alwx

The WARM FRONT hasn't moved much. Still in between Troy and Montgomery. The SEVERE threat is south of the warm front. Still 57 degrees in Selma and Montgomery, while it's 72 in Grove Hill and Troy. There have been tornadic storms in SW Alabama moving northeastward. Watching with great interest. #alwx

Unfortunately, we are still without an important radar this evening. The East Alabama radar (KMXX) has been down for several days. Techs were unable to resurrect the radar today. So, we'll have to rely on the Birmingham radar (KBMX) and the Ozark radar (KEOX). But we'll be very much missing KMXX data in this situation. Hopefully by the Saturday Severe Weather event, KMXX will be healthy again. #alwx

3:30 PM. The amazing temperature gradient continues. It’s 56° in Montgomery right now and 81° in Troy. Obviously the warm front is between Montgomery and Troy. In fact, currently it extends from Butler County into Pike into southern Russell counties. At the moment, there are no signs of any northward movement of the warm front. The warm front is the entire key to this whole severe weather situation. South of the warm front in the warm air sector is where the severe weather threat will be in increasing this evening and tonight Continuing to monitor. Right now there is one tornado watch in Alabama as far east as Dallas and Wilcox counties down to coastal Alabama. No tornado warning in our state at the moment. #alwx
