Actually he was flying from Europe and yes Air Canada controls their airspace over the Atlantic but after he entered US territory his plane was totally under US control. The privatizers who failed despite the advocacy of my friend and then Chairman Bill Schuster with my opposition during Trump 1 are back. Seriously give over the critical civilian and military airspace over the US to a private entity. The list of other nations failed or flawed and much more expensive priitization experiments is long including Canada who he thought guided his plane to NY. Air Canada their ATC handles less than 5% of our daily US traffic. Do we need modern equipment, towers and more fully trained Controllers - yes. But the solution is not magical Musk but thoughtful reforms adopted lawfully by Congress and fully funded. Do not jeapordize our ATC with Musk “DOGE”

So after briefly mentioning the tragic collision by Washington National and loss of life; Trump launched into a self serving political tirade blaming DEI for the crash. His VP and 2 Secretaries Hegseth and Duffy immediately backed him up on DEI as the probable cause - pretty despicable esp with recovery efforts ongoing and the investigation just getting underway. A few thoughts: There are an unnecessary number of military helicopter flights in this incredibly congested. Airspace. Military helicopter transport should be reserved for emergencies, national security and other necessities not the convenience of generals and vips who want to avoid congestion in their chauffeur driven SUV’s. If the military wants to train in this airspace it should be after 10pm and before 6 when noise restrictions dramatically limit flights at National. The last Congress in the FAA reauthorization led by Senator Cruz who wanted a direct flight just forced DCA to accept more flights over their strong objections because of congestion, capacity, and safety. This issue should be revisited. Congress must adequately fund ATC both equipage and personnel with an uninterrupted appropriation. We need more air traffic controllers and yet Trump has imposed a hiring freeze. Let the NTSB (which Trump wants to politicize) do its job find out what went wrong and then take any and all appropriate actions to see it doesn’t happen again.

Apparently MAGA does not include protection against terrorist attacks and aviation security among many other safety concerns for Americans. Trump fired all the members of the Aviation Security Committee established after Pan Am 103 - airline members, unions - pilots mechanics flight attendants and other security experts and concerned family organizations focused on potential vulnerability to attacks and other disasters. He then went on to fire the best TSA. Administrator ever - who he appointed - because of a perceived non MAGA policy years ago. He also has reassigned the Joint Terrorism Task force to deportations along with the HomelandSecurity task force specializing in terrorism, human and drug smuggling. Not to worry with Hegseth at the helm of DOD and maybe Gabbard as head of DNI our enemies are quaking in their boots.

So Elon (the shadow President) says no impact 33day govt shutdown as essential employees 420,000 would still work without pay. Their average salary is less than 7k a month. Thats CBP - remember border security, TSA - aviation security, Air Traffic controllers during busiest travel season, Coast Guard enlisted and line officers - drug and human smuggling interdiction etc. Many, especially more junior essential employees can not go 33 days without a paycheck. But Elon 400 billion could go 400000 years at 1 million a year without any additional income at 83K a month no wonder he says no problem. Oh yes then there is the National Park shutdown over the holidays, no new social Security applications processed and myriad other delays for millions of average Americans. NO PROBLEM‼️

Under shutdown endorsed by Musk the USCG get no pay what about maritime security in the Carribean and pacific coast from drug, human smugglers and terrorists. Someone who doesn’t live from paycheck to paycheck has no idea about the impact on these critical workers and their families. There was a bipartisan deal by the Legislative Branch and shadow President Musk bullied Trump into opposing the critical legislation.

@SSWorks @ValHoyle @RepValHoyle This waste. If and probably when they go after Social Security, Medicare and other essential programs she will lead the fight. I spent 26 years in Congress half in the minority and you do not block the R’s worst porposals by burying your head in the sand.

@BasedMikeLee You said hard decisions are necessary. Here’s one - I introduced legislation numerous times to lift the cap on income subject to FICA that leads to at least 75 years of solvency to the Trust Fund. Guess thats too hard for you Mike‼️

@michael_stumo Bonus with no consequences. The recent felony “Plea deal” otherwise known as a nothingburger by the Justice department will not change the profit and exec bonus culture but an exec perpwalk and prosecution could.

@MarkHertling Tim served 12 years in the House during my term. He was the senior Dem on Veterans (former command SGT Major) and on the T&I committee with me. Solid legislator could work across the aisle, smart, patient, a real leader who is truly a nice guy. Great VP choice‼️
