I assume you’ve never read any of the sourcebooks from 2nd or 3rd edition or any of the supplementals. In 3rd edition there are around 8 supplemental books on top of the main setting book.

It has distinct characters and monsters with background stories ranging from Elminster and the Harpers Szass Tam and the Red Wizards.
