Every Tuesday in October
@tcm
is showcasing period pieces. In my latest article, I highlight some of the movies being featured in the programming and provide a history of the genre.
I'm very happy to announce that I'm a new freelance writer for
@TCM
. You'll see some of my articles on their Tumblr. My first piece is about The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) airing Tuesday and on Robinson's 100th birthday 1/31!
God speed Peter Bogdanovich. Not only was he an accomplished filmmaker, he was the OG film historian. Spent much of his life spreading the love of film. He will be missed.
An important life update. I’m leaving my day job next month to pursue writing and content creation full time. Expect lots more classic film articles and film festival coverage in the future! (And of course book reviews!)
Sidney Poitier didn't learn to read proficiently until he was in early adulthood. A friend in NYC helped him out & he learned quickly. He then went on to be an accomplished memoirist with several published books and even wrote a sci-fi novel. That man lived to overcome obstacles.

WOW. I’m blown away. Bradley Cooper’s remake adds layers to the story. Cooper and Lady Gaga have great chemistry. Gaga shows real vulnerability. Stellar supporting cast. Throw all the awards at this one.

BELFAST: A tender family saga told through the eyes of a young boy (brilliant performance by Jude Hill). Caitríona Balfe & Jamie Dornan are vibrant. Ciarán Hinds & Judi Dench are superb per usual. Skillfully directed by Kenneth Branagh. Classic movie references abound.
Did you know that when Dean Stockwell was in his late teens he fled Hollywood, took on an assumed named and lived as an anonymous day laborer? He returned to acting after a few years of freedom.

God speed Dean Stockwell. I had the pleasure of writing about him for
@tcm
earlier this year. He had such a fascinating journey as an actor.

Next month on

Check out my piece on this line-up!
Edward G. Robinson collected over 70 pieces of fine art, mostly Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. For the

I'm excited to share my interview with Mark A. Vieira, the author of Forbidden Hollywood: The Pre-Code Era (1930-1934) When Sin Ruled the Movies. The interview is available on and the TCM Tumblr
If you haven't been able to get your hands on a decently priced copy of Myrna Loy's memoir,
@DeanStPress
is releasing an affordable paperback this November.
I have so much

swag. A blanket, a gym bag, a candle, lots of mugs, books, festival passes, totes, etc. My favorite though is a DVD copy of Conversations with Robert Osborne signed by the man himself. One of my most treasured possessions!
Just some
@tcm
trinkets around my apartment I’ve collected over the years (the WHMS pillows were a v thoughtful 30th bday gift from
@AstaBoots
because she found out I was having a Nora Ephron themed bday party — this is how kind and engaged the staff there is).
Today is Robert Osborne’s birthday. I’m celebrating in a way Osborne himself would appreciate: with my favorite ice cream, mint chocolate chip. I miss you Robert!

Josephine Baker worked as a spy for the French resistance.
For her work she received several honors and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle.
This is my all-time favorite bumper. It was also my early introduction to Chet Baker and jazz music in general. Watching it always makes me smile.
@tcm
It's been one year since we lost Robert Osborne. I think of him nearly every day. Last year I wrote about all the times I saw him at
#TCMFF
and that one glorious moment I got to meet him:
Paris Blues (1961 is on
@TCM
tonight. For their Tumblr I wrote a piece about how race is depicted in the film and how the story went from idea to final film. There is even a connection to Timothee Chalamet
Good morning! This is what Humphrey Bogart's character requests for breakfast in the film In a Lonely Place:
orange juice
eggs over easy
bacon
toasted muffin
strawberry jam
and lots of coffee
Sounds good to me!

Sidney Poitier was in my thoughts yesterday. I just had a feeling that he would go soon. I hate that I was right. Words cannot express how much I adore and admire that man. A true talent. God speed.
If you're looking for online resources for classic movie research and your local library has Hoopla, check out the service because they have a ton of film history books/bios available on there.

I bookmarked 129 titles!
The documentary Nichols and May: Take Two aired on PBS back in 1996 but has long since been unavailable. It premieres on

as part of their Saturday

line-up.
My review:
Actress Susan Peters (born

) was paralyzed in a hunting accident on January 1, 1945. While we may look at her story as a tragic one, it's important to note the many ways she proved her resiliency and strength.
