There were 9,975 licence recalls between July and September 2024 – an incredible 42% increase on the same quarter in 2023. The remand prison population as at 31 December 2024 was 17,023 (representing 20% of the total prison population) yet another all time high.

The prison population grew by 1,184 in the first five weeks of 2025. This takes the number of inmates to 86,802, the highest figure since Oct 21 last year (87,465), the day before more than 1,000 prisoners were released early as part of the Government’s bid to ease overcrowding.

Recent statistics indicate that self-harm incidents among male and female inmates have reached the highest levels since recording began in 2004. The rate of self-harm incidents surged by 11% over the past year, now standing at 891 incidents per 1,000 prisoners.

The number of older people in prison has grown substantially in recent years, with almost 4 times as many people in prison aged 60+ than there were in 2002. At the end of June 2024, there were 87,726 people in prison. 15,497 of those were over 50+ and 1,943 were aged over 70.
