Dear Ed Eyestone (BYU), THANK YOU for taking a 9:20 3200 meter HS kid and developing into a silver medalist. These days, colleges won’t look at you unless you’re under 9:00. Hopefully, that can change. ED certainly changed Kenneth, didn’t he….
It’s just a moment in time. But what a wonderful moment. It’s difficult to verbalize the work, discipline, nutrition, and mental focus that made this moment possible. On this day, you did something no other American has ever done! Celebrate! (And then get back to work:) LA28
Coaches and parents, if this guy just created a new goal or dream for your kids, foster it and watch it grow. Our jobs are to help them get there and remove hurdles. Running develops self esteem like no other. Your work becomes your reward. And that’s a good thing.
#TOD
I don’t expect kids to know the benefits of HS XC but parents should know; best GPA on average, you earn your own results, you master your own mind. The question isn’t ’WHY XC?’ The question is ‘why NOT?!’
#TOD
Practice was so well this morning I didn’t want it to end. The energy at XC practice can’t be matched. And it’s awesome they take it into the classroom. XC might be the biggest secret in all of HS. I’d say ‘don’t tell anyone’ but you need to. In this case, tell everyone.
#TOD
The medal hung around his neck is really not the prize. The prize is the journey and satisfaction that you arrived at your goal. The medal is just confirmation to everyone else that you accomplished your dream.
#TOD
XC is the foundation for a great track season. You can skip XC, your choice, but you’ll never make up the gains you left on the table when you skip the XC season. Is it really your stance to be ‘half’ as good in track? Don’t sit the bench for 1/2 the year. Run XC!
I don’t run kids to exhaustion/failure. Last one, fast one leads to running until your body fails. I love it when they complain that workouts ‘were too easy.’ When they hit target times, they have a success in their heads & success become a habit. Workouts are for the body & mind
Cross country is a sport of PLACE, not pace. If you tell me what pace you ran, I’ll tell you ‘I don’t care.’ I want to know what PLACE you finished. Win the race. No one will care about the pace. Most certainly not me.
#TOD
If you did your homework this summer (and I know many of you did), it’s time to be patient and NOT over run your fitness. It’s difficult and challenging to STAY in the groove you’re feeling. Do your best.
#TOD
Knock off the Strava training. Your training is to make YOU the best athlete you can be. Comparing your day with everyone else’s day will certainly lead to failure. Mind YOUR course and do it well.
#TOD
A smile is worth a thousand words. Or something like that. Today’s result is based on yesterday’s success. Do the proper training when no one is looking so you get the proper result when everyone is. Congrats G.
VO2 day. What is that? Little longer interval with a little longer rest. Too much rest and the kids run them too fast. So, 2:00 rest today. Pick the right pace and they can run several of them. Another great day to be a Husky!
#TOD
Don’t marry mileage! I know everyone wants to know how much are you doing this summer? It’s not how much, it’s what those miles are made of that matter.
#TOD
It’s almost the Fall. Cross country practices and seasons are starting. If you haven’t been, you need to recruit for your team and get more people out. I’ve NEVER met one person who ran the full season come back and say it was a mistake. One season can change their life.
#TOD
If you’re on a HS XC, building your own success is great but building the TEAM’S success is even greater. Build them up and make them faster. You’ll notice something special happening to you; YOU get better.
#TOD
Busy day today. Everyone wants to know HOW?
You want to know how? Zero missed practices, steady, slow, and consistent progress, a dose of dreams, and a brain that has yet to think ‘I can’t.’
That’s how!
Yesterday turned into today in one short night. Time to get rolling. The weather is warm and the racing will be hot….in 5 hours from now. Be sure to tune in. Let’s go G! And let’s rock USA!!
Why do I answer all these questions? Simple. I want to help EVERYONE get faster. Let’s dominate in the US! What about your guys? Well then, I guess they better take care of business themselves. Including G. We’re not done….we just started.
#TOD
Are you the Leader? Get to practice early, treat everyone’s time with respect, get the work done with a smile, and encourage other’s success. Daily. And if you don’t think you’re a leader, you’re wrong. When everyone leads, the team succeeds.
#TOD
You trained all summer and nailed the proper work. And now you have a target on your back. Get over it, get used to it, and accept the responsibility of being a Champion. Walk like one, talk like one, and become one.
#TOD
The easiest way to be good at something (anything) is to do what you say you’re going to do. If you say you’ll be at practice daily, be at practice daily. If you say you’ll be on time, be on time. It’s the easiest way to excel. Do what you say you’re going to do.
#TOD
I don’t do ‘last one, fast one’ but I definitely do ‘fast one? LAST ONE.’ If you can’t control the pace, the workout is over. Train smart, train with purpose.
#TOD
It’s not possible to describe how much energy you put into someone else’s goal until you put so much energy into someone else’s goals. Teaching/coaching is the greatest gift of all. The secret is the student has no idea how rewarding it is to you.
#TOD
As a kid, you watch the Olympics, close your eyes, and dream that one day, you can be there. You look good in the red, white, and blue with the letters U S A on your chest. It’s only a dream….. until it’s not. Dream big, reach for the stars.
#TOD
5:00am practice at the beginning of a new week. The ‘new-ness’ of the season is ending so the only thing getting you to practice is your motivation. This is the time when your actions have to exceed your words. TOD
I wanted to video practice because our days have gone so well. But I also want to be in the moment and just enjoy the experience. Today, all the proof I have of an outstanding practice is my memory. And that works just fine.
#TOD
Meet Omar. He’s wearing a Team USA jersey because he won the PanAm Jr’s 1500 in HIGH SCHOOL. As a junior and as a Senior, Omar won the State meet 1600; setting the state record. Went to Georgetown and is now a Doctor. Yep, a doctor.
One season just ended and another just starts. The only thing I know for sure is that I still enjoy helping athletes improve. Nothing like it! Thanks for making me look good.
#TOD
All the training & planning is wasted if you can’t control your mind come race day. It’s just another race and another opportunity if you just shut out all the crap around the event. What matters is what happens in lane one once the gun goes off. Focus.
#TOD
It’s time to lace them up and put a race bib on for our first event. Everyone has a bit of anxiety before a race. A small amount of that is good. Too much and you can’t perform. Think of it like a hard workout with a specific plan to execute. Then, let your fitness shine through
I know you want to learn from me, and that’s a good thing. But if I’m not learning from you as well….. then I’m not a very good coach. Never stop gaining knowledge, never stop improving.
#TOD
Sometimes, when your fitness level climbs rapidly, it takes the brain a bit to catch up and the brain may stop you from achieving your goal - for the day. One step at a time and a PR will have to suffice today. Celebrate the win but stay hungry. Congrats Huskies.
I try to explain what we are doing and WHY we are doing it. It’s a vital piece that helps them understand how successful their work is daily. Which leads to their self esteem and success in the races & in life. Let’s build this together.
#TOD
Train smart this summer. Don’t let your watch or your Strava account coach you. Adjust paces for the heat, adjust paces based on what your body is telling you. Run healthy, run fast this Fall.
#TOD
Grant. I’ll start with; he’s World Class.....As a person. Also as a runner but honestly, you can’t find better ppl than Grant. I was fortunate enough to be around during his HS years where he never lost until after graduating; including National Champs.Ran for Stanford, now Nike
First race, best to ignore all the flags, the tents, the other teams, etc. do your best to stay focused on your race plan. It will keep your mind relaxed.
#TOD
A great thing about Grant Fisher is his global impact on helping others be the best they can be and driving success by creating an awesome example. How much is that worth?
#TOD
We always save for something for ‘another day.’ That’s in part why I don’t do, ‘last one, fast one.’ The other reason is that I don’t want kids to ‘fail’ in practice and running all out means you run until your body fails. I like kids to walk away with success on the brain.
I love it when I hear that someone read a post, then took action. Makes me feel like someone benefited from the quick 20 seconds it takes to read the X post. Actions matter. Make a change, take the action. Today.
#TOD
If you have made individual and team goals, great. Now write them down, with a pencil. That makes it even more powerful. And lastly, review them weekly and that makes them the most powerful. Keep your goals and direction at the forefront of your mind.
#TOD
I’ve been asked several times…. Did you get over it? HECK NO! I didn’t get over it. I don’t want to ever get over it. I want this feeling to last forever but that won’t happen. We have to move on. I’m just not ready yet.
#TOD
Life is great. We get to make our own memories. You follow the race plan, cruise when it’s time to cruise, move when it’s time to move, close when it’s time to close, and you’ll make a memory alright…….and a darn good one!
#TOD
Olympic Trials are just amazing. The amount of work and the amount of dreams that go into just getting a bib number for an event is mind boggling. Congrats to all that dedicated work to get here.
#TOD
Mid-summer at 5:00am, it’s already hot. Rough training conditions. Kids packed extra water and flats for the workout in their bags (all good). But the best thing they brought today was motivation. To succeed!
#TOD
If you haven’t run the race in your mind prior to race day, it might not meet your expectations. See the field, listen to the breathing, stay relaxed and focused. If you can do that prior to the gun, you’re much more likely to do that in the race.
#TOD
Your dreams only stop being your dreams when you give up on them. Sometimes the best course of action is just to stay on the course of action and be patient.
#TOD
5:00 am practice was a bit sparse today. I know it’s summer and you want to stay up late and sleep in. Occasionally (very), not too bad. But if you want to make the races short in the Fall, you need to make it to practice in the summer.
#TOD
This is the best HS team I ever coached. As Fr, none of them trained. From this group, I learned the power of written goals and logs. I made them set goals in school, HOME, and athletics. Unusual for a HS coach but I was never a HS coach. I’m a life coach teaching success.
Sometimes success comes all at once, sometimes it comes in bits and pieces, sometimes it is slow to arrive. No matter: you’ll never know when it arrives if you give up. Stay the course. Be ready for when success knocks at your door.
#TOD
Part of the problem is that you assume every kid in the race is going to run a PR except one; you. Base your confidence on your training and racing, not theirs. Better yet, develop your confidence in yourself based on MY confidence in you.
#TOD
I had an athlete run Track Nationals yesterday. Although the race plan was to win, he made his move and ended up 2nd! An amazing season for him. Biggest lesson he walks away with is that he belongs at Nationals. You’ve got to absorb the future in your brain before it happens.
