Why the hell do we continue to strand thousands of vetted Afghans who fought the Taliban alongside us overseas and instead offer refugee status to people who aren’t refugees? Abandoning our Afghan allies endangers the family of active-duty service members and damages trust abroad in our military, empowering our enemies.

Freezing billions in NIH funding to universities will have devastating effects on health care. @UCSanDiego and universities across the country conduct lifesaving research to develop cures and treatments for diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and more. In San Diego, the life sciences industry is a huge driver of our economy. This reckless funding freeze will cost jobs and hurt families in CA50 and people around the world who rely on the medical innovation this funding produces. Trump must reverse this decision and I will keep speaking out and pushing back.

Laying off almost every employee at USAID has consequences.   By dismantling USAID, Elon is hurting the lives of these American workers, irreparably damaging our ability to combat China, and stopping life-saving aid to poor children.

President Trump's funding freeze for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation are stopping life saving research. Just now, I joined my colleagues outside of the Department of Health and Human Services to speak out and push back on these dangerous and costly freezes.

San Diego is home to nearly 65,000 federal workers who have been presented with this "offer." It's unclear if any of the commitments will be honored, putting federal employees in limbo, not knowing if they will be fired at a moment's notice. I can't think of anything less efficient and more wasteful than paying people to not work for 8 months.

Our government should cut waste and be more efficient. However, that process must be transparent and allow citizens to weigh in.   @ElonMusk has spent the last week firing government officials who stand in his way of gaining access to your social security information and classified data. None of this is transparent, and the reckless way Elon has gone about this is putting American’s privacy at risk.   I strongly support @oversightdems attempt to subpoena Elon and let people understand what is being done with their private information.

This Black History Month, I’m highlighting Black San Diegans from the past and present to share their stories of courage, resilience, and trailblazing leadership. Dr. Reavis’ contributions made our community and country a better place. We must remember and uplift his example.

Last week, I talked about some of President Trump’s most unlawful Executive Orders on @CBS8. He is not a king and we cannot allow him to ignore or rewrite our Constitution. Our judicial system must act as it was designed to uphold the Constitution and rule of law.

The sudden freeze of USAID has left Americans working in dangerous regions without access to their devices and agency support. President Trump needs to reverse course and ensure the safety of the Americans still overseas before anyone is harmed.

Thousands of transgender troops bravely serve our country in uniform. Removing them will do nothing to keep our country safe, especially when we can't recruit enough willing Americans. I will push back with every tool available to me, just as I did in 2017.

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the countless ways Black Americans have shaped our nation. Black history is American history. This month and every month, we must commit ourselves to reflecting on our history and continuing to strive for a more just and equal future.

My staff was also able to find summaries of the missions Dan’s father flew during the historic air combat operations conducted over Europe.  "We had been searching for a long time but you were able to find the medals and their history!" Dan said. "We are so grateful."

As National Mentor Month comes to a close, I’m thinking about the awesome impact mentors have had on my career, and the opportunities I’ve had to mentor staff members, candidates, and other young people. Happy National Mentor Month!

Today, my staff & I participated in the Point-in-Time Count. It’s always an important experience to talk to folks who are experiencing homelessness & ensure San Diego has the data needed to get its fair share of funding to help those in need. Watch for more about this morning ⬇️

I’m heartbroken by the plane crash near DCA that killed 67 people. Right now, the only thing that matters is taking care of their loved ones. I will do my part in Congress to find out what happened so we can try to prevent future tragedies. May these innocent lives rest in peace.
