Call for Input: Protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in relation to forced displacement Currently, 60 UN Member States criminalize private, consensual same-sex intimacy, with at least 6 imposing the death penalty, while 14 criminalize gender expression, targeting transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. The report will identify current trends, good practices, and recommendations for States to conform and comply with international standards on asylum, refugee protection, and internal displacement. It will also address forced displacement due to real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, exploring supplementary protection measures and involving stakeholders like UNHCR and OHCHR for a comprehensive analysis of challenges faced by LGBT individuals in displacement contexts. π

Call for Fellowship Applications: Migration and Technology Monitor The Refugee Law Lab has launched the third annual Call for Fellowships at the Migration and Technology Monitor. This year, five new fellows will join the community of 2023 and 2024 fellows, contributing to critical projects at the intersection of migration and technology. Priority will be given to projects addressing technology under occupation, environmental impacts of tech, and the gendered dimensions of AI. Applications are particularly encouraged from displaced individuals, stateless persons, and those typically ineligible for traditional funding sources. π

Applications for the Refugee Student Settlement Pathway (RSSP) are open! This new pilot program from the Australian Government will provide 20 young refugees (aged 18β30) based in Malaysia, Thailand, and India with the opportunity to pursue higher education in Australia. Students can enroll in undergraduate, postgraduate, or vocational courses in fields such as nursing, civil engineering, technology, business, and economics. Participants will arrive on permanent humanitarian visas and receive support from campus groups for settlement and integration. Eligibility criteria: Aged 18β30. Registered with UNHCR in Malaysia, India, or Thailand (RSD not required). Completed Year 11/12 or equivalent (e.g., GED). Not completed a Masterβs or PhD. Proficient in English (language proficiency will be tested). Willing to relocate to Australia without accompanying family members. π
