So where is the safe route to the UK? The waiver of visas? The welcome for those fleeing war and oppression? This is both shameless and shameful without that…
@ukhomeoffice
This is jaw-droppingly, gob-smackingly untrue. We exist as a charity because there is NO help nor provision for almost anyone getting
#refugee
status.
It’s in your power to change this. You could set up safe routes - like those for Ukrainians - you NEVER see them on small boats. You could re-open Afghan & Syrian routes. You choose not to. You choose danger for others.
My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tragic loss of life in the Channel today.
This morning I spoke with our Border Force teams who have been supporting the French authorities in response to this incident.
This is an appalling and inhumane policy. It must be in breach of the Refugee Convention too. Could weep with rage and grief at the depths our poor country is plummeting…
@GriffinKearra
Three refugees from war & persecution - who last saw each other in the

- now safe and productive - in my garden in London. Should lift anyone’s spirits! Hope it helps.
@ZoeJardiniere
Those Syrians fleeing the same Russian bombs as the UKrainians we welcome are fleeing? What could be the difference between them, we wonder?
Former guest, N, is a porter in London.
His host says: "He's transporting people with COVID 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. He is a saint. Says he feels grateful to the British people for providing him with safety and this is a kind of pay back."

#RefugeesWelcome
@DPJHodges
Oh that’s easy! If we can give Ukrainians visas, we can do it for others feeling war and persecution too. Let people apply for asylum without having to be on British soil and the smuggler model is broken at a stroke.
Amazing
#GoodNewsFriday
is joyous Saba from Eritrea, who just got
#RefugeeStatus
after EIGHT YEARS in the asylum system. We hosted her with EIGHT hosts for from a couple of nights to a whopping 250. Then she stayed with the vicar of
@EASEealing
. Now she’s seeking work as a chef.
@10MinuteHistory
Hi, I’m a refugee charity. My greatest hits include “But everyone is ‘our homeless’” “No, refugees are not benefits scroungers” and “so glad to hear you support (insert random other charity), it’s possible to help more than one”
This
#GoodNewsFriday
features Yonas from Eritrea graduating with a 2:1 in B Eng in Electrical Engineering from
@ManchesterMet
. With no family anywhere, he invited hosts Richard & Kate to the ceremony. They felt so honoured. He’s now actively seeking relevant career opportunities
Shocking! And it’s one reason we check out hosts, guests and accommodation offered before making a placement. It may be laborious and slower but it has to be safer and more likely to last.
Some men lied about having several bedrooms in their one-bed homes while another proposed sharing a bed, writing: “I have a large bed. We could sleep together”
This letter alone made it worthwhile. Thanks Rasheed for giving such a different perspective on life to both myself and my boys. Thanks too to
@RefugeesAtHome
for helping to make this happen. It was a hugely positive experience and I will definitely host again. 👍🏻
#GoodNewsFriday
: Dr A, was an asylum seeker when we hosted him March & July 2020. He’s just been granted asylum and has joined a specialist paediatric training scheme in Yorks & Humber. Currently training at Leeds Royal Infirmary.

Good news hard to come by this week, what with the beastly bill & all. But at least these 2, hosted together, make it

Such a relief that the flight to
#Rwanda
will not depart tonight. We don’t really do lobbying/politics etc. But no-one engaged in asylum-seeker and refugee support could be other than ecstatic at this result…
Faraj: “When I told my host I was gay, I was very worried about her reaction, but I saw a smile on her face & she said to me, ‘wonderful’. Then I felt such a relief - I could breathe. Being with this family was not only a safe place to live, I could express my feelings”
#LGBTHM21
@JFCrisp
Would love to know how it works! Who does the safeguarding? Who checks out host and guest? Who makes the matches between host and guest? Who sorts it when it does wrong? Must be fabulously well-resourced and in development for months to deliver this by Friday…
Dr Alnasan is an anaesthetist saving lives in an ICU in W. London. She is also a Syrian refugee hosted by 4 of our hosts for 631 nights in all. Here with
@nikkiclarke1
(551 nights!) We’re so proud of & grateful to our friend Wafaa.
#RefugeesWelcome
Time for
#GoodNewsFriday
: it’s 18yo asylum-seeker A, who needed emergency hosting one Friday in November. (3 hours from referral to hosting!) Now moving on to a hostel and with a bike given by our donor, so he can ride, free, to his nearby college.

next?
@marobec
@KirstieMAllsopp
Maybe they weren’t fleeing war or persecution. There are no legal ways for Kirstie’s boys - had they been born in Eritrea, Sudan, Afghanistan or elsewhere where young men are under huge threat - to get here without risking their lives and claiming asylum.
The formal ending of dread
#Rwanda
policy is a huge relief for our guests like J: arrested June 1st for deportation, detained in grim Brook House; released 3 weeks later; bailed to us. But still with a threat of deportation hanging over him. Now he can think about his future here
Day 17’s

garden, not doorstep. Shula & Isaac welcomed Tadewos 243 nights ago. His wife arrived on a family reunification visa in January, & joined him there. She’s learning English, he’s at uni, & great company for their hosts.
Those who fund us choose to do so and we are grateful to them. We take NO public money, and of course comply with charity commission requirements, so bigots can’t get us de-funded.
@DecisionPark
Our first Ukrainian guest and her baby arrived from Heathrow and got to the host’s home around 0200. And we hadn’t been certain they would arrive until late evening. Tea, a smile, Google translate and somewhere warm & safe to sleep

This

is all the better for being well overdue. Our former guest, I, from Kuwait, was imprisoned (age 17) for crossing in a small boat. Then slung out with nowt.
@MedicalJustice
helped. We hosted. Housed. Refugee status. Sofa-surfing. At last he has his own home!
@alanahern54
@ByDonkeys
@njbhorn
Why is an actor/film-maker not a real refugee? Doctors, lawyers, engineers, pharmacists, delivery drivers, teachers, students, banksmen, builders. We have hosted them all. All real refugees and human beings also.
@sophielouisecc
Asylum-seekers don’t go anywhere: no papers; no money. Refugees with status - & travel docs - can go places EXCEPT the country they fled. Only once they’re British citizens (minimum 6 years after refugee status) can they visit their home/see family. Why not check before posting?
@sophielouisecc
You do not have to come from a war-torn country to be able to claim asylum. You need a “well-founded fear of persecution”. Of course click-bait is great in your job, but checking the occasional fact also good….
Happy 60th birthday Neville Southall, former binman who became one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world (Everton and Wales). He now coaches kids in a Pupil Referral Unit, advocates LGBT rights, is a UNISON branch officer, and a foster parent.
At last,
#GoodNewsFriday
, as we welcome (we hope) our first guests from
#Ukraine
- the 69th nation whose people fleeing war and persecution we have hosted:
When ministers say there are legal routes for Ukrainians, people from Hong Kong and Afghanistan, this is what they mean: 22 people from Afghanistan. Afghans are the biggest number in small boats. 95% get refugee status. And so they should.
22 Afghans were resettled through a government route last year. 22!. While it claims people should only use its "safe and legal routes", thousands have been abandoned because of those very routes. Today Braverman wants to abandon even more.
#r4today
If one person followed us every day from now until the end of 2020, we’d reach 10,000 followers (all those potential hosts!). There must be a quicker way. Anyone?
It’s so manic over at R

@LushLtd
It’s doing nothing of the kind. In compliance with international law, the company is offering a welcome to refugees, however they arrive and wherever they are from. So should we all.
@VillredBill
@BBCBreakfast
@SimonJonesNews
Hi, we arrange hosting across the U.K. (though maybe you wouldn’t pass our assessment and vetting criteria as we only welcome generous people to
#host
refugees). 2,000 placements and 170,000 hosted nights so far.
@Nodoubt110
@Nigella_Lawson
And the chips contributed by the Irish immigrants - often making railways - who knew everything you could do with a potato. So a combination of two migrant cultures (like so much that has contributed hugely to the U.K.)
@johnredwood
So easy too! All your government has to do is have a policy of online application for asylum status - similar to that for
#Ukrainians
. There are NO UKrainians on small boats because there’s a safe, viable alternative. Wrecks people-smuggling. So get on with it!
So many congratulations to our
@carly_whyborn
- her
#MBE
for services to refugees announced this morning. We are incredibly proud! All power to you, Carly!

@ahyeahstark
@ZoeJardiniere
Sudan was a British colony for nearly 60 years. This country invaded it in 1899 and didn’t stop ruling until 1956. You could argue we have more responsibility for Sudan than Ukraine.
Young Oscar, aged 13, is raising funds for us by running the distance from London to Berlin (where his
#refugee
grandma came from) He finishes with a marathon tomorrow. He’d love some sponsorship!
What a really vile thing to do. As if the children were making the choices to flee. As if they weren’t, you know, human children in distress in an alien environment. What sort of powerful human does (or even thinks) this is the right diktat to make.
On a visit to Dover intake unit, Robert Jenrick ordered staff to paint over cartoons for children, telling them it is a "law enforcement environment...not a welcome centre".
🚨Breaking: The Court of Appeal has ruled the Rwanda plan is unlawful - it is not a safe country to send asylum seekers to. Major blow for

#GoodNewsFriday
: Q, 28, just moved into his own place after a month with D&S in Bournemouth. He said it was his 1st time in 2 yrs in a home. Hosts: "It was our pleasure, he was a lovely guest & we had the greatest food he cooked! Also he became besties with the dog"
@lucylocket1700
Most asylum-seekers would love to be in the “working population” but are not allowed to work. They can control & influence very little in their lives, while waiting aimlessly for YEARS for a Home Office decision. Including not being able to influence temperature (usually central)
Brilliant idea! Make new refugees street homeless by evicting them just 7 days after they get an ID card. Ensure that’s too speedy for them to find anywhere to live. Then penalise charities that even provide a tent against the winter’s gales. Britain. 2023.
This is just obscene. It is all about actively harming the most vulnerable with Braverman's Home Office. This serves no purpose beyond cruelty. It is designed to appeal to that type of pathetic little person who sees others as an inconvenience.

We all need
#GoodNewsFriday
as the gloom deepens. This week it’s Leslie & family in West Sussex- first time hosts with us-who welcomed Robel from rough sleeping after his eviction from Home Office housing. The day after he arrived was his birthday: they all celebrated together.
@JJSZ66
@JeffStelling
We love people to host. It’s what we do. But there is no reason for someone expressing empathy for refugees to do so. No-one expects you to host service personnel or
@nhs
supporters to build an operating theatre in their kitchen.
Those who joined in right at the start, who took the first steps, who laid down the bike, they are the brave ones, the ones we all hope we are.
#RefugeesWelcome
It’s not disrespectful, is it, to urgently try & find a

imminently & urgently needs a place to live. Late 20s. Loves running, football, volunteering. Please RT (or reply offering!)

@GaryLineker
says welcoming two refugees into his home was a 'wonderful experience', particularly for his sons.
Completely inevitable, given the conditions... 18 people to a dormitory, no doors, one loo and one bathroom between them. No social distancing. Honestly, what does the
@ukhomeoffice
expect?
The Home Office says a ‘small number’ of asylum seekers has tested positive for coronavirus at Napier Barracks in Folkestone. Groups supporting migrants say they are aware of eight cases. There were protests over the conditions at the camp earlier this week.
Maaz, a refugee from Sudan, ensures non-Covid patients still get their critical treatment. He says it’s got really intense due to CV-19. We hosted him for nearly a year while he qualified. And he’s just one of the
#guests
of whom we’re hugely proud.
#RefugeesWelcome
Thinking of all the
#Afghan
guests we have hosted in the last five years - 77 of them - and hoping they and their families here and in
#Afghanistan
are safe. Also hoping those still seeking asylum in the UK get it granted swiftly.
#RefugeesWelcome
@ukhomeoffice
If you can do this now, you could have done it hours, days, weeks ago and relieved the pressure on yourselves and the hapless applicants.
We love it when our former guests start something new: S, a Syrian Kurd, has started a painting & decorating business in S/W London. His host was his first customer & a very satisfied one at that. If you have a room needs attention, we have his contact details…
#RefugeesWelcome
It’s taken for ever but this
#GoodNewsFriday
sees our guest Mudawi finally getting his travel documents 9 months after applying. At last he can see his brother in France before an operation. Sorting out housing next.
#RefugeesWelcome
@wlondonwelcome
Because often they come with none but those they are wearing and it’s the government’s decision to ban asylum-seekers from working while they wait for a decision. Oh, and it’s common humanity to help those who have nothing and need it...
End of the week good news klaxon!
We are thrilled to share that one of our guests is moving into his own accommodation next week & another of our guests finally received his refugee status after a long & particularly arduous time of it. We wish them both well!
#FridayFeeling
#GoodNewsFriday
Asked about hosting, new asylum-seeker guest, 20yo M (left Sudan 5 years ago) says: “I feel safe here. You ask me how I slept, where I am going today. Nobody has asked me that since I left my mum” 😭😭
#RefugeesWelcome
Excellent news - though it should never have taken so long and we don’t know if all the men have been bailed too. We are happy to help by hosting and providing bail addresses.
🚨BREAKING
All women who were detained with Notices of Intent for Rwanda have now been granted bail and will be RELEASED from detention.
Whilst we are extremely pleased this has happened, it is shameful and cruel that it has taken so long.
#FreeRwandaDetainees
@SimonJonesNews
How many people came and claimed asylum by other routes? How many by plane, lorry or train? Was it a record high there too? Or a record low? Overall, fewer are arriving year on year, yet you stoke the racist fires by accepting the
@ukhomeoffice
line.
@SkyNews
There are about 3,000 Afghanis currently in the asylum system awaiting or appealing a
@ukhomeoffice
decision. A compassionate & effective first step might be to grant them
#refugeestatus
straight away. They CANNOT be deported to
#Kabul
now.
Two hosts in touch this week to say their former guests have just won appeals and got
#LeaveToRemain
after NINETEEN YEARS each as asylum-seekers. What a waste of two lives in limbo….
On a really difficult day for all who are, support (& host) asylum-seekers & refugees - what with the
#RwandaBill
passing & the sad deaths in the channel, we’re thinking of people grieving, anxious & apprehensive. This isn’t what many/most people in the U.K. are.
#RefugeesWelcome
We’re marking
@refugeeweek
with pictures of our hosts & guests. First up: M from

with their host. The same Russian bombs fell on both their homes… why are they treated differently? (We know why, right?)
#RefugeesWelcome
@GefferyMorgan
@maybulman
By “illegals” do you mean asylum-seekers who have claimed asylum, as is their right under the refugee convention 1951 - to which the UK is a signatory? People who are in
@ukhomeoffice
accommodation because they are barred from working? Shame on you for being so inaccurate.
We need a host in

We know that thousands of people host asylum-seekers and refugees, quite a few of them through us. And most find it a positive and life-enhancing experience. But please don’t volunteer. We hate turning people down as hosts….

Easy - change the policy. Allow people other than UKrainians to claim asylum online or elsewhere. Don’t insist desperate people have to be in the UK to claim asylum. Smash the smugglers business model at a stroke. Perfectly possible. It’s a policy choice. Don’t blame the victims!
@MrHarryCole
It’s not “sprung”! It’s making a case to the court and the judges making a decision based on evidence and argument. Called the rule of law. Don’t you approve of it?
