My letter to Delawareans:

This morning, I delivered my first speech on the floor of the house. I shared the fears from Delawareans across our state who worried for their jobs and the care and services they rely on because of this administration’s unconstitutional efforts to abuse power and cut and gut lifesaving programs. While the Trump Administration wants to prove that government can’t work by making it not work, I’m in Congress to build a government that respects everyone.

Since the FMLA’s conception, the benefit has been used over 500 million times. That’s 500 million times families didn’t have to choose between a loved one and a job. However, FMLA doesn't guarantee pay, and nearly half of workers aren't eligible. Today is the anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act, which gave workers the right to job-protected, unpaid time off to care for themselves, their families, or a new child. It's time to expand to paid family and medical leave.

I met with DANA, the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement, last week to talk about the challenges of a new administration that continues to threaten to freeze and cut off critical federal funding to organizations that serve Delawareans on the front lines. I’ll continue to fight against these challenges and help Delaware’s non-profits continue to serve our communities.

Modern Maturity Center in Dover serves as a lifeline for seniors in Dover. But in my visit this past week, the attempted Trump funding freeze was top of mind for everyone and it was heart-wrenching to hear the concerns of so many. Federal funding aids the Modern Maturity Center in almost everything they do to serve our community — down to even the lunch seniors were eating. These funds were appropriated by Congress, and the Trump Administration is threatening to illegally freeze all of these critical, life-saving services.
