So I guess they don’t think it is an “invasion” or a crisis. If they did they would act. Saying they won’t because Trump wants the issue to campaign on tells the American people everything they need to know.
I was there with
@justinamash
from 2011 to 2016 and watched this with great frustration. Finally determined I didn’t need to be there because the result of any vote was already predetermined. As a regular member of congress I had zero power to influence legislation.
BREAKING: Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe approves Magnitsky Report 95-3 calling on all Council of Europe member states to pass Global Magnitsky Acts in their countries to sanction human rights abusers
This is point I have been trying to make. Congress is hopelessly broken. When power is acquired, neither party allows real legislation or debate. Agree with this policy or disagree. Let members vote. If they don’t like it it’s easy to vote no.
.
@RepPressley
and I offered our Ending Qualified Immunity Act as an amendment to the Justice in Policing Act, but House leaders refused to allow a vote on our amendment or any amendment.
Let us amend.
Let us legislate.
Let us represent the people.
When Republican Presidents are authoritarian republicans seem totally fine with it. When dem Presidents are authoritarian dems are fine with it. Neither should be. Congress should pass laws. Presidents can sign or veto. Let’s get back to that.
Really quite an embarrassment in DC today. Clearly
@POTUS
is setting up
@VP
to take the constitutional fall. It’s not about standing strong. It’s a matter of keeping their oath to the constitution. Congress has no standing to overturn the States determination.
.
@RepSanfordSC
supported POTUS with his votes. Pro-tax reform. Repeal Obamacare. Opposed outrageous spending. Yet because he was willing to honor Article 1 Separation of Powers and speak his mind, he loses a primary? We have entered the twilight zone...
.
@RadioFreeTom
nails it here in this thread. When I was in congress, I noticed how angry people were becoming. Not because of any specific wrong they felt but simply because being wronged felt good to them.
I am going to take issue with this
@nytdavidbrooks
piece because I think Brooks, and many others, are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle in the "death of truth" and the "unwinding of demcracy problem. Thread follows. /1
BREAKING: Sergei Magnitsky’s family wins resounding victory against Russian government at the European Court of Human Rights. ECHR found his right to life was violated, he was tortured, unjustly imprisoned and he didn’t receive a fair trial
Well done

and worth the time to read. Quit bickering here. Putin is the problem not democrats or republicans. Sanctions. Seize assets. Isolate.
Deterrence failed. Now it’s time for Putin’s defeat. Sanction Russia. Seize oligarch assets. Arm Ukraine. Arm Ukrainian insurgents. Make Ukraine the graveyard of the Putin regime’s imperial dreams:
Was God’s grace not big enough for the citizen that was actually killed? As Christians it’s best to be careful and not to say things like this, lest people believe that God’s grace is only good enough for some but not for all.
@MollyBeck
This is nonsense. The money for Navy ship building at Marinette Marine happened when President Obama was in office and congressman
@stevekagen
represented WI-08. I helped it along while in office and
@RepGallagher
continued to support it.
If this is the case it may prove that he should not be Speaker. Part of the job as currently operated, is to in part protect your majority by NOT putting them on the record. Campaigning for Speaker while weakening the majority is probably short sighted.
🚨BREAKING:
@Jim_Jordan
is aiming to schedule a floor vote on his bid to be speaker for TUESDAY.
55 House Rs said they wouldnt vote for him on the floor, but allies been working to shrink that all weekend. But it's a very, very steep climb.
JORDAN is intent on putting ppl on
This column is terrific. Very thought provoking. I was with a US Senator a few weeks ago and he told me voters are just angry. All they want from him - is for him to be as angry as they are. Yet they can’t articulate what they are angry about.
It’s a common critique of Christianity to say that people admire Christ, not Christians. But is this true? Would the world love Christians if they were more like Christ? I think not. Even his compassion is divisive. His mercy contradicts a merciless age:
People pounded me when I said Border Walls don’t always work. You can go through them, under them and over them. Here is what Trumps wall looks like today in Lukeville, AZ.
What’s not said, is that is already against the law in all 50 states to vote in federal elections if you are not a citizen. Most states already require this. But…let’s chase the ghost anyway.
Johnson: We will introduce legislation to require every single person who registers to vote in a federal election must prove that they are an American citizen first. You have to prove it
It would be one thing if the deficits were the result of a bad economy, but they are not. They are the result of bad decisions by congress and the administration. I remember when R’s opposes this kind of thing.
I am unable to understand why anyone who calls themselves a Christian could support this. Jesus was the “Prince of Peace”. You would think a Christ-follower would try to follow that example. Trump wants to counter punch. Jesus says love your enemy.
Trump continues to attack DeSantis: So I hit him hard. I hit him low. I hit him, just like we did to ISIS. We hit him hard. We hit him low. We hit him high. By the time he announced, nobody knew what happened, they said he was a shell of a man
No, President that I am aware of has ever “Re-appropriated” money after congress clearly said no. Plus the first phrase of Article 1 gives legislative authority to congress and nothing would imply that they can simply give that right away.
Left and right will be going crazy blaming each other for yesterday’s assassination attempt. I decided to spend time looking in a mirror asking what I should do differently. America needs a deep moment of introspection and reflection on civility and our collective role in it.
I often get asked “what happened to America and why are we so divided?” It’s all about incentives. When you win because you hate someone rather than win because you care about them, divisiveness and anger prevail. Reward love and caring and not hating to turn things around.
It has been fascinating watching the Republican response today. How fast they went from “Lock her up!” chants about HRC’s email with classified docs to “He did nothing wrong” when Trump got caught with 300 classified docs at his home. We are in a sad place in politics in the USA
Are you suggesting the DOJ not indict members of congress because A: they are republicans and B: because it’s close to a midterm election? and C: because they were popular? Should DOJ ignore evidence of a crime for those reasons? Really?
Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department. Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff......

. Given the circumstances of Trump world today, it was a timely read. Well written. Thought provoking. Challenging. Everything I love in a book. Great work Denver. When I come and visit the distillery we will have much to discuss.
Sen. Murphy just accused republicans of gutting veterans care by over 20%. The reason these negotiations are so tough is because one side is simple lying about the provisions in the House bill. There is no language gutting veterans benefits.
I believe that humility matters in leaders. The gap between 41 and 45 is so large as to be a chasm. Genuinely humble people are often that way because they are secure in the knowledge of how others view them. Those that aren’t cannot see it.
I wish all these Republicans talking about the debt today, we’re as tough a few years ago when they also had the WH with Trump. But then they spent like drunk sailors. Now they are upset a bill is coming due.
Wow. Vivek’s got nothing after
@Kilmeade
’s obvious counterpoint: Russian forces are getting hammered right now without a single US troop on the ground.
*That* weakens any Russia-China alliance—because it weakens Russia. It’s a no-brainer. Please watch.
Seems like a total meltdown going on in DC over 9.1% inflation announcement. Let me help you members of congress. Please just stop. Stop trying to help. Stop spending money. Stop printing dollars. Just stop.
I was challenged last night to offer solutions at the border that aren’t just dem talking points. Solutions are always tough. Complaining is easy. So here are a few ideas.

with some math here. Three times Jordan got votes he lost….by a landslide. 91%-9%. He is the one who should call it off.

When you hear politicians speak this way, what they are really saying is that ONLY THEY are smart enough to help the country. It is the height of arrogance.

@JesseBWatters
I represented NE WI in congress for six years
@JesseBWatters
and the fine folks from WI DO NOT talk that way in bars or anywhere else. Maybe you should come visit and we can teach you what class looks like.
No matter what your thoughts are on this kid, this is the dumbest thing I have seen a member of congress do. We need to stop exalting this kid’s poor choices. People died. It is ALL BAD. Vigilantism should not be rewarded. He should never have been there.
Not a horrible idea, but here is a better one. Just end Selective Service entirely. The US can always reinstate a draft if ever needed. But we haven’t had one in 50 years. So…save the money and end the debacle now.
BREAKING: The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee's intends to require women to register for Selective Service as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY25.

in the Ribble family. My grandsons are on fire! Congratulations Ben! And congrats to my son and daughter in law for all the support they gave both boys on their journey.
@clintribble
It’s profoundly disappointing watching the clown show in DC the last few days. In the meantime, no one is addressing a $20t debt, the upcoming insolvency of SS or Medicare, ending the war in Afghanistan. Each side trying to out- stupid each other rather than work for the people.
Both the current president and the former guy were born in the 1940’s. I just pray for a younger, next generation leader to emerge to lead the country. Tired of the old guys doing it.
I often share info about books I read. I read a pre-release of this book by my friend
@MilesTaylorUSA
. It’s extraordinary. An inside look at the deep personal cost one experiences for truth telling. Well worth the time.
After watching the very compelling testimony for SCOTUS yesterday, as well as hours of news coverage, it’s clear that people were mostly hearing what satisfied their previously held leanings. Minds mostly unchanged. The process forever damaged.
This guy gets way too little credit. He is a skilled and thoughtful leader. He brings people together rather than pushing them apart. I genuinely admire him and his leadership.
Secondarily, the constitution reserves the right, in fact, vested the right, of appropriations to the congress, not to the courts or the Executive. Therefore ONLY the congress can say how money is spent. POTUS can veto the spending bill, but he can’t appropriate funds.
Frustrating. POTUS claims he wants congress to work in a bipartisan fashion. This bill was bipartisan and bicameral, and his response was to veto the people's legislation. I would prefer you leave my 401k and savings alone Mr. President.
I just vetoed my first bill.
This bill would risk your retirement savings by making it illegal to consider risk factors MAGA House Republicans don't like.
Your plan manager should be able to protect your hard-earned savings — whether Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene likes it or not.
The reason this keeps happening over and over is because they DO NOT TAKE MORE TAXES. They just add more debt. If people had to actually pay taxes for it this it would eventually stop, as less expensive options would not only emerge but get used.
@RepThomasMassie
Today Biden announced $42 billion to get 8.5 million families broadband by 2030.
Come on man! That’s $4,941 per family, to be taken from those families and other families in taxes.
@elonmusk
’s Starlink can do it for $599 per family, and you don’t have to wait 7 years!
Just want to clear something up. Green Bay talker Gigante claimed on his show that I left congress early. I completely finished my term and left at the end of it. I self term limited to a maximum of four terms and kept that promise retiring after three full terms.
This graph is telling. Republicans in congress attacked deficit spending - fighting constantly with President Obama and driving the deficit down. Then with Trump, they simply stopped fighting and the President approved it. All with a robust economy when tax receipts should go up.
