Public Interest Litigation is an area of practice that is highly addictive, and when you start, you just can never stop. Last week, we got a favourable Judgment from the ELC Court in Isiolo, ending a journey that began in October 2019. The matter concerned over 20,000 citizens of Burat Ward who were being evicted by the Kenyan military. The military, holding a title deed, gave the petitioners 30 days to vacate the land. We dashed to court, assisted by my learned senior Magee Maina , we managed to get conservatory orders stopping the said eviction. The judgement was delivered confirming that indeed there were historical injustices meted out by the colonial government vide the several pre-independence gazette notices that allegedly gazetted the land as public land. All due to the fact that when the colonialist came, there were people living on these lands. Research in this matter was intense as it involved my very able team going to the national archives to retrieve historical documents. Burat ward is one of the food baskets of the northern frontier, the people will now be able to continue with their livelihood without threat of eviction by ANYONE pending the issuance of their title deeds. I wish to thank the @LawSocietyofKe for entrusting me with this matter, as they referred the clients to me, pro bono. The angels in heaven continue to sing in unison today, because justice has indeed been served. #ProBono #PublicInterestLitigation #HumanRightsLaw

I am delighted to note that the just concluded joint EAC-SADC summit has released a communique emphasising the need for all state and non-state actors in the DRC to consider an immediate cessation of hostilities. Additionally, the same summit has asked both the DRC government and opposing sides in the war to uphold moral and legal principles that protect human rights and enable humanitarian assistance to affected populations. @jumuiya I extend my congratulations to EAC Chairman, H.E President William Ruto and SADC Chairman, H.E President Emerson Mnangagwa, for co-chairing a successful summit at which a ray of hope for peace and democracy in the DRC may be realised. However, it must be stated that foreign actors in the DRC and exploiters of its mineral wealth must ultimately leave so that it can dwell in peace and realise its full potential. As I have stated before, the @ealawsociety remains ready and available to work with all organisations and individuals in and outside the DRC, whose interests are to bring lasting peace and find justice for citizens of the DRC. War is not the answer. And Africa must immediately pursue Afrocentric solutions to its problems. We extend warm regards to the people of the DRC as we assure them that they are not alone; we will stand with them.

We beseech all players in the DRC situation to come to the negotiating table with clean hands, and to exercise restraint as regional and global bodies seek a solution. On behalf of the EALS, we pray for an amicable and lasting solution so that citizens of the #DRC can finally realize their full economic andpolitical potential in an environment of peace and tranquility.

I had the pleasure of ending the year with amazing colleagues at the oldest bar in the region, the @LawMombasa Society. They have been around for an incredible 113 years, (the bar, not those in attendance)and they’re led by the incredible Adv Natasha Ali the first lady to lead the bar in its entire history! Talk about a trailblazer! Kudos MLS! To mark the 113 years the bar had a walk challenge where members were to walk 113km and oh they did! Some surpassing the mark and doing 800kms! MLS showed me things! Absolutely impressive things! We had a fantastic time - we dined, some sipped on some delicious wine and others like myself had soup, and we even danced the night away! The ohangla band really brought the music to life! Tera mos! We left there sweaty and totally exhausted but feeling happy. It was an absolute blast! I can’t thank the MLS enough for inviting me. It was such a pleasure to connect with everyone and share some laughs. The camaraderie was truly special. Bwana, I had an absolute blast! Thanks a million for inviting me! We do it again soon? In Shaa Allah.
