@Der_Parrot My argument is not that history is repeating, but that we're facing similar problems for similar reasons. We don't need a physical law for that to happen. Republics can and have collapsed before + compromising democracy for security is part of how that happens.

@Der_Parrot The US is entering a late Roman Republic period, for very similar reasons too. The Patricians of our time have refused to do meaningful structural reform and they can only argue for a rule of law that is failing to negotiate with people's sense of desperation.

@Der_Parrot He has 2 years with the current congressional configuration, there will be midterms in 2026 thankfully. These coming two years will be tough, but I don't trust he will do everything he wants to do and not lose votes from people when the chickens come home to roost.

@beacebrocess To a significant degree it's a domestic issue, yeah. Not supporting Israel costsvotes, donors and various forms of support that you'd really rather have in a 2 party system. The US ultimately got itself in this position through its policy, but the interplay is like this now.
