This story launched the series back in March, a good overview of our findings and the kinds of cases we found. In all, we ID'd 1,000+ deaths following the use of so-called "less lethal" force, such as restraints, body blows and non-firearm weapons.

What a week for Lethal Restraint. A Selden Ring special citation and now this recognition from across the pond. Thanks to the AP news managers who stuck by our project through thick and thin. @nixonron @JuliePace @maryrajkumar @JeannieOhm

Congrats to the @AP news leaders who had the foresight to support Lethal Restraint to the very end. The series made a difference, with a new set of safety guidelines from the Police Executive Research Forum to academic researchers using our data for their own published papers.

This makes a business argument for investigative reporting. Readers want this content. In a year with a consequential election year and lots of political news, a series on police use-of-force that touched all 50 states had strong audience engagement.

Thanks to the editors who green-lit Lethal Restraint and stuck with it despite the hurdles obtaining records, information, police video across all 50 states. It was a time-consuming effort. Not all news outlets would try it. @JuliePace @nixonron @maryrajkumar @JeannieOhm
