@ConcordD0m Indeed, all of those films you showed come from directors who have a very good understanding of VFX and how to use it. This coupled with a clear vision for the film makes a big difference. Gareth Edwards and Takashi Yamazaki actually got their start in VFX.

@AngusMcFifePT Jurassic Park has some of the best shot design for both the VFX shots and the animatronic ones. ILM also had a very solid amount of time to deliver the very limited amount of VFX shots. All of these together are why the shots look incredible and hold up even today.

Hyperion was designed to be mechanically plausible, being mainly driven by pistons and other recognisable pieces. I was keen on maintaining a grounded look for Hyperion. I love the small details we were able to add of objects being pushed out of the way by the rigs movement. It

@mrwollZERO You can do a film that is fully CGI and have it be incredible if it is planned well, changes aren’t constantly made, and the VFX teams have enough time to create and refine it. But yes, to your point, VFX is often used as a crutch to fix issues which should be fixed on set.

Today there are multiple Oscars, each highlighting different parts of the production. Best VFX is a digital category today.

@renbry Our base texture resolution is 4K. Mip-mapping in the renderer handles dynamic scaling of the textures based on distance to camera. But, because Stratosphere was so heavy data wise, we had to go through and drop the resolution of UDIMs that were less visible (internal parts etc)

@AlfonsoNation I worked on the characters for this film. We worked on this sequence for a few months before it was cut. The scene was in my opinion one of the best fights in the film. Shame we never got to finish it and give it the justice it deserved

Furiosa is a great film. Captures the thrill and excitement of Fury Road and gives more backstory to Furiosa’s character. Definitely worth a watch!

@ecto_fun Although I agree, A24 is actually one of the least profitable film studios currently, despite their success. One of the reasons they’re doing larger scale films is to bring in more money.

@AndrewHodgson3D Yep, I’ve seen assets with over 2.5k UDIMs. I guess if you don’t work in film these numbers are mind blowing to see. Especially if your average UDIMs are like 5-10

@CBMshots The interaction with the tree branches is so satisfying and well done. Adds so much to the shot

@romainrevert UVs were maintained when the model was cut and separated so it picked up our normal shader/texture workflows. Some pieces we wanted to be able to "fill in" so that they didn't look weird when cut and moving. For these pieces the tool would create the UVs and attributes required

Closeups of the Samurai armor. The final asset was made up of 3,236 pieces, 113 UDIMs, 26 materials, 731 textures, and over 320,000 individual strands of hair. My heaviest personal project to date. #cgi #vfx #3d #digital #3dart #digitalart #art #artist #3dmodeling #characterart

High end render-farms used for VFX such as those owned by WetaFX and ILM can have up to 1,000,000 CPU cores An average PC has around 10-12
