Recent statistics indicate that self-harm incidents among male and female inmates have reached the highest levels since recording began in 2004. The rate of self-harm incidents surged by 11% over the past year, now standing at 891 incidents per 1,000 prisoners.

In the 12 months to September 2024, the number of recorded self-harm incidents peaked to an all-time high of more than 56,000 incidents in the male prison estate and more than 21,000 incidents in the female prison estate.
