It has been a long time coming, but we have had so many requests from NHS Trusts, professionals and patients that we just had to share our new design with you before the end of Pride Month! Further details about how to get updated badges will be released shortly!
Tony Abbott said homosexuality “challenges the right order of things” and campaigned against equal marriage
It’s your choice to wear

@MattHancock
Please only continue to wear it if you actually believe in what it stands for
@KayBurley
It’s

, and two years since we launched pilot of
@RainbowNHSBadge
@EvelinaLondon
The 🏳️🌈 badge has always been intended to show support to LGBT+ patients and families using NHS services, to indicate that there is someone to listen, and offer support if needed
Today is Trans Day of Remembrance, when we remember all those who have lost their lives due to transphobia
We stand with our trans friends, who have always played a pivotal role in championing the rights of all LGBT+ people, and who need our support more than ever
#TDOR
My name’s Mike Farquhar; I’m a consultant paediatrician.
I run this
@TwitterUK
account and have been behind a lot of developing the
@RainbowNHSBadge
mode over the last 18 months or so
Forgive a wee personal thread
I get asked a lot why this matters so much to me
Announcement: Following a hugely successful pilot of phase 2 of the NHS Rainbow Badge project, and a detailed tendering process, we are delighted to confirm that NHS England has provided funding for a further 40 NHS Trusts to undertake the NHS Rainbow Badge assessment model. 1/2
As a gay man, and a consultant paediatrician, I’m far more worried about staggering impact of transphobia on people who just want to live their lives as themselves, about insane waits to be seen in gender identity clinic, huge impact on trans kids and young people of toxic media
I’m a consultant paediatrician
Advocating for those who have poorer health outcomes and suffer from structural inequities in our health system IS part of my job, and a hugely important part of it at that
We’re in the process, over the next few weeks, of transitioning
@RainbowNHSBadge
to Phase II (it’s like a Pokémon evolution 😁)

It’s International Pronouns Day today
Simple actions, like putting pronouns in your Twitter profile, email signature or on your name badge, can make a big difference
#PronounsDayNHS
We might not be able to march in
#PrideInLondon
today but the message of Pride remains clear:
We are stronger together, and we stand together to protest against ignorance, against bigotry, to affirm the right of everyone to live as who they are - and to celebrate

Hi, I’m
@DrMikeFarquhar
I started this account in 2018, part of
@RainbowNHSBadge
project
We’re coming to end of our first Phase and, v soon now, we hope to be able to share Phase II plans with you
As part of that, I’ll be retiring from this account (I may get a wee bit emosh!)
The external supplier for our
@RainbowNHSBadge
design is
@madebycooper
... they’ve just let us know they’ve now produced over 100000 🏳️🌈
@NHS
badges as part of the Rainbow NHS Badge project!
Great to see the project spreading and more Trusts launching!
#TinyChanges
My 5 year old niece’s view on this
(she was asked what the rainbow flag meant):
“It’s for love. And to be kind and that anyone can love anyone”
That this is still a question that’s been posed like this in 2019 is staggering.
We’re now up to 50
@NHS
Trusts in
@NHSEngland
who’ve launched
@RainbowNHSBadge
! 🏳️🌈
Each has committed to ensuring staff signing up to wear a badge understands the responsibility in wearing one, and providing education and resources, to support LGBT+ people accessing healthcare
End of an era for me!

I think
@DrRanj
expresses this v well here
There is plenty of room for 🏳️🌈 and 🌈 to exist alongside each other but what Pride, and the Pride flag, represent are rights and recognitions which were hard fought for, which are still under threat, and are not guaranteed in perpetuity
#PrideMonth
has started, so here’s my guide to rainbows and some of the images you and your little ones may have seen around!
Hope it helps x ❤️

I know the consequences for LGBT+ young people in the schoolyard when adults in positions of power, privilege and responsibility don’t call out people like Tony Abbott for his comments and opinions about people like them
Come on, now.
@MattHancock
is wonderfully socially liberal, particularly on LGBT+ issues. This sort of school yard debate devalues some of the very real issues our LGBT+ community faces.
One of our GPs spoke with an older man who has a terminal diagnosis, and his friend. When the GP asked if they were partners, the patient said, “See, I told you they’d be ok with us. They’ve got them Rainbow badges.” This is why
#NHSRainbowBadge
training is so important. 1/2

So excited to share the first announcement for Phase II of NHS Rainbow Badges. It wouldn't be right to do it without Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

*entirely my personal opinion*
Both
@BorisJohnson
@MattHancock
still owe acknowledgement AND apology for comments they’ve made in the past
We all make mistakes
But, if they *were* mistakes, it’s a bigger mistake to not admit that and apologise, and just wearing🏳️🌈doesn’t cut it
This keeps being framed as
@bbcnews
debate question
It’s not “sex ed for 5 yr olds”
It’s telling kids what they already know: people fall in love
Sometimes those people are the same sex
LGBT+ people exist
That’s it
It’s not up for debate
@BBCNews
is part of the problem
Hello to everyone who’s followed this account today!
If you want to know a bit more about the Rainbow NHS Badge Project, and the principles behind the badge, this Moment is a good place to start 🏳️🌈
It's
#TransDayofVisibility
We stand with our trans
@NHS
colleagues
We stand up for trans people, and give voice and support where it is needed
Trans people are too often met with too little knowledge, support and empathy
#TransRightsAreHumanRIghts
A perfect example of a deliberate editorial stance in relation to trans people
This study:
- did not specifically look at trans children and young people
- did not include people on hormone blockers
The decision to make this the focus of the story and headline is deliberate
It’s the 1 year anniversary of official launch of
@RainbowNHSBadge
pilot project
@EvelinaLondon
today!
We’ve seen huge interest and support in the project across
@nhs
, and are looking forward to developing things further in our second year 😁

🎂🏳️🌈
This little lot all distributed to new homes to be worn by
@EvelinaLondon
colleagues on wards and in community services this morning ... I love seeing the ripple of enthusiasm and excitement when people see them, and how quickly people “get” it
🏳️🌈
@NHS
The
@RainbowNHSBadge
project started as conversation between friends w/300 self-funded badges
Bit blown away that there are now over A QUARTER OF A MILLION of these out there!
The badges, and their supporting model, can only ever be part of a solution, but hopefully doing good!
Glad to see today’s High Court ruling confirming parents can consent on behalf of their under-16 children for puberty blockers without needing additional Court approval
🏳️🌈🚀🏳️🌈
@RAINBOWNHSBADGE
ARE GO!
We have started sending Implementation Toolkits across
@nhs
to those who want to launch 🏳️🌈badges where they work
Over 100 toolkits were sent out to
@nhs
Trusts, organisations and GP practices yesterday evening
A wee extra update to this: we had a flurry of notifications from Trusts today about their plans to introduce the project ... which means we’re now at over 50% of all
@nhs
Trusts in England having either launched the project or actively planning to do so.
Thank you all 🏳️🌈

Month: a potted history of the
@RainbowNHSBadge
project, what it stands for, how it works, what we’ve achieved so far and a little on what we’re planning next
I’m hugely proud of what this project has achieved, but know there’s still lots for us to do and improve
Another example of how and why negative views about LGBT+ people should be challenged
When people like Abbott or Wells genuinely argue LGBT+ people should be treated differently, or have different rights, to non-LGBT+ people, that’s what’s unacceptable
And if you haven’t read
@AliceOseman
’s Heartstopper graphic novels - warm, sweet, funny and authentic, as Charlie and Nick fall in love - it’s a brilliant teen/young adult 🏳️🌈 story of the sort I wish there had been more of when I was growing up
#YouCannotBeWhatYouDoNotSee
Detransitioning, and transition regret, can be a hugely emotive issue
However context is important: for the vast majority, appropriately supported transition improves health outcomes, particularly consequences on mental health, and deteransition/regret rates are relatively low
The
@RainbowNHSBadge
project was created to address challenges and inequalities LGBT+ people face when accessing
@NHS
healthcare
Those who choose to wear a badge are emphasising they are there to support LGBT+ people and their families as they attend our services

@NHS
It’s taken a lot of work and effort to grow that idea to where it is now ... but it’s great to see it starting to really take off.
It took us a year to get this far.
We’ll get it expanded quicker then that 😁
🧵The NHS Rainbow Badge scheme covers not only improving access to and experiences of healthcare for patients, but also looks at improving LGBT+ staff experiences within the NHS. The national Staff survey results show the current landscape for staff... 🧵
Last week we announced the 10 Trusts enrolled to take part in the pilot of phase II of Rainbow Badges. All Trusts will undertake an assessment process comprising of the following elements:
•Policy review
•Staff survey
•Patient survey
•In-depth LGBT inclusion assessment
We’re in the process, over the next few weeks, of transitioning
@RainbowNHSBadge
to Phase II (it’s like a Pokémon evolution 😁)
Info here, updates to follow
I think more than anything this is what we hear from people who have chosen to wear
@RainbowNHSBadge
“My badge starts so many conversations, with my patients and with colleagues, that I wouldn’t have had before”
Talking, listening, sharing each other’s stories, supporting 🏳️🌈💕
Asked by one one my elderly patients today what my
@RainbowNHSBadge
meant. Had a lovely conversation with her and afterwards she wanted to know if she could donate to the project somehow. The badges are such a great way to start conversations about LGBTQ+ issues!
2020 has brought new challenges (understatement!), not least blurring of use of 🌈and🏳️🌈 in relation to NHS
Emphasising why 🏳️🌈 is so important to LGBT+ people has never been more important
When people see our badge they have to be confident what it means
From
@VisualCap
, a visualisation of deaths caused by pandemics throughout history
If you’re watching
#ItsASin
, learning about the history of HIV/AIDS, ask why a pandemic which has killed >30M people in my lifetime isn’t something we *all* know more about
A favour:
Even if you’ve sent me a picture before, if you’ve got a
@RainbowNHSBadge
(any generation 😁) can you tweet me a picture of you wearing it (doesn’t have to include your face if you don’t want)
I’m looking to update the montage shots
A wee thread on some of the history of
@RainbowNHSBadge
, the principles underlying the model behind it, and how that is intended to work in practice as it is implemented by
@NHS
Trusts and organisations
Our society often normalises language like this talking about children
By 8 I knew I was different to other boys
By 12 I knew enough what “gay” meant to know it meant me (and, in 80s Scotland, it terrified me)
Saying young people are “too young to know” can contribute to harm
A huge thank you and Merry Christmas to everyone who’s supported
@EvelinaLondon
@RainbowNHSBadge
project in 2018
We’ve come a long way since this time last year!
We should be ready to start spreading this project across
@nhs
from v early in 2019 🏳️🌈
@GSTTCharity
@RCPCHtweets
Quick note: I run this project in, effectively, my spare time, on top of a busy clinical workload plus other additional work I do
Things are getting a bit more pressured at the moment, so may be more of a delay in replying to DMs/comments/emails relating to
@RainbowNHSBadge
🏳️🌈
Two of the most important things an LGBT+ ally can do:
1) acknowledge and apologise for their own honest mistakes
2) call out unacceptable views held by others when they see or hear them, whether they agree with them on other things or not
.
@MattHancock
is a LGBT ally - he couldn’t have been any clearer earlier this week, and is committed to helping ban conversion therapy.
Trying to slur Matt because of someone else’s views is deeply unfair and frankly wrong.
It’s the two year anniversary of this
@Twitter
account today
Twitter has played a major role in the story of
@RainbowNHSBadge
and it continues to be a really useful way to make connections and get information out there
Thanks for following!
Although not primary focus of
@RainbowNHSBadge
, we’ve had feedback from LGBT+
@nhs
staff that seeing colleagues wear the badge, talking about the project, has helped them be more open about themselves at work
All a gradual, still-needed, process
Sharp rise in racist attacks and comments directed against
@nhs
staff is shocking
Zero tolerance for racism to
@nhs
staff
It’s everyone’s responsibility to call it out
Woohoo! Hugely honoured to be Commended in
@RainbowHonours
for
@RainbowNHSBadge
, and our Toolkit which has allowed it to roll out across
@NHS
so quickly since Feb launch
The Comms geniuses behind it, Jess Law and Eilis McGrath are there to collect on behalf of
@GSTTlgbt
😁🏳️🌈
One comment that really stuck with me about
@RainbowNHSBadge
is from a still-working nurse, who recalled the days when she was told she would be disciplined if she marched with
#Pride
in her NHS uniform, and how far we’d come since then
This is worrying
This is why we’ve stuck to the principle that
@RainbowNHSBadge
has to be rolled out by
@NHS
organisations who also put in place the supporting model which emphasises education of badge-wearers, and that wearing a 🏳️🌈badge is a responsibility
If you are an organisation using a rainbow logo this summer remember this is much more than a fashion statement. You take on a rich and powerful history. You have a responsibility to stand up for all LGBTQ+ people.
Can’t handle it?
Then lose the rainbow.
You have to earn it.
By my reckoning there are 226 acute
@nhs
trusts in England
We’ve sent
@RainbowNHSBadge
Implementation Toolkit to 126: 100 to go!
If you’d like to see the project where you work, check with your equalities/diversity/inclusion lead; if not signed up, ask them to get in touch

Currently, CQC ratings don't reflect social media posts from providers (let's be honest, that probably would be helpful), but if we did, this
@CUH_NHS
response would probably get an Outstanding rating for the key line of inquiry of "Good Tweets"
#LGBT
#LGBTQslay
So it absolutely matters to me that things are different ... but it MUST shine out like a lighthouse into the dark
Confused, scared and vulnerable kids HAVE to see love, understanding and acceptance everywhere they look, because it’s hard to go looking for it yourself sometimes
Update sent today to all Trusts/organisations who have expressed an interest in adopting
@EvelinaLondon
@RainbowNHSBadge
and supporting model
If your
@nhs
Trust/organisation wants to be involved, please ask your Equality/Diversity/Inclusion Lead (or equivalent) to get in touch!
Have been catching up today with some of 230
@nhs
Trusts/organisations/GP practices we’ve sent
@RainbowNHSBadge
Implementation Toolkit to over last 6 weeks - really exciting to hear how many orders are going in, and of launches planned for next few weeks and months!
🏳️🌈😁🏳️🌈
There are two strands underlying why we thought a project like
@RainbowNHSBadge
was needed
1) LGBT+ people, including LGBT+ children and young people, still face significant challenges, and poorer healthcare outcomes, just for being themselves
@PinkNews
UK law, and
@nhs
policy, is clear and established on how same-sex accommodation/single sex wards should be delivered for trans people
Like delivering age-appropriate inclusive education in schools, this is a basic human rights issue, not a debate
Wee badges worn by
@nhs
staff aren’t going to fix this.
It needs all of our voices, together, challenging and affirming the simple basic truth: LGBT+ rights are human rights
But symbols can be part of that solution.
They’re part of what I can do to try to make things better
We hope to be able to share with you very soon now plans for next phase of the project (COVID delayed!) and how we will continue to build and develop it
As my time so directly involved with the project starts to come to an end, I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved 💕🏳️🌈
