The Rays need some help at catcher. I wrote up some thoughts on the matter and hit on a number of different routes they could go in 2025:

@FRoqueDM Yes they will need to clear 2 spots for Faedo and Kim

@briankim_tsu Yeah, health is still a question with him, and is surely a big reason why his price point fell to this level.

The Rays signed RHP Jonathan Hernández (28) to a MiLB deal today per the transaction log He’s a very hard tossing (upper 90’s) sinker/slider guy who has thrown MLB innings in each of the last 5 seasons. Career 4.29 ERA/4.45 FIP and a strong 52% ground ball rate.

Ha-Seong Kim is essentially the most passive hitter in baseball outside of Juan Soto. Will the Rays encourage him to swing more often? Caballero (+6.8%), Morel (+3.1%), and Palacios (+1.8%) all upped their swing rates after joining the Rays last year.

Infielder Ha-Seong Kim and the Tampa Bay Rays are in agreement on a two-year, $29 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season, sources tell ESPN. Kim is coming off shoulder surgery but is expected to return in May and slated to take over at shortstop.

Rays acquired LHP Brandon Eisert (27) from TOR this week. Soft tossing lefty who has a strong career 29 K% in the minors. FB, SL, CH mix and has options. He throws from one of the widest (towards first base side) release points in baseball:

@Homein22 Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Aidan Smith popping up on these lists during the 2025 season. Love his tools.

@CostaRicanSurf It’s not clear what exactly the procedure was, MLBTR reported that it was NOT Tommy John, which leads me to believe it was internal brace surgery. If that is true, it’s feasible he could be back by the end of this year.

A whopping 9 Rays prospects land on this Top 101, including many of the arms they traded for at last year’s deadline

“Despite speculation about Tampa Bay infielders Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe as trade targets, teams in contact with the Rays say that neither player is currently available. Tampa Bay, needing the offense, plans to hold onto both to start the season, rivals say.”

Drew Rasmussen is an immensely talented pitcher who dominated last year after coming back from yet another elbow surgery. Expect some decline in stuff as his stints stretch out, but this is absolutely an arm I’d want to bet on. Love this investment.

BREAKING: #Rays working to finalize a multiyear extension for RHP Drew Rasmussen, who is planning a return to starting. Gets $500K signing bonus, $2M salary this year, $5.5M in 2026, $8M option for '27 (when he would be a FA) that could bump to as much as $20M (or $500K buyout)

@ltw0303 @Homein22 Yep. Less service time, younger than Siri, and has an option left. I think his patient approach to pull flyballs would work well in the new park. Career 115 wRC+ against righties. Strong base runner and defender. Just a lot to like for a guy who should be attainable.
