In the year ahead, we’re focused on building even stronger, more resilient communities through our disaster planning department—developing systems that can better withstand disasters, integrating new technologies into disaster response preplanning, and expanding our critical response teams across the United States. Our goal remains clear: to create a scalable, adaptable model of disaster response that can be deployed globally to protect lives and help communities recover faster. When Hurricane Milton—one of the most powerful storms of the season—struck in October, SRP was on the ground four days before landfall, preparing critical infrastructure ahead of landfall, prepositioning equipment and manpower ready to provide immediate assistance. Our team worked side by side with the emergency services network to deploy temporary power, security, paramedics, and contractors. The storm’s devastation was unparalleled, with record-breaking tornado warnings, but the resilience of our teams and our partners made a profound difference in the lives of those affected. In the face of challenges, we stand proud of what we’ve achieved and grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us. Together, we continue to prove that collaboration, innovation, and preparation can save lives and restore communities. Our SRP Critical Response Teams responded to an international cry for help when, without warning, Category 5 Hurricane Otis emerged and slammed into Acapulco Mèxico, leaving in its wake widespread catastrophic damage in October of 2023. Early in our response, we began networking with Jorge and Marta Arredondo Basurto and their organization Search & Rescue México. Sadly we learned during one of their storm-related missions, while they worked to provide care for victims, some of their critically needed rescue equipment was actually stolen from the emergency scene. Upon returning to the US, in the spirit of true humanitarian collaboration, SRP’s (Ret) Battalion Chief Samuel Eaton went to work reaching into a network of his fire department contacts throughout the state of Florida. The request for donated functional extrication equipment and structural firefighting gear was met with an overwhelming YES. Working with fire department officials from numerous departments including fire chiefs from Pinellas Suncoast Fire and North Collier County Fire Rescue. Over several months, the Florida Fire Service was able to assemble over 2000 pounds of surplussed functional equipment and protective gear. It took another few months in the fall of this year to get the equipment into the country. Search and Rescue Mexico began distribution of the equipment to fortunate and very grateful fire departments throughout their region right during the holidays. These gifts were met with countless smiles, gratitude and appreciation. We were honored and feel blessed that SRP played a pivotal role in making this happen, and of course are grateful to the leadership of these specific Florida fire departments for donating this life saving and firefighter protective equipment that will continue to serve the emergency needs of the citizens and first responders of Mexico.
